Hey Caleb. I think the JWs are intellectually dishonest nearly all the time but regarding John 1:1 they aren’t completely wrong. From what I heard from Dan McClellan who is a very reputable Bible scholar the translation is closer to something like “and the word was deity” rather than the word was God. Also the Bible doesn’t say anything about Jesus being God so they’re actually correct on this doctrine. The trinity is a post biblical invention. Happy to call out this cult any time but we need to be intellectually honest as well and not make misleading claims. Happy to provide any sources if you want to do any further research on this. So Jesus was a God in the sense that all other life and objects were brought into existence THROUGH him,... not BY him. He was Given designs and GIVEN holy spirit and GIVEN supreme knowledge of how to do this as he was not eternal like Jehovah. If you don't believe this read John 17:3 where he calls his father "The ONLY true God."
