My objective is to make sure that there's no need to be rich to get access to great gardening information. I wired my raised beds up in parallel and connected a naff lawnmower battery up to it. Didn't kill them just enough to turn around, it was my early morning amusement 😂 worked atreat

Great video, Steve. As ive already said, i can confirm that strulch works in all the ways you mentioned. I wouldnt be without t it. I think its worth adding that if you want to gather up and re use the strulch its important to follow your system of using a rake to tamp down the soil on the bed before planting and adding the strulch, otherwise id imagine itd make it hard not to gather up loose, uneven soil with it too. I imagine this also helps the strulch performance, due to a nice even layer, without and peaks and troughs in the soil base, making the strulch layer uneven. All the best - Alison.

Great information for a new grower, thank you. I've just purchased my first bags of strulch ready for next year 😊

Another excellent video Steve, thank you. After following your recommendation and using both halos and Strulch for the first time in the polytunnel this year, I could not be happier, with significantly reduced watering and noticeably fewer slugs, weeds and stressed plants as the beds have not dried out. Having cleared beds today and bagged up the used Strulch for next year, I am really impressed it remains in such good condition and volume - definitely a worthwhile investment.

Thanks for the info steve. Ive just bought 4 of the 1st tunnel mini polytunnels at a bargain price in a closing down sale for £40 each they are 10x 4 ft. So will be using your idea of tunnels, halos & strulch in 25. Your video’s always hold so much useful information.

Thank you for such an informative video. Great to learn about strulch and how it works. I had always thought it seemed expensive but after watching your video I can see it would be a worth while expense. I am definitely going to try some. Would it be ok to put it around young lettuce/spinach/carrot seedlings if they are not under cover? Thank you. Happy gardening 🙂
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 3 дня назад
Probably ok if you leave about an inch around each seedling until it’s established

Im also a fan of strultch but i have found it seemed to cause an increase in earwigs for some reason which unfortunately has been a problem for my poor dahlias.

Do you think soaking straw in iron sulphate would do the same?

I'm always trying not to add iron to the soil.
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 4 дня назад
why's that Luke? do you have very high levels of iron in the soil already, iron is an essential nutrient for plants, so it's only an issue if you have too much, in my case I garden on sand, so it's a non-issue : All the best - Steve

@@SteveRichards Thanks, yes I think I have high levels as people seemed to bury everything around here. Not sure how I would know if the levels were high or low though. I think we may be talking about different types of iron however. I hope they don't get their iron from the same place cornflakes do as I am pretty sure food is not meant to be magnetic. 👍
@SteveRichards

lol, well Iron is a very important nutrient, it's in all soils : All the best - Steve

I only found it good for weeds but not slugs
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 3 дня назад
What about water retention? Did you use it under cover, where it kept dry?
@robertcolcombe6893
@robertcolcombe6893 3 дня назад
It’s outdoors on my strawberry beds , it is good for water retention as well, I had to put straw as well around the plants to try and stop the slugs
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 3 дня назад
I've always found that slugs LOVE living under wet straw, that's what I think is a big benefit of strulch if you keep it dry!
@robertcolcombe6893
@robertcolcombe6893 3 дня назад
My strawberry beds are outdoors Steve , I could make hoops and cover them with polythene
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 3 дня назад
It’s probably not worth it, I only cover my second early bed because I like a very long strawberry season. My main crop beds aren’t covered
