Pio Pi then constructed a retraction letter by the orders of the Archbishop and hand it to Balaguer when he went to the Archbishop before proceeding to the fort and meet Rizal.

Just like with Rafael Palma, he did not believe the retraction. He questioned the real intention of Balaguer who Coates thinks that he only wanted to gain popularity and attention. He also doubted if the marriage to Josephine really took place and how much the retraction would damage Rizal's reputation. He also think that the retraction did not happen because Rizal was denied Catholic burial which was supposed to happen if he retracted. Coates also suggest that ifcthe retraction really took place, Teodora Alonzo should have been informed by Rizal before he was killed.
