The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle or JLTV is a US military specifically the US Army, US Marine Corps, and US Special Operations Command program to partially replace the Humvee with a family of more survivable vehicles with larger payload. The development of JLTV is initiated by the Army and the Marine Corps as a successor to the High Mobility Multi-Wheeled Vehicle which has been in service since 1985. JLTV construction started in October 2008, where three industry teams received awards for the joint light tactical vehicle technology development phase. The Army released a request for proposal for the JLTV's Engineering Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase in January 2012 which then awarded the EMD contracts to AM General, Lockheed Martin Corporation, and Oshkosh Corporation in August 2012.
