I like your theory about animal souls. Maybe we can expand on it a bit. What if each animatronic represents animals killed under different circumstances? What if their personalities mirror those of their killers? Let's start with Hangry. He is a pig. Pigs are farm animals that are only valued for their meat. Farmers kill them as soon as they get big enough. That is reflected in Hangry's behaviour. He only sees mortals as food and nothing else. Next is Penny, who is a chicken. Chickens are valued not just for meat but also their eggs. They get to live for longer and recieve some love. In the end we still kill them. Penny seems to represent that. She has a soft spot for both her companions and mortals. She, however, still mercilessly kills those who dare to cross her path. And then there is Lucky. Back in the day rabbits were hunted for both their meat and their fur. Nowadays some rich bastard can wack any animal just for the trophy or the fun of it. That seems to fit Lucky pretty well. He is a sadistic calculating hunter who toys with his victims.
that honestly makes sense. what I'm wondering tho is why is it part of the game? I was hoping the joy joy gang might represent one of the themes or the 9 circles of hell. I assumed it was gonna be treachery since the joy joy gang appeared to be friendly but turned out to be evil. but since E's notes doesnt really describe much of their souls except that they're "not human" I guess it explains why it wouldnt fit with the treachery theme bc animals dont really betray anyone
This is a good theory, but all of the monsters are based off of sequences of events in Doug Housers life. There are cutscenes in the game that fact checks this.
@@trevonduncombe5866 All of these monsters can have multiple meanings. They already have at least two. These realms were originaly connected to Bierce and then adapted Doug.
So, seems like all of them souls of animals who were killed for their meat. I theorized that the Joy Joy Gang represents Gluttony, and this would back that up.
Anyone notice that during Lucky's second animation his nose does a sniff sniff like an actual rabbit? when he says "You know why they call me Lucky?" the little break is where his nose twitches
I actually like the personality the Joy Joy Gang has. If you pay close attention during the level, they converse with each other when not chasing you(mostly Lucky berating the others for letting Doug escape). Oddly enough, they feel the most human out of the monsters so far, because they each have their own individual personalities
Basically by looks, Agatha, gold watchers and reaper nurses looked the most human but personally if it's about personality, the Joy joy gang and Agatha I guess
Actually If it wasn't for that Blue Spirit and Malak underestimating Doug AGAIN, Mama Bear and her babies would've easily killed Doug. It wasn't smart for Malak to leave his ring pieces he worked so hard to get back at her place. He should've taken them with him. Then he wouldn't be complaining about Doug using his powers.
I kinda like how Lucky isn’t “all talk, no action”. The Joy Joy Gang actually won against Doug and prevented him from getting to the portal. The first monsters to ever do so. Even his line in the beginning says so “You know why they call me Lucky? Cause I never lose!” That also explains why Lucky is extremely egotistical cause never once has he lost (this chapter kinda proves that) Gosh Dark Deception is so rad 💚
@@Cloudymelann Lucky: [Red eyed] “ THAT B🐕TCH DOESN’T COUNT-“ Me: [In a Lamb costume] “ We don’t talk about E- E, E, E.” Lucky: “ AND WE DON’T SING THAT SONG!!!” [Begins punching me to death]
I never really thought about it before, but it actually makes sense for the Joy Joy Gang to be the souls of animals that were killed by people. When you think about it, rabbits, chickens, and pigs are all hunted and killed either for sport or for food. That's essentially what Lucky, Penny, and Hangry we're doing to Doug the whole time during Mascot Mayhem. Can't wait to see your video about Mama Bear when it comes out! She was definitely one of my favorite monsters from the latest Dark Deception chapter.
I think the rabbit hates us humans the most because of all the animal testing done on them. Killing animals is a quick, less painful death but the animals used for animal testing of cosmetic products have to face a very slow, extremely painful death.
@@ipsharoy7398 That would explain about why Lucky seems to be the angriest member out of the entire Joy Joy Gang. He hates humans with a burning passion. That would also explain why his kill animation is longer than the other monsters in the game: he wants to inflict as much pain on Doug as possible before dealing the killing blow.
@@dudeonbrave123 probably represents him practically being glued to his family - which is represented by him being surrounded by thousands of mannoquins
5:42 I've watched people play mascot mayhem about 20 times, yet I never realized that after he says "you know why they call me lucky?" He wiggles his nose like a true rabbit XD it's adorable to me
Animal souls? Possibly. They could also be an amalgamation of negative emotions formed into a functional soul then stuffed into these animatronics. Lucky=Arrogance. Penny=Vanity. Hangry=Gluttony.
@@owenmcbride1 still a possibility. I think Mike gave up on that theory to easily. While not necessarily a Dante-esqe inferno it is still a realm of damnation. Meaning the seven deadly sins should still be pretty prevalent.
Now that I think of it. In Crazy Carnevil stage, Bierce mentioned about Doug having a fear of clown. Maybe this is why he hate going to a theme park type place and now that he enter this dark realm, his soul actually drawn to this kind of nightmare realm that have theme park or the animal/mascot type monster in his nightmare most of the time.
Man.. Doug has beaten so many horrible demons, to saw blade monkeys, angry spirits, and axes wielding statues Only to lose to a Chicken, Bunny and Pig-
Going with the “they’re animals” thing I think I can pinpoint what kind of animals are given which costume! Pets are given penny as pets have a soft spot for humanity but were likely corrupted, Hangry is animals used for food thus he eats humans as a kind of twisted revenge, and lucky is likely wild animals having 0 interest in humans other than brutality like what we do to wildlife. Going off this it’d explain why penny seems to admire lucky (which was confirmed), because as a pet she’d look up to and admire someone who is her leader just as pets do the same for us! Though penny’s affection toward humans may be a mix of a pets natural affection towards humans and loving us as a sort of toy (like a dog loving a ball). Edit: Lucky or penny could likely include lab tested animals (likely penny as lab animals are normally pet animals, this could also give reason to her need to please..as if lab animals don’t please they get hurt or thrown away).
Not only is that true, but I'm pretty sure it's a reference to it's a small world but "mad" replaces "small". (There are other disney world references in the level like the castle, that represents Disney's most iconic part of the park, and the underground that could represent the catacombs the suits can walk through without a stampede of fans following them around all the time.)
I personally think these represent Gluttony, the clear indicator being Hangry but Lucky is also eternally hungry for chaos and carnage, and while violence is an available sin as well, the Monkeys fit it better and Lucky's love for killing seems insatiable compared to the cold calculation of the monkeys. Along with that, the Joy Joys army is continuously growing as we see from how many animatronics chase you down at the end of it. With that many copies of them, their hunger is limitless.
Wait, a yellow rabbit animatronic that lures you into a false sense of security before killing you? Something about this feels strangely familiar,. And I love it!
Joykill: You weren't thinking about leaving, we're ya. Lucky: That really hurt my FEELINGS. Penny: You can't just leave without saying goodbye. Hangry: Dinner Time. They are really serious, especially Lucky The Rabbit.
I really like how they did the joy joy land and gang. I always try to match them to the hell circles you talked about in other lore videos and I feel like this level was gluttony/violence. That’s because first of all the antagonists are animals. Also the whole theme park and mechanics, personality for these antagonists really suit this gluttony thing. Humans mistreat and kill animals for the sake of entertainment (zoos, amusement parks etc.) = location of the level, consume animals = hangry the pig is the equivalent to humans who eat animals and thirdly the fact that animals are used to experiment and test on, whether it’s for cosmetics, medicine or for genetic experiments like mutation = equivalent to the fact that the gang are robots and were combined at the end to one “animal”. Also the whole army of these animals is like how animals are breed in masses to be used for all of the above. So I feel like the gluttony of humans meets their perfect punishment with how they designed joy land and the joy gang bc all of what they stand for is gluttony or at least the very opposite of moderation
I just thought of something... Every previous level's monster's gave us a power. Murder monkey's gave us speed boost, Agatha teleportation, etc. If you remember in the mama bear chase... Malak called Doug lucky when the boulders fell to stop mama... So Doug got some of Lucky's... Well luck. Not as powerful since Doug didn't defeat the joy joy gang. But just enough to help him in a pinch
Actually if you played the game Murder monkey stage no powers Agatha Speed boost Gold Watchers teleportation Ducks Telepathy Clowns Primal Fear Reaper nurses Telekinesis Joy Joy Gang Vanish Mama Bear is the only one without a power unlock
@@BendySlayerX I'm pretty sure what he means is that the powers Doug got were similar in use to creatures he evaded prior to getting said power and as such makes sense as to why the creatures act the way they do. The Monkeys got eraged and rush doug after he collects the shards which is speed boost, Agatha had the teleport ability, Gold Watchers always knew where you were and when you were watching them for Telepathy, Ducks were the first intro to Stunning meaning Primal Fear, Clowns are a bit more vague but they are the only ones that invite you in and surround you with sheer numbers which I guess represents Telekinesis, and finally the cloaking from the Nurses making invisibility. Joy Joy Gang doesn't technically have a power unlock either as the power unlock comes from the piece of ring obtained from the hospital.
@@TheWonTrueDragon I did hear a rumor (don’t ask where) that when entering the Mannequin portal once part 1 is complete, we have an obstacle in the hall way. As we didn’t get a new ring piece in Bearly Buried, it could mean we might get a new power from the Mascot Mayhem ring piece. I believe the power is either strength or cloning. Strength as in Hangry’s power because Lucky has speed boost which we already have and Penny can stun us which we can already do. And cloning because the Joy Joys have a lot of clones, so Doug could spawn copies of himself to distract the mannequins while he “Run for his life” although that might a bit too op
"Man I'm glad Doug lost his plot armor. I wonder how he'll do without it." "Nvm he got it back immediately." Malak claims to have important work and can't chase after Doug, but he has plenty of time to watch Doug run around.
I mean, plot armour is something all protagonists tend to have, not to mention horror protagonists because have you even SEEN games like Bendy and the Ink Machine? (Seriously think about it, now THAT’S a game that relies on plot armour to a crazy degree.) As for Malak, yeah can’t really argue with that.
working theory seems to be its tammy's soul. malak can see through dougs eyes, just because he's busy doing something else doesnt mean he cant be watching doug tv
The orb will play an important part later in chapter five according to Vincent. As for Malak, it’s bothering me sometimes too, but he’s actually been around for quite a long long time(millenniums) so he’s quite vain as well and according to Vincent, actually have some kind of business to take care off outside of dealing with Bierce and the mortals she send(Vincent already mentioned it in the last Q&A about how there actually gonna be a book about him soon.) Not to mention a hundreds if not thousands of soul that end up there in each level/realm already, proven that apart from a very few minority, the monsters have quite an insane kill streaks there and usually don’t let anyone escape from their realm. At that point, Malak probably thought that he could just let his minion toy with that one fly that actually causing more problems than normal now that Doug have no ring power. Not to mention, he did state that he will(and probably want) to enjoy watching Doug suffer.
That might be something related to the plots, who knows? I think Malak is just preparing joy joy kill project in the zone, talking to mama bear about Doug coming so she gotta give birth to more babies quick/hide ring piece, or even something related to chapter 5! Well, unless tue devs didn't think that far and I'm just imagining too much... Though I admit, the rock falling at bearly buried is ridiculous, there are logic in it showing many wooden planks are holding onto them, but still, kinda forced
Animatronic, check. Yellow rabbit, check. Purple bowtie, check. Egotistical, check. Makes other animatronics do his bidding, check. Afton, is that you?
Since this gang are the only ones that stopped Doug, I hope Malek takes that into consideration and has them show up in the remaining levels to help the monsters in there
I'm sure all the monsters will be back for the final rush to beat Malek, but seeing how the Joy Joy Gang actually beat Doug, why wouldn't Malek utilize the one group that worked, plus we've seen that the monsters can be in other realms as well so there's nothing stopping them
@@JeremyPeche I think there will be a choice at the end of the game, kinda like cuphead where the player has to choose between Malak and Beirce as we can see Beirce becoming darker and more powerful.
@@eleanorcooke7136 ether way Malek hasn't given the player much of a reason to choose him so a good ending would probably be Bierce or neither. But none of that goes with my point that we still have at least 2 world's where Malek will try and stop the player, and since we've not only seen that the monsters can appear in other words but the fact that the Joy Joy Gang is the only ones that stop Doug would indicate that a smart move for both Malek and the developers would be to have them appear to try and stop Doug in the last two worlds when the monsters of said worlds prove that they can't
@JeremyPeche what's the point of the JJG returning if they already caught Doug and won? They've done their part so there's really nothing else they can do
They're the only ones who stopped Doug Houser from escaping. I guess they're pretty lucky after all. I think the Joy Joy Gang represents gluttony or treachery.
I think maybe violence or anger. I guess the murder monkeys would have that too and it would require a bit of reshuffling but just Lucky's death animation shows it, just the continual punches also the bombs and Penny's eggs. Also Hangry bursting through walls is a very violent move.
I think its interesting how Hangry is so blinded by hunger that in his first stage, before we break his jaw off, he still tries to stuff you in his mouth even though it’s clear his mouth isn’t large enough, so all he really does is headbutt you

You have been warned.** Notice how dark deception enhanced hinted at the CH4 bosses' mechanics? Chef Monkeys = The Matron The Boss is some kind of chase sequence. (The Matron being put in a car chase and the Chef Monkeys just chasing you to the Ring piece.) Agatha = Joykill (Survive in a room for as long as you can until the door opens.) *(Bierce even says the same line and everything when the door opens, she says "It's open!" for Agatha's boss fight and even for joykill's boss fight aswell!)* Titan Watcher = Mega Mama *(I gave the mama bear boss a nickname and everything lol)* (Both having them trying to kill you during the escape sequence.) Same here! I think the story and the way the world tells the story is fascinating. Although I probably won’t play this game since it’s tough as nails and my sense (or lack thereof) of timing would definitely screw me over. But I’m content with learning about the story of the game.
@@lelescarlet7184 I used to hate dark deception, but I watch one video and now all I think about is this absolutely amazing game, and now I’ve downloaded it.
@@cactusman3397 I'm guessing it's because DD also relies on animatronics and somewhat cliché "kid friendly guy who turns out to be scary" monsters, and some scenes are a bit cringe with all the overly friendly behaviour of the monsters. But that's the only complaint I have with the game. Otherwise DD is a fantastic and unique game concept with an actual fun factor and challenge unlike most horror games these days which only rely on jumpscares and boring cameras with no focus on fun gameplay.
I don't know if it's just me, but Lucky reminds me of William Afton for some reason, besides the fact that Lucky largely resembles what Afton would've worn when he lured those Children in to kill them.
Actually joy joy gang was about to be in the game years ago because dark deception was in early access and fnaf came after so dont say vince copied fnaf
@@jimmy6839 Copy is a strong word, but if you don't see the obvious references, you're fooling yourself. It has many homages to FNaF. Right down to the children celebrating stock sounds in their initial song. They are literally animatronic children's entertainment animals. No way in hell you make something like that without knowing about, and being influenced by, FNaF. Period.
The “joy kill” comment in Doug’s memories, and the connection to “adults who could care less about the characters their spawn drag them to see”, are crucial to explaining this world. Popular horror franchise Five Nights at Freddy’s obviously inspired the unsettling nature of the Joy Joy Gang, from their appearances to the fact that a puppet master is controlling them, intent on devouring souls/bodies of adults. Malak is the master in this case, rather than a fellow lost soul in Circus Baby, William Afton or the Puppet. Animal souls in these creatures rather than humans’ souls… an interesting idea.
@@thatonecutiewiththegoodnov7862 I think it represents both, since abusive parents often turn out to have been abused themselves as children. A never ending cycle of fear, pain, and trying to outrun the past.
That does remind me of what the Phone Guy says on the fourth night in FNaF 2. The Toy animatronics get along perfectly with kids, and are even fiercely protective of their young visitors. However, with adults like the kids' parents and even the pizzeria staff, they're known for being excessively creepy and even outright hostile, and that's just during the day. It could just be a result of their facial recognition programming always searching for potential dangers to the children, but the parallel is still there.
@@GameJunkyard11 This stage was being made/created at least in 2021 January and FNAF 3 was made in 2015. Even if Lucky's model looks oddly similar to springbonnie that doesn't mean it's made before FNAF 3.
I'm not sure about the whole animals thing and Penny being in love with lucky. Just because Penny has one line saying "lucky, I found him" doesn't mean she loves him. And I think what E meant by "they aren't human souls" I think it chould mean that they are just demons possessing the animatronics. Especially lucky, because lucky is sadistic and full of himself.
Well, Vince has confirmed that penny admires lucky during a q&a livestream (I forgot which one). The animal souls however, I am not too sure about it, so hey, I won't disagree with your opinion on what joy joy gang are. Sorry for the long comment lol
@@FuchsiaRosa yeah, but at least we know that penny has some sort of feelings towards lucky. (Admiration or maybe love (I swear, lots of fan art are gonna be made from thus, I guarantee it)) But honestly, I don't really care. I mainly focus on the game mechanics and the game itself more than the story.
I still don't understand why Doug didn't use his primal fear ability in the end cutscene. He could have gotten away like he did in that cutscene in the torment therapy level.
@@SpairM Though the Reaper Nurses act in a reverse lust manor, despising how lustful men are, using their s3x appeal as a downright weapon/"deception"(Hehe.) method.
I'm not sold on the idea that they contain animal souls... do we have any evidence of Doug being abusive towards animals? Bierce given she sacrificed a child might well have done the same to an animal first, but I can't say I remember that. I rather thought E was implying that these characters contained demons souls as opposed to human
What if Bierce was the reason Tammy died? Like, if Bierce used her powers or had Malek set things up to get Tammy in danger. Tammy was just 12 when she died.
@@thatonecutiewiththegoodnov7862 no,she was already in the car when her mother was driving probably after school and at the same day,Doug switch her medical to sleep pills which cause both her and Tammy died to car accident. Doug before the car accident never cared about both of his wife and daughter because of his abused mother and childhood and when he realized it,it's too late and he wanted to redeem himself by using ritual like how Malak said during Doug backstory
From what Malek said during his confrontation with Bierce, each of the monsters are supposed to be her nightmares. They can also represent other souls nightmares but in different ways. For Doug the Joy Joy Gang could represent either what SuperHorrorBro mentioned about the joy being sucked out of his life by his wife and child or it could represent an unhappy childhood. With how his mother was I imagine she wouldn't even think of letting Doug have any joy during his childhood.
The joy joy gang are, without question, my favorite enemies so far. So much personality and humor. I’d certainly hug them if they weren’t in their twisted, corrupted form we see in the game.
Why are yellow and purple murderous rabbits so popular nowadays? Glitchtrap and Lucky are pure examples but also Mr. Hopp is a murderous rabbit. Also they all want to kinda steal souls from you or something similar to it.
I wanna put my theory out here lol I theorize that the Joy Joy Gang are different forms of crazy serial killer types, or mentally insane people. After all, if you think about it, the whole of Chapter 4 has to do with mentally unstable people in different ways. Doug's mom(Aka Mama Bear), Doug's wife(Aka the Reaper Nurses) and then the Joy Joy gang. I view Hangry is a cannibal, Lucky is a manipulator/psychopath and Penny is basically like a Yandere (a person who's obsessed with their lover and will kill for them, but in Penny's case, she just loves the squishing of flesh.) And if we wanna get technical for Doug's connection to these guys, I theorize that Doug was bullied back in highschool by someone like Lucky and had a girl obsessing over him like Penny. Hangry I'm not so sure on though. I hope you like my theory!
@@Wynn_The_Gamer Even if E says they aren't human, serial killers and criminally insane people could be marked as "inhuman" I just thought that's what E meant lmaoo (But I completely see your point! Thank you!)
From what I can see in the characters, they each represent the sins of violence (Lucky), gluttony (Hangry), and pride (Penny). My second thought is maybe they all represent the sin of treachery? That’s the only sin that’s left.
The joy joy gang might represent different types of gluttony. Lucky with his ego. Hangry with food, most common type And penny with her looks and doug. (Not to be confused with vanity/pride)
Idk who the voice actor is for the rabbit, but his voice feels so… perfect, u kno? I can almost listen to his voice all day. I will say most of the rest of the voice acting is awesome as well
Lucky is my favorite purely because of his personality and accent. It’s just so funny. (Also he straight up wombo combos you as one of his death animations)
I don't know if the people who made the Joy Joy Gang tried to do a reference to Five Nights at Freddy's because the Joy Joy Gang are animatronics and are at a abandoned amusement park and in F.N.a.F they are animatronics at a pizzeria who was closed. Hangry= Pork Patch Lucky= Glitch Trap Penny= Chica But I like your theories
1:59 I also just noticed that the members are all technically based on prey animals, all that are considered “edible” including to humans. Not that this would be important to the characters or anything, just a thought
I have a theory. What if the Joy Joy Gang monitored Doug’s progress in the previous nightmares. This explains why they were able to successfully capture him.
Ooor maybe Malak just told them before Doug entered the realm, that probably explains why Malak rarely speaks to him or tries to stop him from entering. But hey that's just a theory, a game theory
