My prediction is that 'These our bodies possessed by light' will win the prize from what I have heard about the book. (The only book that I have read is Moustache and absolutely loved it. It is a tough book to read even in Malayalam because of the heavy dialect and the non-linear narration. So I perfectly understand why the book didn't work for you guys. It is a book that demands the readers' time and patience.)

Hello, My prediction would be Djinn Patrol on the purple line. From the discussion here, I learn that this is a very readable book. I always loved books with children's perspective. They offer you a vision we either have long forgotten or just never realise that certain situation can be seen in that way. If JCB wants to make a statement by choosing a book, then it should be an extremely readable and full developed book like this. From what I hear, this book has the best character development and plot. I agree with Anuya that books should be accessible to readers, should be readable rather than just for literary merit and make it unreadable by either following a very complex narrative or simply to test you if you can get through. I've battled with such books. So, I'm also choosing Djinn because it appears to be an important book that draws on real incidents. Such voices should be heard and such books should win! Thanks. 😀

Hello. My prediction is Moustache. It checks most of the boxes for a winner. A translation, Dalit literature, and pushing the boundaries of how a story can be told. I know it's a risky choice but, I'm strong since the author is a local sensation winning state literary prizes left and right. Reminds me of JCB's push to Benyamin. It's time to up the game I guess, to reward such complex narratives and magical realism with a prize. P.S. My name is also Harish. That's one more reason I back up this author. 😄

Wow! Ok, so my prediction is 'Prelude to a Riot' by Annie Zaidi. Going by the current fractious state of the country, and going by the short history of JCB winners being political; 'Jasmine days', talking about the Behrain uprising, and 'The Far field' about ever unsettling Kashmir. So, it is only a safe bet to go with this choice. Plus, it is a small book and going by the discussion you guys had about how realistic it was, so I believe it is what fiction as a broader division can achieve, to explore avenues that non-fiction cannot, without a flinch. Like an escape into a world where true liberty lies and is accepted, is in fiction. And also, I've been following JCB longlist and shortlist announcements this year. Going by the criteria they mentioned in their discussion, and what did they look for in selecting these books, this book fits the best reflected in your comments on it. Another strong contender could be 'Djinn Patrol', having a unique child voice. Child psychology is the catch now. The recent 2020 international booker prize was also won by this wildly original novel - The Discomfort of Evening, narrated from a 10 year old perspective. Even The God of small things, Atonement, The horse walks into a bar, and many celebrated novels have a child voice. But, I don't see JCB making these leaps yet, and catching up to the world trend. But, I would be happy if they did. So, anyways, my prediction is 'Prelude to a riot'. And I abide by it. So excited for the book set and IG live if it happens. 😄 Fingers crossed! 🤞

I think none of you understood what moustache stood for, would have appreciated if you had tried reading the book before being so negative about it. Sad

Definitely my money is on Dharini Bhaskar's most exquisitely told book, "These, Our Bodies, Possessed by Light", and if for whatever reason it doesn't win, then it better lose to Moustache than to any other book on the shortlist. That's the long and short of it.

Thank you for introducing us to another 10 gems of Indian literature this year! Sadly, I haven't been able to read any of these books, but I can't wait to read Undertow, Djinn Patrol, A Burning, Prelude To A Riot, and A Ballad of Remittent Fever. I feel like Moustache is a strong contender because it's a translation, it's dalit literature, and it's inaccessible - a typical choice for prestigious awards. However, if I were the judge, I'd declare Annie Zaidi's Prelude to a Riot as the winner, specially because it could not have been more relevant in today's climate.

Also, I have deleted most of my social media handles but you should do one such video with fans, be it for Booker, Pulitzer, JCB, Women's Prize...it would be such an honor to read all of the books AND discuss them with you on your channel 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Hi! My prediction is Chosen Spirits. Very unusual but much needed book for the times. I always liked dystopian.. so, I pick this. Also heard that this book is not exactly dystopian, like in a sense doesn't have a bleak future, but it rather challenges dystopian itseems. Excited about it. Hope it wins and hope I get to win the give away too. Hahah.. thanks.

My prediction is "These, our bodies, possessed by light." It reminds me of Booker prize winner 'Girl, Woman, Other.' Talk about the ultimate dark horse in this race. I don't know if my prediction goes correct or not, Voila woman power! Let's go! 💃🏽

I really hope that Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line by Deepa Anappara wins because hell yeah! crime fiction authors and readers need to be taken seriously especially when the book is well written. So my bet is on this book.
