I try to avoid hyperbole but I think it's a tough ask to find a more perfect pop song - short, up-tempo, simple hook, tender bridge, sublime harmonies throughout. Joyous.
My sentiments exactly, simply the best pop song ever. I can't believe it is nearly 34 years old. Why it wasn't a hit, mystifies me still. Thanks to youtube I can get my daily fix though, lol.
At ladt I have found this song. I heard it when I was 16 in my dad's car while on holiday. The lyrics and melody have stayed with me for 34 years and the other day it popped into my head again. Brilliant song
That is bizarre, I first heard it too in my dad's car when I was 16. Never forget the date - 29/07/1981. It was Prince Charles/Lady Di's wedding day and a public holiday. My dad wasn't wasting his day watching it, so we went out for the day and left the females around the TV. Radio 1 played it twice during the day and we went home via the local HMV to buy it. Why it was only a Radio Hit, still mystifies me 37yrs later. Great memoties
Steve Tatler Steve, Sean here, friend of Geoffs I still play this, one good reason & the LP, still a currant sound, should do a reunion gig, I remember waves in Kingston also Keith, Drew, Geoff & yourself at the Double 66, loved the early Strat 🤓👍🏻
I remember sneaking in to Joe's rehearsals and Steve being really nice to me and chatting and joking when he was on stage ....lots of smiles in those days .....julie
Having known the Drummer for over 40 years, walking his Dog while they were in the Studio, steve is a great guitarist, as is the band, the background of each member is a tribute to their abilities to record great songs
Finally figured out the lyrics! Was it really just our last good night when I saw the light and I know that you've been telling lies Oh, no, not me, I don't wanna cry You could talk about it all night long but the feeling's gone and I don't need you to tell me why Oh no, not me, I don't wanna cry 'Cos you know, I've got you figured out and you have got nothing to shout about if this is love, I don't really wanna play I wanna know why you want to stay Was it really just our last good night when I saw the light and I know that you've been telling lies Oh, no, not me, I don't wanna cry You could talk about it all night long but the feeling's gone and I don't need you to tell me why Oh no, not me, I don't wanna cry I know all about your little plan find a fool and check up the thing you can well, it seems it's never gonna be that way I wanna know what you want to stay Was it really just our last good night when I saw the light and I know that you've been telling lies Oh, no, not me, I don't wanna cry You could talk about it all night long but the feeling's gone and I don't need you to tell me why Oh no, not me, I don't wanna cry Oh no, not me, I don't wanna cry Oh no, not me, I don't wanna cry I don't wanna cry I don't wanna cry I don't wanna cry I want to know what you want to stay
+Zander Grier Good call, excellent lyrics. Just one small mistake (sorry for being pedantic). The verse starting, "find a fool and check up the thing you can", is actually "check everything you can". Nice to find somebody else who loves this song as much as I do.
@NewBornEll No, thank-you and the rest of The Keys for giving us I dont wanna cry. 30yrs since I first heard it, I still play it at least once a day. Its pop perfection. Thanks again.
THE KEYS - I DON'T WANNA CRY Was it really just our last good night when I saw the light and I know that you've been telling lies Oh, no, not me, I don't wanna cry You could talk about it all night long but the feeling's gone and I don't need you to tell me why Oh no, not me, I don't wanna cry 'Cos you know, I've got you figured out and you have got, nothing to shout about if this is love, I don't really wanna play I wanna know why you want to stay Was it really... I bought this when it came out and couldn’t believe it wasn’t a huge hit, when I think how well the La’s did with ‘there she goes’, perhaps it was just a question of timing.
@Xplosion1974 - they had six 7" singles - 'Just a camera' was first - then they had three from the album - 'One good reason' (later covered by The Big Heat) - 'I don't wanna cry' and 'Greasy money'. They then released another two - 'Suspicious' and 'Runanway' They were all common at the time (although I don't have Suspicious). I don't wanna cry was played on radio 1 a lot and I thought it was gonna be a hit. Greasy money was also played on the radio.
Too true, its unique, simply unique. Listen to their album, that's great too, but nothing can ever match I don't wanna cry. You cannot better perfection.
I remember being at the London Studios & taking Geoff Dog for a walk & he slipped the Lead.....He ran off & Then followed me back, this song always reminds me....
@richranger Had no idea Geoff Britton was in this band. Shame on Trouser Press Guide To New Wave Record Guide for not mentioning this tid-bit, though said guide mentions The Keys Album which is why I'm here checking out this great music!
I’m thinking about covering this just so I can get it on streaming services for everyone. It seems because of label disputes the og will never be on streaming.
I first heard this as a cover by the Lemon Twigs. What a friggin great song. I can’t find it on Apple Music or through Soundhound…..anyone know where I can get it? help!
I remember this song being played on the radio and have looked for it for years - it is out of print or something. Doe anyone remember the b side Somebody's Listening In?
I loved this album! I have been searching for the CD for 20 years. I want the CD or download. My vinyl is a tad worn. Any information would be appreciated.
@flonines Hi, have you got a copy yet? Don't particularly want to sell The Keys Album, but its up "in loft' doing nothing. Have you heard the album? They were such an amazing band, lyrics, vocals, harmonies etc. Why they "never made it" is beyond me. Anyway as I say, there is one upstairs doing nothing.
@NeilThompson30 Is it just me, or is this the best single ever, not to be a hit? Radio 1 played it to death in 1981. Prince Charles and Lady Di were getting married around that time, perhaps it just got 'lost' in the (excitement) !!
