With my wife Dace we went through this side of the map again to share it with you. We hope you will join us in finding without searching, which is our way of approaching these geographies.
We are in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Everyone who comes to this city soon realizes why Sarajevo is considered the “Jerusalem of Europe”.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country. The population is mostly Muslim Bosnia, Orthodox Serb and Catholic Croat, although there are also Jewish communities and other religious minorities. But the doubling is not homogeneous, depending on which city we are in, the panorama can change a lot.
For centuries, Bosnia and Herzegovina has been a meeting place for different cultures and religions. Religion has been a source of identity and an important part of daily life for many people in the country.
However, after the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992-1995), religion has also been used to divide the population and justify ethnic violence.
That is why there have been strong internal displacements since then and, in the case of Sarajevo, the Serbs are the ones who have left.
In 1991, Muslim Bosnians formed 45% of the population, followed by Orthodox Serbs at 38% and Catholic Croats at 7%. Currently, more than 80% of Sarajevo is Muslim
Sarajevo is located in a basin surrounded by mountains and is known for its rich cultural and historical heritage.
The city has a mix of architectural styles, including Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and modern buildings.
The old town, known as Baščaršija, is one of the main tourist attractions in the city, with its narrow streets lined with shops and restaurants selling traditional Bosnian food.
Bosnia is a fairly young country that is in the process of reconstruction, so Sarajevo, as the country's main city, has the advantage of centralizing all efforts in this regard.
Many expatriates are living and working in the city, hired by companies and institutions engaged in reconstruction and development efforts.
Living in this city is incredibly cheap, and you will notice this from the moment you settle in.
In this line, rental prices are 54% cheaper than in Madrid. At the current exchange rate, a one-bedroom apartment in the city center costs less than 250 euros per month.
In the case of food, here you spend an average of 31% less than in the Spanish capital. The trend continues in other aspects such as transportation, personal care and entertainment.
But the interesting thing about the city is not its economy, but that it manages to transport us to other latitudes that we judge to be more distant. Although Sarajevo is known for its ethnic and religious diversity, today the population is mainly made up of Bosnian Muslims, something that we have been able to verify walking through its streets.
