The Japanese Type 10 Main battle tank (10式戦車 Hitomaru-shiki sensha) is a 4th generation main battle tank of JSDF produced by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force. Compared with other currently-serving main battle tanks in the JGSDF, the Type 10 has been equipped with enhancements in its capability to respond to anti-tank warfare and other contingencies.
The TK-X (MBT-X) project aims to produce the new Type 10 main battle tank, to replace or complement the existing Type 74 and Type 90 main battle tanks that are currently in service with the Japan Ground Self Defense Force. Development began in the 1990s, and production was expected to start in 2010-2011. A prototype was revealed on February 13, 2008 at the Technology Research and Development Institute (TRDI) in Sagamihara. Heavy emphasis was placed on C4I capabilities as well as on performance, firepower, protection and mobility.
While the Type 10 Main Battle Tank uses the same size, caliber and type (120 mm smoothbore) gun as most other tanks fielded by NATO, unlike the Type 90 which used the same gun as other Western powers, the gun mounted on the Type 10 is completely new. It is indigenously developed by Japan Steel Works for the Type 10. Japan Steel Works (JSW) is the same company which for years now has been manufacturing the Rheinmetall L44 120 mm smoothbore gun under licence for the Type 90 MBT. There is an option for longer barrels of 50 and 55 calibers (L50, L55).
Hope you enjoy!

On the claims about the special steel used, they're not bullsh!tting. I was part of a team which procured several thousand tonnes of high grade pipe from Nippon Steel in Kimitsu, and the grade was unique to that steelworks, no comparison with conventional API grades I am familiar with. When I viewed the tensile and charpy test results, the numbers were so far above what was required it was ridiculous. The special (secret) smelting and tempering process was specifically focussed on the micro crystal structure, and that's all I could get out of them. The material certs were themselves "vague" as to what was going on metallurgically also. This was very advanced sh!t.

The steel used is grain structure hardened via grain boundary strengthening. This means it has very small crystal structure resulting in high hardness while at the same time maintaining or even increasing strength (which isnt possible with any other hardening process)
@iatsd
@iatsd 7 лет назад
axised001 the interesting part is how hard it is to make the stuff. there are a couple of methods, but none of them are easy. running current through the metal as you cool it *extremely* carefully is the "easiest", but doing that on large slabs of presumably somewhat shaped armour? hell, the US can't do that. it has to be a nightmare to produce with a high failure rate of the plates. the result though is fantastic for telling fin rounds to just fvck right off. no benefit against KE, but that's what the ceramic is for. I'd love see them making the plates.

Yes. It's a duplex structure, where very small crystals bond with larger ones, in an amorphous matrix to give high impact resistence, some reasonable ductility and very high tensile numbers. Weldability is also good, but tank armour is not "welded" using normal methods for obvious reasons.

The Government knew the limitation of train size, Bridge weight capacity, in the US plus the calculations on how many medium tanks can fit on a cargo vessel as opposed to if it's carrying heavier tanks. The Sherman was well planned and designed to meet the need of the US army in it's battle fighting TWO wars beyond the Atlantic and the Pacific. Super impressive tank, typical Japanese product. I've been to Japan several times, and can tell you the terrain is TERRIBLE for tanks. Like you said, mountains, dense forrests and lots and lots of rivers and lakes. In many forested areas of the world you have an interesting phenomena (from a Tanker's perspective) , in that if the trees are densly packed, they're usually small emough to be pushed over and flattened. If the trees are too big, then they're widely enough spaced to allow you through between them. The myth that tanks can't move through forrests allowed the Germans to gain surprise through the Ardennes twice in WW2. But in Japan, whole different ball game, the bloody bamboo forrests and other types are so densly packed you'd not get any kind of anything through them. A D9 bulldozer might do it.

this would be perfect for central and south Italy as well. the C1 Ariete the contemporary Type 90, was built with weight saving in mind but ended up being too heavy anyway. This new medium tank would perfectly complement the new Centauro line being suitable for narrow mountain roads and bridges. Anyway I always thought the "Modern" MBT is getting too overweight for anything different then a large scale flat open tank battle and small size and mobility could easily become a plus for logistics and fast redeployment.

Wow! I've never before been so amazed watching a tank drive in reverse. Regarding the hydraulic suspension and its usefulness, the Swedish STRV style tanks make fantastic use of such a system by allowing them to engage from behind very steep terrain with minimal exposure to the enemy, and to an extent this is an effect that western MBT's in general try to achieve by having good gun depression and turret-centric armor schemes. Of course the terrain as you say will dictate whether or not it's worth it based on a particular military's needs, but it's nonetheless a highly desirable feature save for the added cost! Think of it as giving your tank twice or maybe 3x the gun depression it would normally have, crazy right!

Id disagree about suspension, ability to lower a tank for 30-40cm and lower its silhouette and whole tank as a target is of most importance for its survivability and detection! And adjusting gun elevation for more than 1 meter up and down then standard can really be handy on mountainous region and for trespassing difficult terrain that suspension will be god sent :)
@StigmADiabolicuM666
@StigmADiabolicuM666 7 лет назад
Most videos you might have seen tank shooting something isnt at full range! Tank wouldnt be standing in plane sight, it would have been hidden and covered with camonetting which is made to foul targeting equipment by reducing heat signature and lowering radar cross section and im sure they wouldnt put if flat down when it would need to shoot down...and when in need for ground clearance they would just bring it back up
@thisghy8126
@thisghy8126 7 лет назад
Adrian Wilson in a way your right. Especially with ground clearance because of ieds. But a low profile turret that has lots of gun depression is optimal. Ideally, in a good defensive position a tank should barely show itself with only the gun and sighting systems uncovered. This suspension system is a good idea for any modern tank
@stupidburp

@mississippirebel1409 5 лет назад
I'm sorry to tell you but as someone who spent 11 yrs in the US army (2000-2011) with 2 tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, the overwhelming majority of countries don't need tanks with this kind of suspension system. First off it is two expensive and would end up meaning a lot more maintaince and is another thing that can break. Also the benefits of it is at best minimum! With the optics and sensors on other tanks and aircraft, having a low profile tank means NOTHING. I'm sorry but just because you lowered your tank a foot isn't going to make it any harder to see or hit. What makes a tank good is its fire control system, armor and speed. A tank has to be able to spot its enemy, be able to hit/destroy it, be able to take hits and lastly be able to quickly relocate from one position to the next. Everything else is bonus.

Original doctrine is derived from Japanese geophysical environment. Transportability, ambushing and find first & kill first. Data fusion is key capability. Taking an account of the background that basic technologies such as stabilizing of mechanics, fire control got matured it is not surprising this system was realized at this occasion. Looks extrapolation of Leclerc technology (Enhanced C3I (inter-human fusion) -> M2M level fusion), but requirements by Japanese army are a little bit different from those by French army.

Is the suspension active in the sense that when the vehicle is on the move it reads the terrain ahead and actuators move the road wheels to create an ultra-smooth ride? If so would it therefore augment stabilisation of the main gun?

Approximate effective armor thicknesses are often given for modern main battle tanks, but are there any sources that tell the actual thickness of the armor (for that matter, do you happen to know)? Or would givng away true values like that, even without material composition, reveal too much and thus is kept classified?

That is not how slat armor works, it does not activates the HEAT round prematurely. It lets the fuse in front of it pass by while cutting/deforming the wider warhead, so when the fuse finally hits the armor the warhead itself is either disabled or a lot less effective.

Again, another enjoyable and informative video. Wrt to lacking space for Tank-warfare training: Has Japan looked into copying what the UK did for its armoured warfare training requirements (i.e. BATUS) and leased/rented space from friendly countries?

No , cause japan are not like singapore that need to rent other country cause it tiny country lol , the type 90 only operate in the northern island , type 10 will operate on main island and the southern island = it can operate every part of japan ( that why it light ) and japan do have few open space , only around tokyo and osaka it lack space

Type 10's armor is confirmed resistant to Type 10 AP at 250m: This document outlines the testing method used for measuring ballistic resistance, it outlines the methodology used for measuring striking velocity of 120mm shells. Basically for 25mm - 120mm ballistics tests, the firing rig is placed 200m away, the measuring equipment is set up 20m (likely medium calibers) to 40m (used for high calibers) away from the target. www.mod.go.jp/atla/nds/Z/Z0012B.pdf So in the case of the Type 10, the target and firing rig were 200m apart and the propellant was reduced to simulate an extra 50m. So 100% confirmed it's resistant to Type 10 APFSDS at 250m.

This would be perfect for Italian environment: we couldn't buy the Leopard 2 because of it's weight prevented on mountain infrastructures and created problems for transport in the islands and we ended up with indigenous design, which unfortunately bloated in weight almost up to the levels of the other MBT. Tank like this built with advanced composites could bring the weight back under control and allow use for bridges, narrow urban streets, rail and mountain roads.

Excellent video as always. Just to add on with the info about the tank the Japanese are reducing the number of MBT in the country in favor of a more rapid deployment strategy (considering they're more concerned about Chinese activities near the southern islands than Russian activities up north). Which is why they're fazing out the type 74 and but not replacing the type 90. Instead they're favoring buying the maneuver combat vehicle (while possibly reducing the procurement of the type 10) to achieve their rapid response.

I remember Japanese saying that the side skirt was a full on armor that can protect the track from attacks. Turned out it was just a thin metal sheet. But this tank fits for Japan's need and for Japan that's the most important bit.

All metals form crystals as they cool. If you look at some chain link fences you can see crystals on the poles quite easily, big blobs of differing color. These large crystals are a material defect, then smaller the crystals are the stronger the material will be, nanocrystals probably means the largest crystals in any given sample are on the order of nanometers, which is quite small.

its an incredible tank to be sure. but expense is probably going to be her main weakness and limit her numbers. though the added mobility will likely negate the issue of numbers as it can "hit and run" better than most tanks to keep themselves safe. I don't think it will fully replace the type 74 however due to the numbers issue. I think some local defense forces will keep them but perhaps reduce the numbers active to around 350 and compliment with around 150 of the type 10.

The nano-crystal steel is a sort of "foam" or little cage structure made of composites and the "void" is filled with steel... Some nano-crystals are known to be 100% stonger than RHS for 100% lighter ! There are metal-metal crystals and composite metal crystals, but your get the idea ! A sort of structural nanometric "foam" filled with another steel of composite

Had the Germans just go straight to the Panther rather than wasting on Tigers, the Brits would've make a lot of the Centurions for D-Day and T-44 would be built in tens of thousands. Who knows if the Germans manage to deploy the E series before 1945.

According to various documents and descriptions in a Google Search "nanocrystalline" steel is a very highly purified steel alloy that has been hardened and tempered to extremely high hardness all the way through (circa-600+ Brinell Hardness Number or Rockwell "C" Hardness Scale upper-60s). Thus, it is extremely brittle, but, if merely put under a more gradual force, extremely resistant to bending or denting. So you would use it as a form of reinforcement in a laminated armor structure, only being used on the outer face if the projectiles expected are capable of being shattered by such impacts, spreading their force over a wider area and thus lowering their penetration ability. If this is not so (HEAT rounds, for example), then you keep the hard steel layers well inside the armor with ceramics and such in front of and behind the steel so that the steel can use its extreme strength to hold the armor together and the other layers do the actual resisting of the armor to the impacting weapon. This is the modern version of the arguments for when to use face-hardened versus homogeneous, ductile armors in warship protection of battleships in the late-19th and first half of the 20th Centuries.

How in the hell did I miss this one..?!? I have been living in Japan since 1998, and indeed there are very few places where the terrain would permit a sizeable tank force to operate. The terrain is much more conducive for smaller sized units to fight a defensive war of attrition from ambush positions against an invading force, since Japan has very few places that would allow for a Battle of Kursk/Desert Storm type of massive tank battle. I couldn't/can't stand watching you and SBCav have all the fun, so I armed my Visa, flipped off the safety, and pulled the trigger on ordering SB 4.0!! I should be getting my dingle...dangle..ding-a-ling...whatever the damn thing is called, in the mail this week. The wait is killing me...!

I am not sure if it isn't an advantage when your tank could squat by just 40 cm, still it would make 40cm less visible target height from the very front, so like about 2 square meter area less from the very front to target at. To get that even without any digging does not sound too bad after all, does it?

I very much like this tank; I think that it's the most attractive looking tank I've ever seen in a very long time. I'm also glad that Japan has opted for an auto loader in a manned turret as opposed to thr unmanned turret path chosen by the Armata. It's nice to know that the Mk - 1 Eyeball system will still be available when the sensors glitch or go down. The only major drawback I can see is, because of it's smaller size, there will be less 10 mm ammo stored aboard, whether it be SABOT and/or HE. As for it's cost and limited availability' I think that has more to do with the fact that Japan spends a very small percentage of it's GDP on the military as compared with countries like Russia, America, China, or een South Korea. Degree of supply or rarity will always affect the final cost.
