I've been engaged for a little while now and it baffles me how crazy people can get over a wedding. We saved some money, could of had a hell of a wedding but we put a deposit on a house instead. A wedding is just one day, a house is for our future. We're probably just going to go away somewhere, quietly get married, and have a party when we get back with the people we love.

Yes! Common sense: a wedding is a day; a marriage is a lifetime. Sacrifice short-term for long-term gain. Finally: the couple could always have a renewal of their vows (in a lavish ceremony) once their finances are more stable. Plus: she may have a bigger ring 💍 😉

@kerryberryb8199 First of all, my married name is Berry. 😊 Second of all, you've made the right decision. My husband and I eloped to Vegas including a mini vacay and we'll be celebrating our 27th anniversary this year. It's definitely about the marriage and not the wedding. Finally, I wish you and your husband many years of love and happiness together.

We called everyone on Monday & told them we were getting married on Friday (everyone thought it was a have to situation, but it wasn't). My aunt bought my beautiful wedding dress at a store going out of business, my cousins made the flowers, my husband just wore a regular suit. We got married in my childhood church that I was a member of. My uncle was the deacon of the church, so he performed the wedding. My other 2 aunts made my cake. It was a very fast & cheap wedding. But we just celebrated our 29th wedding anniversary, we've been together for 31 years. Total cost, including the dress, flowers, & cake ingredients, was less than $300. To us, it was beautiful. We had our family there & we promised to love each other, and we're still keeping that promise. If I had the chance to go back & change anything, I wouldn't. Our cheap, rushed, little wedding did its job & still continues all these years later.

It's crazy how much the prices have risen in the last 4 years ... (friends of me got married in 2015 for 3000 €, today they would have paid at least double of that)

Similar to my wife and I...very low key ceremony, just family and friends, in grandma & pop's backyard surrounded in beautiful blooming Dogwood trees...grandma made Lynn's dress...Pop grilled ribs and smoked a brisket...mom made all the sides, mint julep iced tea...dad drought his "homemade beer" .. and I paid the pastor a hundred dollar bill 👍we've been married 54 years !! Grandma & pop had willed their home to me, and after their passing, we moved in...live there to this day...we have been blessed every day of our lives, two daughters & eight grands 💖

My father is a Minister and he is very particular about the weddings he officiates for exactly the above reasond. He also requires all couples he marries to meet with him in advance to ensure they have their priorities right (Marriage, not just ceremony). He also refuses to preform a wedding ceremony if any of the wedding party are drunk. It is a solemn occasion of commitment, not a frat party! He asks them to save the alcohol for the reception. He warns them not to test the boundaries as he will hold firm. In 35 years he has only had one wedding test the "drunk" rule....
@jeanams07
@jeanams07 4 месяца назад
Did he refuse to actually marry them?? That is awesome if he did. I always think it is ridiculous for any bride or groom to get drunk before the ceremony, regardless of if they are marrying in a church or not. Having a drink or two before is one thing, but to not be in the right frame of mind to commit to their vows is ridiculous, and says they aren't taking it seriously. I really wish more officiants would be like your dad. I feel like we would have less divorces that way, because if they can't show up sober to their wedding then they would never get married at all.

I got married late in life and am so glad I waited. Two days before the wedding, my elderly mother was in a serious auto accident. My wife REFUSED to let the wedding go on unless my mother was there. We had to arrange for a medical 'cabulance' at the last minute, but got it worked out. We had someone 'portray' my mother at the rehearsal so we could figure out how to overcome obstacles as they made themselves known. One was how to get mom into the best position to see everything. We decided the thing to do was bring her in as everything started. But we made a plan. Instead of one of the groomsmen pushing her in, my wife to be and myself pushed her down the aisle as the wedding march played. We were concerned how she would feel when the two groomsmen lifted her to her seat. She had it planned, however, and turned to everyone and said that, if she knew this was the way to have two 'studly' men carry her around, she would have broken her hip YEARS ago. We had a fun wedding and still together after 13 years. What I want to know is why the groom went through this. he MUSt have known she was a raging problem WAY before all of this. And the tragedy of the family paying for this when they KNEW it would last only a few months. Surprising it made it six months. In our case, my mother absolutely MADE the wedding an intimate affair, as it should be. Selfies as you walk down the aisle? Are you.... No, you are not kidding.

That's just wonderful! My sons also married late in life (to the point that I doubted I'd live to see grandchildren) although the oldest had no "ceremony" to speak of. The youngest, though, had to plan theirs on a tight budget, so one of her co-workers agreed to have the wedding at her house, very generous I thought, and a lovely home. Anyway, her father is a musician so he played his fiddle for the ceremony. When it came to seating, in addition to folding chairs, they pushed a sofa close to the spot where the ceremony would be, because both my mother and I are profoundly disabled--she's an amputee and 87, while I walk with forearm crutches so can't walk very far. When some of the guests tried to sit on this sofa, I overheard the bride's mother telling them to move, that the sofa was reserved for "the groom's family". She's such a lovely person! And postscript--I did live long enough to see a grandchild, she has three children from a previous marriage, and my only "blood grandchild" is now three years old! Anyway, I'm very glad you are very happily married to this day, sir.

As a PK (Preacher’s Kid), the Pastor missing the wedding was completely valid. They said that the reunion had been planned FOR YEARS. I’m sure that when the wedding date was brought up, he told them about his obligations. So if it was far enough in advance, they could have moved the wedding date… otherwise it was either last minute or they were being buttholes about that too. Yes, he is the Pastor, but he also has a family. I can’t tell you how many family events we had to miss out on growing up due to obligations with the church… If Christmas Eve or Christmas was on Sunday, we had to make other plans around the Church for the holidays. Easter with the rest of the family? Didn’t happen because it’s Easter Sunday and our family lives 3 hours away. Heck, we’ve been gone on vacation all the way across the country and had to cut it short 3 days in when our Sheriff who was also a church member died in the line of duty… so I 100% stand with the Pastor regardless of other issues

I am a pastor who has done lots of weddings. This one was a prize winner. Here are some highlights I have experienced: 1. The bride arrived 45 minutes late to a backyard wedding, so we started the reception so people could get a little food and drink. 2. The time the "flower girl" was a Basset Hound. The wedding march was done by a bagpiper. Basset Hounds love to "hound" to bagpipes. 3. The time the groomsmen had been drinking booze outside and started weeving and bobbing during the ceremony, one passed out. 4. When the mother of the bride and the wedding coordinator got into a shouting match.

This is wonderful! If my life partner and I ever get married we plan to do the same. I used to think him saying that most weddings are Narcissistic was really cynical, but I am starting to agree with him. Not only from hearing stories like the ones that Charlotte has in these types of videos, but also from some weddings I have been a part of or heard of friends being a part of. I feel like, especially in this day and age where people are struggling to even be able to buy a house and not live for decades with student loan debt, that having a big expensive wedding is just plain dumb. Especially if you expect people to travel for it and what not. My sister did a pretty low key wedding, especially compared to the crazy Instgram worthy ones, but it still cost me over $4k to be a Bridesmaid.

The idea of trying to plan a huge ordeal stressed me out significantly more than the idea that I would be with the person I love for (ideally) the rest of my life, so I didn't so much as begin to try for a wedding ceremony; just me, my love, and a few good friends with a meal after was MORE than enough to make it a good day. I don't know why more people don't plan a good day for celebrating their union. Whatever their good day looks like, THAT should be your wedding. It's not a pinterest board, it's your life, you have to live that aesthetic and all these aesthetic-vibe curators leave out all the life mess it took to set it up for a reason.

I was in front of the courthouse by the fountain and a couple a little younger than me (early 50s?) asked me if I’d take their picture. They’d just gotten married. I said, “Gladly!” They introduced themselves and I found a spot with the fountain in the background that looked good and snapped a couple of pictures with their phones. They were so excited. I congratulated them from one Lisa to another and her handsome husband. Of course, it was all so wholesome, I posted about it on my Facebook. Then we built the reception around the ceremony day, etc. That’s what you do if having a particular officiant is so important to the couple. You don’t pitch a fit because a years-in-advance-planned event conflicts with the day you originally picked.

This! The reunion was planned YEARS in advance, it said. Move your wedding, or have the other minister. Period. You schedule with the availability of those most important to you (site, officiant, etc).

This line of thinking should really be the same for anyone people want to be in their wedding. Obviously pregnancies and that sort of thing sometimes can't be helped, especially if the wedding date was picked and venue booked, well before a Bridesmaid gets pregnant. But if someone who the Bride or Groom wants to be a part of their wedding has something major planned well before they pick their date, than it is up to them to schedule around them if it is that important to them for that person to be part of their wedding party or part of the ceremony in any way.

My nephews wedding was GREAT. We got the local rec center, it was new & huge. MoG works catering, best friend is fancy Chef, Grooms best buddy wanted to be a DJ when he grew up... Of course, he was the DJ. Groom was studying to be a pastor, has a great mentor. We all love crafts. Groom fell in love with Bride on the 1st day of 6th grade. He got off the bus & said he was going to marry this girl ❤. We spent $1500 on food & prepared it ourselves. There were about 200 guests. The Wedding was so much fun & about $5000. The dress cost $1000. The Brides daddy would've given his princess ANYTHING. They had their DREAM WEDDING AND DIDN'T GO INTO DEBT.... They've been married 10 yrs & have a 4yr old & a 1 yr old. They're great together. I'm so proud of the Man & Father he's become. He thinks thru every detail. ❤❤❤ H & M....

We had no money for a big wedding. 1981. I made my dress and my little sister's bridesmaid dress. I made the cake, we made the food, my husband wrote some music and his auntie played the church organ, he also made mixed tapes for the party and we walked to mums house after church because it was close. It cost without the grooms suit, just £250. every payday for months l bought 2 bottles of fizzy wine. It was a great success. Still together. Still in love.

We had a wonderful wedding, 2007. It was not the first for either of us. My wedding dress was bought online, on sale, for about $40. Cream-colored knit gown and could be worn again, because it was more of a cocktail dress than a wedding dress...very simple and very nice. I already had a pair of great shoes. My hairdresser did my hair, and it was gorgeous, with pearls and tiny flowers...free, as a wedding gift. Since we had met at an Agape Feast, and since the wedding was held in the evening in lieu of Vespers, we served Israeli finger food; lots of it and wonderful variety. It was catered by some of my Sisters in Christ...as a gift. The flowers to decorate the church were given to me by another Sister in Christ; they had been used for her daughter's Quinceana a month previous. I had the florist deliver fresh flowers earlier that day for the service; they complemented the silk ones and we used them that night for the wedding. I think I paid about $35 for a gorgeous bouquet. My Sister in Christ, Nives, took me to Sam's Wholesale as her guest, and I was able to buy all the food and the non-alcoholic champagne...I think the food was about $50 and the beverages were $75. It was beautiful, and most of all, even though our pastor was officiating...we were joined by Christ.

I'm not a trained musician or professional organist, but I did have a chord organ when I was younger, and when one of my cousins was going to get married and couldn't afford to hire an organist for the wedding, I agreed to play the wedding march, the bridal chorus and their song (A Time For Us) for nothing. It was my gift to them. I practiced those songs daily for several months, until I could have played them, without the sheet music, in my sleep. It was held on the 4th of July, in the bride's parent's yard, and it was beautiful, followed by a potluck reception and cake cutting. I wish I still had that old organ, but I eventually donated it to a charity auction several years later because I couldn't play it at the apartment I was living in at the time.

Wow. My daughter got married last fall and there was no drama at all. Groom's father and stepmother had to leave shortly after the service because she has serious health issues that just exhaust her quickly. My daughter made accommodations for her and for another guest who is confined to a wheel chair because that what civilized people do. Nobody was asked to pay for anything. Presents were welcomed but not required. There was a lot of homemade wine and mead. I was exhausted because I just finished the final touches on the gown that morning and added gussets to the groom's shirt. She was stunning. He was handsome. It was lovely and everyone had a happy drama free day.

On the morning of the wedding, the groom got a knock on the door. It was the bride's brothers. With $hotgun$. He was then "escorted" to the church. They said their vows, and then Bride and Groom rode off into the sunset on their Harleys.

I used to put together wedding bands for high-end weddings in Miami. How high-end? I only used musicians who toured with Grammy level artists (not the artists - their backing musicians). Needless to say these are some of the most talented professionals to work with. It made sense to me as a former touring musician myself to get the best of the best. Let me just say that five years of touring the world and living the (low budget) rock ‘n’ roll dream have NOTHING on the wedding craziness. Once I find a way to get around the NDA’s, I will write a book and the chapters will include titles such as, “ the breastpump that saved the wedding”, and “bride and groom get arrested on first dance”, or, “couldn’t stomp on the glass on the first three tries because my bride and I are blackout drunks”.

(Minister here!) This is why when i agree to officiate a wedding i make sure the planner, bride, groom, and family know that 1. Since i agreed to officiate, I'm not going to charge them. 2. I don't agree to officiate just any wedding. 3. I reserve the right to pull rank and put my foot down. For those reasons the bride's mother treating the organist like crap would not fly with me. I would be calling out the mother during a service by name and explain how she had treated and disrespected the organist, the congregation, and the Lord Jesus. I'd also be well aware of the clock and would be making sure the bride and her family would be aware of the clock. Bottom line, I'm not a hireling. I'm a servant of God. I am also a very gritty, no-nonsense minister. Bridezillas will whimper and limp away from me. The marriage is what is important, not the ceremony. The ceremony is a wonderful, beautiful thing but it is not as important as the marriage and not an excuse to treat people bad.

I was an amateur photographer. With my then boyfriend, now husband we shot a wedding of a friend of a friend. 8 hours the day of 16 hours of photoshopping and the bride had the AUDACITY to act like we never talked about her paying us. Got a letter finally with a $50 check and a “thanks for what you did.” Had contracts for the handful of weddings we did after that. Until the mature bride we shot had her daddy come after us after she printed her pictures from Facebook! Done after that!

And the vendor coordinator tried to make me find her at the venue because he was familiar with us (we did a wedding there before) and he was afraid of the bride! As a professionally trained musician myself, the fact that the soloist's response was "I'm being paid" is a million percent the vibe. And $2500 for the wedding and probably a couple grand more for the people paying the soloist's travel cost... I wish the soloist had charged more.

I enjoyed this. Thank you. I remember two weddings from hell. One had the mother of the bride giving the head of the flower arrangers - who was the mother of my then girlfriend - a really hard time. I walked down, and told her I had more bad news for her, which was that the usual organist couldn't play for her wedding the following day, and I was being brought in in his place and was desperately trying to learn how to play (I was actually the organist). She flipped at that point. The second was a wedding at one of my churches where one of the choir member's sons wanted coaching to play the trumpet for it. I know very little about playing the trumpet, but said I would try. I suggested Friday evenings after the choir rehearsal. No, that wasn't acceptable, because the lad will have had a hard week at school. So I suggested after the Sunday morning services. No, because he liked a good sleep on Sunday mornings. So I suggested Sundays after Evensong. No, because he had to get ready for school. So I was expected to cancel an evening of teaching each week for several weeks to drive there and back and to teach him without a fee. I declined and said I couldn't afford to lose the money for teaching. The priest shouted at me and said I was getting paid for the wedding, and should attend rehearsals without charging. That was the day I resigned.

This story deserves an "American Graffiti" or "Animal House" type epilogue. The Bride: Got involved in a multi-level marketing scheme and lost everything. Currently works as a Wal-Mart greeter and lives in a trailer park. The Mother-of-the-Bride: Contacted a lawyer to sue to the church. After she heard the story and laughed her out of her office, the MOTB then threatened to sue the lawyer. She hasn't found anybody who will take the case. Grandma: Saved her money as no house was purchased. Is currently the talk of her bridge club, who thinks the whole story is better than Jerry Springer. The Father-of-the-Bride: Continues to date the nice church woman. Is telling people they want to spend a few years getting to know each other before considering marriage. The Groom: After the divorce, ran into the vocalist when she was in town to visit her mother. They had a few dates, but realized they can't build a relationship on a mutual dislike of the bride. The Vocalist: Took the entire experience as a learning lesson and increased her fees. The Pastor: Preached about the story of Job for two months straight. Finally a quiet word led him to a therapist, but he still prefers to preside over funeral services as it's less traumatizing. The Church Wedding Coordinator: Got a bonus for the iron-clad contract. The Organist: Collected her fee.

When the organist was talking about the church's Staff/Parish Committee, I thought this had to be a United Methodist wedding. I've been a Methodist all my life and the only drama that went on was the minister we wanted to marry us threw his back out and canceled. Good thing we had two ministers at our church. The story about grandma in the wheelchair reminded me that my great grandmother wanted to be there, but she was in the hospital. I wouldn't have minded a gurney there in the sanctuary to have her there.

Fun fact: English has what's called alternating stress patterns, so if a word, like "process," is both a noun and a verb then you stress the first syllable when using it as a noun (PRO-cess) and the second (or sometimes last) when a verb (pro-CESS). So you were right the first time, Charlotte!

My daughter got married almost 2 years ago, and they paid for their own wedding, because there was me, his mother, and his stepmother and rather than try to wrangle everyone's tastes, wishes, 'demands' they shut everyone out of the planning and did their own thing. Wouldn't even let me do anything other than attend dress shopping. I was not offended, just curious, but after having met some of his family, I completely understood why they do strongly gatekept the whole process. I had a great time at the wedding, too! No stress!

I got married at my new brother-in-law's because they had a lakefront view, got my dress on sale for $300 (in 1988) and I think the most expensive thing was the flowers, because I went to a florist company owned by friends of my long-deceased grandmother for sentimental reasons, no discount or anything, and they turned out to be rather pricey. It's one day and I never thought it made sense to have a big wedding...but then my son got married. I wasn't part of the planning, but it was so beautiful, so pleasant, with wonderful food, dancing, and the most wonderful energy of love and joy. When it's a true celebration of a wonderful couple, it can be one of the most joyous days of your life.
