This is the opening scene in The Jolson Story (1946) where young Al Jolson (born Asa Yoelson), played by Scotty Beckert and his neighbor Ann Murray played by Ann B. Todd, are at a Burlesque House called 'Kennans' where Steve Martin played by William Demarest is performing. Asa is prompted to stand up and sing. (The actual singing was done by Rudy Wissler). Realizing he was supposed to be singing with his father who is a cantor at the local synagogue, Asa runs out of Kennan's and into the synagogue where his father, played by Ludwig Donath is singing a Hebrew hymn called 'Ahavas Olom' and gives his son a stern look when seeing him. The singing of actor Ludwig Donath was actually performed by Cantor Saul Silverman who also sang in "The Jazz Singer" (1927) for Warner Oland. Larry Parks and William Demarest were nominated for Academy Awards but lost.
