The name comes from the Chinook language and means bird.
The MV Kalakala was originally built as the Peralta for the San Francisco Bay in 1926. The ferry burned to the waterline on May 6th 1933. It was then purchased by the Black Ball Line and rebuilt as modern streamlined ship. She was launched in her iconic form on July 3rd 1935.
For most of her career she sailed from Bremerton to Seattle but in the summers of 1955 to 1960 she sailed between Victoria and Port Angles.
She was retired as a ferry in 1967 and then became a cannery in Alaska. She has since been brought back to Puget Sound.
This unique ship has been allowed to decay over the decades and is likely too far gone to be saved.
