I just saw this cast’s performance at the Hippodrome, and let me tell you: this cast knows what it’s doing. Not only were they SPOT ON vocally across the board, but the passion and power and raw emotion that emanated from the stage resonated through the entire theatre. Consistent gooseflesh made itself known as this cast delivered one of the most memorable performances I’ve ever had the pleasure of attending. A brilliant, astounding, moving interpretation, and the Jesus and Judas were both SO, SO phenomenal. Visually striking, artistically refreshing, and musically spellbinding.

Just saw it 4 times in Rochester - the energy on stage was unbelievable, all voices were strong, orchestra was amazing, the Gethsemane and crucifixion numbers were so filled with passion and raw emotion it was felt up to the balcony and back. Aaron's voice was touching and beautiful and soul-stirring.

The choreography on this show is my absolute favorite I think I’ve ever seen, using the modern and the role of the mob leader to depict how little control Jesus had on other’s perception on/obsession with him and how quickly it could spread and mutate was absolute genius. The use of modern dance totally supports that, and ,it was overall a absolutely genius work of choreography.

After reading some of the comments here - the negative ones about movement/hipster/etc., I just had to write something: I like the fact that JCS can be interpreted in so many ways. I grew up with the 1973 movie; that was my first. My parents also had the double-vinyl set...and now i am lucky to have a vinyl of my own, complete with the liner notes/lyrics, a wonderful sounding lucky find at a used book store for only $1.99. So when I first heard differing versions, I did cringe at first. At that time I did not fully understand and appreciate that musicals can be performed differently...but then I started paying attention to the actual work that goes into a show...the choreography, the singing, the overall “look” of the show. Not everyone is going to like the same things, but I am glad there are people and performers brave enough to try that different style, to sing that song or move together differently. I just had the thought of a buffet table, loaded with many different foods. We’re certainly not going to eat them all, and that’s okay. We may not like the way the food looks, or we may remember a nasty experience with a certain food, so we avoid it. Switch food with musicals...and there you go. That being said, my personal JCS favorites are: 1.) The 1973 movie 2.) The 20th Anniversary Tour I saw in late ‘93, which I was so fortunate to witness Ted Neeley and the late Carl Anderson reprising their roles from the ‘73 movie 3.) The recent television version with John Legend - and before you possibly laugh, I did not think Legend was completely perfect for the role, yet I could see him throwing his heart into it.

@@DottyGale8 telling others not to waste their money assumes that we should all be the same. Thankfully, the world of art is a world of "the many." This show, this version, the performers, design, and raw talent --- amazing. Surprise! I am a "boomer." My best friend spend $11 dollars and gave me the 2-part album for Christmas when it came out. The music is as edgy now as it was then. This performance was fabulious, and "IMHO," everyone should be able to see it. @feliciaariza27

I agree with you... I mean I feel like they just changed the vocal demands to accommodate the style of singing which is sad because it loses the grit that it originally had. Like they can at least attempt to sing in a more rock style in a healthy way. For me with this show the character that makes or breaks the show is Judas; his Heaven On Their Minds is a little too clean for my taste but it’s not bad, not a fan of the choreography behind him not that it’s bad it just feels like it was added and it’s not really needed. Now it’s not in this clip but the trailer does have Superstar and I actually liked it.

@@feliciaariza27 Completely correct. While a show like this is certainly subjective, I feel like JCS suffers from the same thing that various Shakespeare productions suffer from- directors who think they're being innovative but end up dating and limiting a show that simply retains it's power by the score. This does look misguided and will continue to make a public with only a passing familiarity with JCS continue to snicker at it. If it were presented straight and didn't have man buns and corny metaphors- and again, this is only my personal opinion and I'm glad with those who really liked it- I just think it'd be significantly more powerful and dramatic. You can't fake rock singing unfortunately and we live in an era of singers being technically sound with vocal acrobatics but can't sing the blues... not an epidemic soon to change, I'm afraid.
@feliciaariza27

why is it ok to have a black jessus for the live performance, and yet for a staging we cant get one, it goes back to being white>? yet Hercules gets a black actor and no one says boo, and yet a perfectly beautiful and talented female artist at age 19 gets cast as areal and every one wants to attack her and the project. It's so rediculous.

@@TwinkBuster You can't deny that there is a default look for this show and it's white Jesus, Black Judas, brunette Mary. Mary probably gets the most diversity, but there is an aesthetic that is most often followed.
@TwinkBuster
@TwinkBuster 5 лет назад
@@inlovewithJLT You're incorrect here. The only production where that is true is this one right here. 1973 film: White Jesus Black Judas, but an Asian Mary. The 2018 live version: Black Jesus, Black Judas, white Mary 1970 Concept Album: White Jesus, White Judas, Asian Mary 1996 West End: White Jesus, British-Indian Judas, Filipino Mary 2012 Arena Tour: British-Indian Jesus, White Judas, White Mary I'm not saying that there doesn't need to be more diversity, but I don't think it's as deliberate as you make it out to be.
@inlovewithJLT
@inlovewithJLT 5 лет назад
@@TwinkBuster All of those Marys are brunette so I don't know why you bring them up as if I were wrong on that point. The concept album wasn't a production so there's no reason to bring it up when talking about visuals. The original Broadway production followed the same visuals I listed as has every production in which Carl Anderson and Ted Neely reprised their roles (which have been many) and countless productions looking to emulate the most recognized visuals of the show. In the history of the show the NBC and UK Arena productions are practically newborns. I'm aware that they did a nice job updating the optics but they are too recent to pretend that they represent the overwhelming tide of the show's ~50 year history.
@TwinkBuster
@TwinkBuster 5 лет назад
@@inlovewithJLT The Concept album was literally the first recording of it. Whether it was staged or not it was pivotal. Also, in terms of Mary being a brunette. Why does that matter? Shouldn't the diversity in heritage or skin color of the character matter far more than the color of her hair? Out of the 13 most notable productions of this musical, only 3 of them have followed the "White Jesus, Black Judas" formula you claim is rampant; the original cast, the film, and this new touring cast. If you really want to talk about a pattern then look at the amount of times it's been White Jesus, white Judas. Those I find far less diversity than the ones you cite.
