Grey Matter delivers concrete technology to artisans that have been industry secrets for far too long! Cast incredible objects with ease in the comfort of your own home.
"We want to make more than sidewalks. We need a concrete mix that can make art." - Concrete Cat
Grey Matter was originally developed exclusively for Concrete Cat. It's a special mix designed to meet the rigours of fabricating sculpture, furniture, and architectural details. Concrete Cat lended their design expertise and with the support of the Canadian National Research Council we designed a mix that’s been perfected to make the most beautiful castings in the world!
Concrete Cat's Story-
"When Concrete Cat began experimenting 12 years ago the only mix available was for sidewalks; it was clumsy, crusty and slow! After years of hunting we discovered that the largest concrete company in the world had a proprietary mix that could solve our problems. Unfortunately their minimum order was 20X more than we used in a year coupled with unattainable annual licensing fee, they would not give us the time of day.
It took another year to find the reclusive concrete chemist who helped us make magic. With this new found sage on board we were able to appeal the the Canadian National Research Council to aid us in an 18 month research project to design a concrete mix from the ground up. We created a mix designed to make highly detailed art with no need for special equipment. To date Concrete Cat has used over 20 tonnes of Grey Matter, it’s the best concrete in the world and our work wouldn’t be the same without it!

Have you ever tried CHENG Food-Safe Concrete Countertop Sealer for planters? I am looking for a sealer that is sold in smaller batches and a bit more affordable. This seems to be recommended everywhere!
@CONCRETECONCRETE
@CONCRETECONCRETE 3 года назад
It's an acceptable sealant, I used it 11 years ago, nothing special about it. I just read through their description and application online and it's a standard water born acrylic based sealant. Any acrylic water born tile sealant will work, they're all very similar. A hardware store has stone sealants that will work for what you need.

Love this video! A question for making concrete dog bowls. Would it be safe to use a food-grade sealant for a bowl to be eaten out of, you used as a water bowl? I’m currently using Cheng sealant with a beeswax - not sure if this would be safe and trusted to drink or eat out of. Any recommendations or ideas? Thanks!

Hello,is the acrylic water based finishing giving a satin finish or is it mat or shinny? thanks!
@CONCRETECONCRETE
@CONCRETECONCRETE 5 лет назад
The sheen is something you will control depending of the type of acrylic sealant, most brands will have options for both. Matte is very difficult to do because the sheen is related to the acrylic solids in the sealant. Typically less shine also means less solids, so for some sealants the more sealant you add the shiny it gets!
@ftinhazwny
@ftinhazwny 3 года назад
If we didnt put the sealant, the pot will absorb the water right?
@CONCRETECONCRETE
@CONCRETECONCRETE 3 года назад
Yes, but even with most sealants you still absorb some amount of water. Ideally you do want some moisture transfer but you want to control the rate and quantity of moisture.

Hi! I’m creating concrete coasters - then painting an image ontop. From my understanding - I should seal first (with spray - since concrete is porous) then paint (acrylic paint)- then spray again and finally seal it again with wax? To ensure food grade safety.

Hi :) do you seal and then wax? and if you want something to be food safe do you only use wax and no sealer? Thanks for the video! it's super helpful!!
@CONCRETECONCRETE
@CONCRETECONCRETE 3 года назад
Check the food safety guidelines in your country. In Canada the reason concrete is not deemed food safe is that it is porous (it not because anything is leaching out of the concrete, fully cured concrete is almost completely inert). These pores are said to harbour bacteria. According to Canadian guidelines any sealant makes concrete food. Both wax and waterborne acrylics can make concrete foodsafe according to guidelines. Ideally I recommend a quick seal with a waterborn acrylic tile sealant. Once it sets hit ti with wax. Or you can wash the concrete and go straight wax.

thanks for the shoutout ! do you ever use any color enhancing liquids/sealers to make the colors pop more ? great video !
@CONCRETECONCRETE
@CONCRETECONCRETE 5 лет назад
Yes, a penetrating acrylic seal will pop colour a bit. Alternatively if you wan tot make everything really deep and rich you can put your concrete in the sun and get it warm and then keep applying wax polish, it will soak in layer by layer and make the whole thing dark. It's a really long process but you'll get rich saturated colours.

So it is best to use the sealer on the damp object, as opposed to when it is fully dry?
@CONCRETECONCRETE
@CONCRETECONCRETE 3 года назад
this very much depends on the type of sealant you're using, for water born acrylic sealant you want the object to be hydrated and not bone dry.
@fatih2313
@fatih2313 3 года назад
Hi :) i am confused by the water spraying in the beginning. So the main idea of sealing concrete is to protect it from water and other substances. But we are applying water to it intentionally. Is it not defeating the purpose (and damaging it) ?
@PsyCoCinematics
@PsyCoCinematics 3 года назад
From what I can tell, it's a mixture of cleaning off any dust, waking up/restoring the concrete as it was hot that day so it was too dry, and the blue bleeds so he was making sure to wash off the excess pigment and make it a more defined look. The sealer is water based so that would likely make the blue seep out and blur a bit. EDIT: The sealer itself prefers to not be on a super dry surface, so it's likely that more than the other stuff I mentioned.
@CONCRETECONCRETE
@CONCRETECONCRETE 2 года назад
You weren't paying attention. The sealant is waterbased. Making sure the concrete is wet ensures better sealant absorbtion and bonding. And we're not protecting against water, almost all sealants are semipermiable.

My concrete planter/dish seems soft when I de-mold after 24hrs… it’s been in roughly 65-85F so the bottom of planter (originally the top as it’s upside down in mold) is rough and chalky, but the opposite end is smooth and shiny but scratches soooo easily! Even after weeks! Would this sealant be my answer? I believe I’m using the proper water ratio and have even tested using less etc so I’m not really sure what else to tweak!
