I got this for my girlfriend a couple years ago, and though she was not that much into knives at the time, she now never leaves the house without the Leek. And yeah, it was a gateway --drug-- knife, she now watches as much of these videos as I do.
i buy one every year on my birthday, because i either break the tip, loose it, or the spring breaks. and yet ive owned about 7 of them and i still love it.
Bro, liking this knife! I'm not a big folder guy, but the way this baby glides through a beer box is making me want it...and a beer...oh geez look at the time, half past beer-thirty already!
This channel is really unique for knife reviews like it a lot! Have the composite D2 black wash, just reprofiled it with the lansky twice, solid edc for easy tasks.
I bought this a while ago in D2. Great knife. Really. Cuts jeans really well. Ask me how I know... okay, since you insist, I'll tell you. One day during some intense EDCing (walking thru the parking lot at work) I suddenly felt a bit of a tug at my watch pocket where my (not so) trusty Leek was ridding shotgun. Uncharacteristically curious about random tugging near my crotch region I decided to look down and OMFG: my unlocked Leek had partially 'deployed' and was busy snacking on my (literally 2 day old) jeans. Lucky for me I am well trained in EDCing so I didn't immediately panic and ram my hand into my pocket or hyperventilate and sit down so the point could jab deep into my femoral artery (either of which would have been quite humorous and impressive to the ol' boss and co-workers). Now I carry the sneaky little bastard with the lock on at all times... well, unless I'm using it for something like cutting shit up, etc. My EDC blade deployment time is slightly slower, but somehow it just feels like the right thing to do. My crotch reason agrees. Still like the knife and carry it often. True story.
The others aren't as crotch-hungry? Maybe Leek is not so much the name of the knife as it is a threat, like "you gonna Leek boy if-un you don't treat me right!'" The only comp I have is the Cryo in G10. The geometry of the speed 'safe' mechanism in the Cryo seems to hold it closed much firmer than the Leek. Maybe because the Leek is so narrow there isn't room for it to go as far over center when closed. Dunno. Right now I seem to be 'rocking' my CS Mini Tuff Lite more than the Leek. Much more secure in the hand, though the AUS8 kinda blows regarding edge retention.
Just found your channel and loving everything so far. Great videos that are full of info yet short and to the point (no pun intended). Also like the dry sarcastic humor lol
I got this knife for my birthday maybe 14 years ago - the plain Jane 1660. I have a lot of high-end autos but this has been my EDC ever since I got it. I've babied it; never pried with the point or tried to cut rebar ;), etc., and it's still like new. I think the quality of the newer ones might have declined a bit but mine is beautifully constructed to aircraft standards. In short, I love this knife.
Leeks are nice. Normally I not a fan of assisted openers, but it works fantastically well with this knife. Operation is practically the same as an auto. My only gripe is the lack of traction.
Totally agree. Only knife I don't mind being assisted, in fact, I'm glad it is. The stainless steel handles are too slippery for my taste though, and I've been bitten a couple times trying to do everything one handed.
Yeah... I like the showtime alright too. It's pretty much like an auto- my ganzo autos operate about as easily. Those have a button versus the stud here, but otherwise most people would confuse the two.
Had one of these and the assist-spring broke after about 3 months of very light (peeling fruit, sharpening pencils) use. Replacement spring came from factory within about one month (FOC) but allied to the flimsy blade tip I was put off the knife and gave it to my son. If you want small and light just splash out a little extra and get a Spyderco Delica like I did.
I'm a spyderco guy myself... this blade is ok. I do like it's deployment slightly better than Spydercos... but VG10 has treated me just fine as an EDC.
I know this is an old video but still fun to watch. I have a # of Ken Onion knives and like 'em all -- except for the speed opening. I find it's not very durable (even if a new spring is easy to do). I've removed the spring in nearly all of 'em except for the "rainbow'
My wife likes my Leek so much I bought her one so she'd leave mine alone! I have the Tac-Ti-Cool Black version and sadly it doesn't make it any better than the other versions.
ive been happy with my leek for a couple years. great utility. i carried it a lot when i was in the phase of carrying a "tactical" blade and a utility blade. its now just my backup light carry jacket knife and i stopped all that tactically tacticalness. i havent broken the tip off of my leek but i hear its pretty common. the leek feels very solid and i think its a good buy. mine was a christmas present. that lock was usually on when i went to draw it from my pocket. kind of annoyed me. the crkt ripple is pretty nice too and a ken onion design. i think it was a collab with h.r. giger cuz the handle scales look like a xenomorph. ball bearing though so opening is nice and smooth, pocket clip sucks and only one position too. the leek is cool. theres a bunch of variants. wish mine wasnt partially serrated but whatever. probably gonna grab a purple or rainbow bullshit anodized one for my friends birthday.
Advanced Knife Bro hell yes man. New Belgium does great things. And the only time I've ever had boulevard was in southern Missouri and just happened to stumble soon it at a random bar, but it's been one that has always stuck out as being a great
Another solid review. I always wonder how they came up with the name "Speed Safe". It is because men like anything that is fast and dangerous, errrrr safe? Ok, maybe i don't know what I am talking about, it's just a weird name to designate at as an assisted opening blade. Anyhow, now I want to buy an Onion for myself.
The torsion bar helps the knife from being accidentally [gravity] deployed and your fingers aren't near the cutting surface on deployment. Still a silly name, but I guess that made them feel it was a 'safe' technology. Ken Onion was the one that came up with SpeedSafe. More info on KAI's page, for those interested in boring things.
Was that a spoiler alert about Frodo coming to Game of Thrones and using Arya's sword the Needle? Should have known with your growing RU-vid Cred that you would be in the know about such things. Thanks for the review Knife Bro
OK steel, but definitely lightweight and nice deployment. I have to use the lock, kinda get excited around knives. Damn it, have to change my shorts again.
It ships tip-down. Most people swap it to tip-up, like the one shown, which is tip up right handed. The Leek is a right-handed knife only; Sorry for the 10% that are left-handed. No swapping the clip to the lefty side.
Perhaps you can review that new Blur knife that's supposed to come out. Doubt anyone's reviewed that one either!? Sorry, just keeping up with the sarcastic theme of the video... Seriously though, more Spyderco reviews would be appreciated AKB...
I own this knife and you might think the speed safe is hard to activate because your Kershaw Leek is brand new if you use it for a while the speed safe will only take a little pressure.
Question, im not a knife enthusiast, but oddly enough I was in a store that had a really cool knife which made start paying attention to knives. Since you're what i consider the exalted grand pubah, sultan of short swords I figured you could lend a hand. I like the Ken onion Kershaw but what knife would suit a guy who would have occasional cutting use for his daily activities. Any suggestions plastic or metal body? Also how does learn how to deploy a blade safely? Is there a video? I have never used a knife and don't want to slice or dismember a digit. I'm a loyal flashlight zealot who wants to come to the knife side.
Deployment is just practice. Every knife is slightly different. My first nice dedicated knife was the Spyderco Endura 4. Very simple easy deployment, and a nice long cutting edge. If that's too bug a knife for you try the Delica 4. Plastic handles are genrally referred to as FRN (fiberglass reinforced nylon). They are durable, wear well, and don't break. There's other handle materials like G10, that is a grippy fiberglass type stuff- those wear well to. But yeah check out those reviews. If you're looking for something old fashioned- try out the Opinel no 8- which I also reviewed.
I use the Spyderco Sharpmaker, with the extra diamond rods. I currently have a stroping system on order, and plan on learning that when I get it in. For most of my knives though, it's the sharpmaker right now.
What do you think is the best Tactical flashlight you own? I'm talking about about a bulletproof quality flashlight. I just ordered a Nitecore p16 about a week ago and have not got it yet, I'm deciding if I should send it back and just buy a Surefire light. Since you review a lot of light which is the best tac light?
The Nitecore P16 is a decent light. The thing with surefire is... to find a comparable output model in a surefire in lumens (brightness) and candela (beam distance) you'll pay 2 or 3 times as much. I'd wait until you get it... try it out and see if there's anything you really like or dislike about it. I don't see anything wrong with the light personally. It's got a decent high and a nice low.
Most of the Nitecore reviews I've seen are very mixed. The lumens don't bother me as long as it is not below 200.. I'm skeptical about the nitecores.. It does not help that they are from China either lol but I will test it out and see how bulletproof it is... If the fucking thing ever arrives!
would be glad to loan you some to review... i collect them and own well over 100 Spyderco's. I'm sure I have some you would kick unicorn ass if you reveiwed them? let me know
It's a little crazy. I'm beginning to suspect it will eventually be a good portion of my retirement. I have a lot of money into them, and they hold/increase in value pretty well. I think AKB should review one of the new PM2 in M4 steel, but it sounds like he wants to review the mid-year release knives coming out soon. Guess we'll see?
Lefty Hook Indeed. I have the PM2 S30V and S110V, but passed on the other offerings. I'm just not the kind of guy that has more than one of the same knife, so I decided to force myself to be happy with the S110V and sold the S30V one to a friend for half the buy price.
+Jeremy Madsen The s110v Para2 is a great version that holds an edge for a very long time and fantastic corrosion resistance, but man it's hard to sharpen!
Lefty Hook So far, I haven't had to do anything more than strop it. I'm not a hard user though. It took all of my self control to not buy the Jade/normal/ghost G10 PM2 in M4 from BladeHQ. I bought a $170 knife from them 3 days prior and forced myself to sit and watch them sell out.
I picture Ken Onion slaving away all day in a Chinese sweatshop. Then when he's had it all with life he jumps out a window only to be bounced back into the sweatshop by an elastic net only to make more leeks.
"If you like knife reviews where I review knives you already own..." Me- Just bought this knife yesterday... Also Me- I feel personally attacked lmao Great review though man
+RideForLifeCR250R it's not new. I'm guessing this is the only review of mine you watched. I have several running jokes throughout my knife and flashlight reviews. This is one of them.
Advanced Knife Bro Ahh ok, I missed that one. Yes I just opened a BLKW Leek this morning and decided to pull up some reviews again since I hadn't really watched too many knife reviews since I totally dove back into firearms in 2012. I had been wanting a Leek to edc for quite a while now, great size and really dig the BLKW. Thanks for the review.
+RideForLifeCR250R No problem man. It's a nice blade. Gotta love that speedsafe right? Yeah I guess if you haven't seen a few, it might seem odd. Thanks for checking it out!
Advanced Knife Bro for sure man. Having received this Leek has certainly renewed my interest in blades so I'll be checking out some more blade reviews. I was looking at some of Kershaw's other models and the BLKW Link Tanto has caught my eye and I think I'd like to pick one up. Would you happen to have done a review on that one?
ivehad2 or 3 of theseand after a few mos of edc and constant playing with it (open/close-open/close) they seem to ware out or loose the spring tension making the knife require a lil wrist snap assist in order to open.... otherwise great edc
I've also heard of this, of the springs wearing out, sometimes breaking. No problem with mine yet after a couple thousand deployments, but it'll happen someday.
I've bought this exact knife at least 4 times ..... I don't know why I watched this video, I know I like this knife, and I know I'm also really good at losing this knife
OMG ... look up the word bloviate! And Frodo has nothing to do with Game of Thrones! With all due respect you know very little. And let's see, let's guess that Kershaw sells 1,000 of these. Are we to believe they lock Onion in the shop until he sharpens all the knives ... really?
