The original Kia Soul EV was one of the first electric cars we saw in the UK, but sales were hampered by a high price, limited range, a charging network in its infancy and general apathy towards EVs. The electric version was sold alongside conventionally powered Souls.
This all-electric model is now the only kind of Soul you can buy. How much does the Kia Soul EV cost? The high price remains - it costs around £35,500, but its 64kWh lithium-ion battery delivers up to 280 miles of range, and plugging it into a 100kW DC charger will replenish the battery to 80% in less than an hour.
The decent range of the Soul EV could well be the deciding factor for customers choosing between the ever-increasing number of compact rivals. Neither the popular Nissan Leaf or Renault Zoe can match the maximum range of the Soul EV, while the Hyundai Ioniq is a capable contender, but is still unable to match the Soul for distance covered on a single charge.
A Volkswagen ID.3 Life Pro Performance version is similarly priced, while you'll save around £5,000 if you opt for the Hyundai Kona Electric, although again neither are able to match the Soul EV for range. As Nicola Hume finds out in this review, the Kia is a fantastic EV - if not for one thing...

The Soul is built for a group of people who like the box shape. It is convenient to get in and out of. It has usable space inside. It fits in the space that you think it will. Those round things just are deceiving as to where there will fit in to a garage or parking space. Some of us like the Soul. Please don't take that away from us. Buy something else if you don't like it.

Box shape is great. I hate SUVs and limousines who waste so much cargo and headroom space in the back. Maybe switching to BEV in a couple of years, the E-Soul is currently on my shortlist. 4x4 would be great.

There is no doubt the Soul is a brilliant EV, but the Postman Pat's van styling won't appeal to everyone, although I don't mind it personally. If you don't need the size and bulk of the Niro EV, then this is a good alternative..... There is also the fact that the South Koreans are producing what seems to be the most efficient EV's around...

The Kia Soul has always been a Marmite car. Personally I love the individuality of the design. I had a diesel Kia Soul (Tempest) about 10 years ago and it was simply brilliant for my daily commute and travelling around workplace locations. Visibility was excellent, comfort very good, economy very good perhaps the only fly in the ointment was boot space however, it was still more than sufficient for ‘normal’ use. I went to see the Kia Soul EV at a dealer in west Cumbria and the salesman said to my wife and I, "why bother with one of them" and showed us the Niro and said "I wouldn’t bother buying EV, get a hybrid". I bought neither and walked out disgusted and disappointed. A few months later I went to Kia in north Cumbria and ordered the new hybrid Sportage - yet the be even built I might add 😡 The west Cumbria dealership is a joke and deserve to go bust the way they treat its customers.

Love my Soul, you can always find it in the car park.. The Niro is better all round but is just safe and bland. Oh and with seats down the Soul has more space then the Niro because of it's boxy back end

The shape is excellent. Thinking of buying it in a couple of years. Most cars waste so much space in the back, except for station wagons and vans. But they are often not available as BEVs with a usable range.

Nice one Nicola, a great artistic drawing age 34. I wouldn't say it's ugly or offensive, it's just as err.. character, a visual personality if you like. One thing for sure is that if they're not eaxactly flying off the forecourt they should be good value used compared to some other personalities. I'd even go as far to say I quite like it. The only slight possible issue (that is also a plus) could be those soothing sounds after all you wouldn't want to drop off to sleep in a traffic jam. The Lively Forest would also have me getting a tad more concerned about creepy crawlies around.

I love the looks of this car. All the others look THE SAME!. The Kia E-Soul is high, its square roof makes carryin loads easier , it has a nice big rear window, and a moderate size bonnet. We had a Chevy Orlando (petrol) before which was huge and could carry a wardrobe, and the Soul is like a mini version of the Chevy. Cool, different, practical, and I prefer to stand out in the carpark!

It's so annoying. Any changes you make revert when you turn it off, it beeps CONSTANTLY, the "helpful" steering tries to unite you with hedges, the CC brakes randomly near parked cars, I hate driving one of these for work. And fully charged it reads at 194 mile range, assuming you don't need Aircon or sound or lights...

People don't buy the Soul because it is ugly? I couldn't disagree more. Looks are subjective and I am sure there are many people who like this aesthetic. The reason it isn't selling is that it seats 4 people but can only carry the stuff of 2. What is the point of a long range battery in a car if you can't load it with luggage and take it on a long run? Personally I think the E-Niro (pre-facelift) is an uglier car but it is far, far more practical and therefore infinitely more desirable.

@jonathantaylor1998 2 года назад
I know EV-ers always go on about "ground-up EV" but, when you've got a drivetrain as super-efficient as in this Kia, it kinda doesn't matter that it's not a bespoke EV design... In fact, Kia's only current actual ground-up design - the EV6 - is pitifully in-efficient in comparison...! 🤣
@loosabway3400
@loosabway3400 2 года назад
A number of problems actually: 1) Its an electric car with a large battery - this means over its lifetime it is much dirtier and consumes more energy than an ICE car 2) It's not a Tesla, so you will spend your life looking for and waiting for access to, charging points 3) The quoted range is a fantasy 4) It's comically expensive - there are so many desirable, petrol options for that money and if you spent it on a used ICE... 5) Yeah, its ugly Cars like this exist because a misguided, corrupt Government has bought into the myth that Electric Cars are a solution and has cut Company Car Tax to make them irresistable. How much money exchanged to facilitate that decision, who knows? Let's not bother boring each other with false environmental arguments - it's all about the Company Car Tax.

It's not the look of the Soul that will hinder sales! It's actually a beautiful cute automobile. It's the fact that people don't want to pay ten thousand dollars more for a stupid electric car than a gas powered Soul! And I don't want to wait for an hour to charge the batteries when I can fill up on gas in five minutes!! BTW, if you have to replace the batteries on an EV, it could cost up to $30,000!! We don't want EV's shoved down our thoats! And the Nero is ugly, not the Soul! Stop trying to brainwash us with these idiotic electric cars!! I hope they all flop!!

My wife got one of these in March this year (after a 6 month lead time). We LOVE it. In the colder months we were getting about 3.8 miles per kilowatt hr , in the warmer months we’ve be averaging 4.2! In summer we went to Orkney with it, and due to the smaller boot we had to slap the roof box on it, and it handled it like a trooper, only dropping the average mpKWh about 4.0. My only complaint, and I think this is a must for Uk EV’s (especially up here in Scotland) , Kia dropped the Heat Pump for the Maxx model (it was on the original First Edition) Apart from that, it’s a great car

We've had a couple of family holidays in it and the boot is plenty big enough for luggage for two adults and 2 teenagers. The back seats fold with a split so various loading options depending on how much space you need. Great interior head room and leg room. As a family we are all about 6ft and no problems for anyone on long journeys. Intuitive cockpit. Heated front seats and the heated steering wheel is a godsend on cold mornings. I certainly wouldn't go back to an ICE car and don't expect I'll be getting rid of my Soul for a looong time. Highly recommend!

I believe that car makers are going to make huge profits in the long run with EVs due to the bigger margins. The long-term service cost for these cars is minimal compared to conventional cars. While they continue to charge the same price as ICE cars for EVs.

My coworker has a white Kia Soul EV and I actually started admiring it today. I hope to possibly lease one for my birthday next year in May!🤞🏼

I didn’t think it looked like a shoe until you said it… Is the Hyundai Kona a better car of the 2? From the stats it appears to be the same car, but with a better range (I have just swapped company cars with a colleague for a month, my petrol octavia estate for his Kona electric) and the Kona can do 310 miles on a full charge? Would I rather a car that looks like a shoe or a frog?

I owned a 16 plate diesel in the Mixx trim (black with red roof) and it looked fantastic. I regret getting rid of it, it had all the kit you could ask for, was economical and extremely comfy, even on the big 18” wheels. Amazing stereo system. Wish I still had it! Very underrated car and it looks like nothing else on the road. It’s very eye catching if you get it in the right colour!

I’ve been waiting so long for this in the US (not the old ones with a 90 mile range)

Swapping from a 5l sports coupe I was surprised how much fun the Soul Maxx is out and about on the roads. Would love to have the choice of colours available in the US, lime green would have been the one to pick.

Soul is one of the few distinctive EV's out there, in the 80's it was the it's the SAAB 900, in the 90's the Ford KA etc. Understated cool

268 miles is trash and about 100 miles behind the Telsa at the same cost. And a Telsa battery replacement is half the cost of a new Telsa! Like. WHY?! Fact is the EV market is still too weak.

I like how it looks and it turned my head. I don’t have a car now but this looks cute and I might get one because of it. So there.

No one is buying it because it has zero effort to sell it: no adverts, no salesmen pushing it. I have one (my second after the 2014 EV model) and it knocks spots off all other EVs, including Kia's own!

IT'S NOT TOO UGLY. IT'S TOO EXPENSIVE. I CAN GET A CHEVY BOLT FOR $27,000 THE BOLT IS WAY MORE UGLY, AND THAT SELLS. IT DIDN'T SELL FOR $42,000 OR $36,000

I think it looks great. Niro nice but dull. Kona nice but even more dull. - I like unusual cars.
