After the tragic events of Order 66 and the Great Jedi Purge, many Jedi who managed to escape the betrayal of their Clone Troopers were forced to go deep into hiding, in remote locations and backwater planets around the galaxy, to avoid the brutal grasp of Darth Vader. One young Iktochi Padawan, named Ferren Bar, was able to escape the purge by travelling to the bottom of Mon Cala’s oceans, and forming a small resistance movement with other surviving Jedi. Once down there, Ferren Barr showed his fellow survivors hacked footage of Order 66 and Anakin’s slaughter.

So, the story begins high above the vast oceans of Mon Cala, at the battle of Dac City. Darth Vader and his force of ruthless inquisitors have invaded the planet, and are attempting to make their way to the King, Lee Char in the centre of the city. The local quarren and Mon Calamari citizens fight valiantly to protect their homeworld from the onslaught of the Empire, but Vader’s forces are simply too strong.
Vader begins moving forward, with his inquisitors following right behind, confidently telling them that they will be proceeding forward. Vader’s dark inquisitors however, are slightly confused by this, with the Ninth sister, who you might remember from Jedi: Fallen Order, asking “You have any sense of where we should be headed?”. Vader replies simply, telling the rest that they will be travelling upwards and moving straight into the royal palace, where King Lee Char is located. You’ll also remember Lee Char from the Clone Wars TV series.
The Ninth sister then asks Vader why they are travelling to the centre of the royal palace, The Jedi survivors would not dumb enough to hide right near the king. Vader tells her that he is not expecting to find the Jedi right away, but that he wants to speak to the King personally.
The tenth brother then chimes in, questioning how Vader can possibly now that the king is still up there, before adding “he probably evacuated the minute the empire landed an entire battalion on this rock”.
But of course, Vader can sense that King Lee Char remains on the planet, as he is very familiar with him from his days as Anakin Skywalker. This then rocks Vader into a traumatic flashback, all the way back to the Clone Wars, where Anakin, Ahsoka, Jar Jar, Kit Fisto and Padme were present at the coronation of Lee Char. Vader remembers his time with Lee Char, and that he was a determined, strong and unique individual, so there is absolutely no way that he will abandon his city.
As this is happening, Lee Char is at his war room in a hidden location, where he demands a status update from his main military strategist, Ackbar. Ackbar tells Lee char that their Mon Cala defence forces are doing a fantastic job at repelling the empire… for now… but they are simply landing too many forces to hold off forever. Lee Char accepts this, because their defence force only needs to hold the imperial forces back for long enough to complete an evacuation. Lee Char’s plan is to abandon all of Mon Cala’s above water cities, and evacuate all citizens below water, allowing the empire to take control of everything above water. This strategy absolutely outrages Raddus, who angrily says “I can’t believe it. Above the surface of below-- this is OUR PLANET. You’ll also remember Raddus from Rogue one as one of the brave Rebels who fought at the battle of Scarif.
Following this, the Imperial Star Destroyer Sovereign is in orbit above the atmosphere of Mon Cala, where Tarkin himself takes a transmission from Lee Char. Lee char demands that Tarkin pull his forces away from Mon Cala, as it violates a peace treaty that the Empire had signed with them previously. Lee char calls the ridiculous attack unwarranted, but Tarkin sharply responds to the Mon Calamari King telling that the invasion is very necessary, because an imperial diplomat was assassinated while under the protection of the Mon Cala Government.
