==================== TRANSCRIPT ========================
David Fincher’s THE KILLER on Netflix was my second favorite film of 2023! I love the premise of the film and the subtleties found in the character development. And the ending is spectacular.
What was The Killer about and what did you miss? In today’s video, I’ll explain The Killer!
My name is Jay Sherer, and I’m a screenwriter and a director who loves great stories. By the end of this video, I’ll try to lay out The Premise, the basic Structure, and the Character Development found in The Killer.
Chapter 1 - in PARIS: The Target
The Killer has posted up in a room at an abandoned WeWork building across from a hotel...
The Killer goes on to give us a second philosophical perspective to consider: “Do what thou wilt will be the whole of the law.”
To me, The Killer has very clearly painted a picture of himself as a nihilist.
The Killer is an assassin…
He’s a nihilist, which means he doesn’t believe his actions have any significance-killing humans isn’t much different than squashing an ant…
His goal is to be as robotic as possible…
Success is discipline and repetitious, like a machine…
The Killer waits patiently for a clean shot to materialize and controls his heart rate. He listens to music that he says helps calm him. Interestingly, a line from the Smiths’ song states: “I am human and I need to be loved…”
We hear the mantra recited: “Stick to his plan. Anticipate, don’t improvise. Trust no one. Never yield an advantage. Fight only the battle you’re paid to fight. Forbid empathy. Empathy is weakness. Weakness is vulnerability. Each and every step of the way ask yourself: what’s in it for me? This is what it takes. What you must commit yourself to if you want to succeed.” We’ll come back to this mantra several times.
He lines up his shot, fires, and… he hits the prostitute, NOT The Target.
After all these platitudes about what it takes to succeed, he FAILS.
Chapter 2 - DOMINICAN REPUBLIC/The Hideout…
Plot Point 1 was him killing the prostitute rather than The Target.
The first third of Act 2 is called The Hideout…
The Killer takes a jeep across the country to a remote mansion. He goes on to scour the city looking for green taxi cabs.
Act 2
Chapter 3 - New Orleans/The Lawyer.
The Killer shoots Hodges with a staple gun and watches him drown in his own blood.
Midpoint: Hodges & Dolores killed, and The Killer has the info he was looking for.
Chapter 4 - FLORIDA/The Brute
The Killer drugs The Brute’s guard dog, then enters his house and kills him.
Chapter 5 - NEW YORK/ The Expert
The Killer follows The Expert-played by Tilda Swinton-to a ritzy restaurant.
The key takeaway here is that the two characters are juxtaposed against one another.
Having finished all the whiskey tasters, she pours herself some whiskey from the bottle. The Killer takes that whiskey and gulps it down. That moment is CRITICAL, but we’ll come back to that. For now, just know that The Killer drinking the whiskey from her glass is Plot Point 2…
Chapter 6 - CHICAGO/ The Client
The Killer arrives in Chicago to hunt down The Client
The really important line here, when talking about how he might kill The Client: “maybe a radioactive speck on the lip of your favorite coffee mug. A slow death, mind you, from painful facial necrosis…”
The Epilogue - Dominican Republic
The first shot we get is a close up of a coffee cup, which he takes to his girlfriend on the deck of their amazing place in the Dominican Republic.
To me this suggests that his former worldview has collapsed. He’s just one of us, now…
Except, as he sits back in his chair: his face twitches…

This movie was so good. Saw it in theaters and the audio alone was just pure gold. I would say the audio was a character in itself. Hard to believe Fassenbender filmed this movie and "next goal wins" around the same time. The range in his acting skills is just amazing

Fassbender is amazing. And I agree, this film was awesome. The only film I liked better in 2023 was Oppenheimer!

Best parts for me was his getaway after the missed shot and also the fight with the brute.

One of the most important things he said at the end was, "Once I see his eyes, I'll have a pretty good idea how this is gonna go."

The twitch was a sign that he can't settle into normal life.When did the expert get the chance to plant poison on the glass when he did'nt show any intentention to drink.She was not expecting to see him and im sure the waiters wer'nt in on it.Also i'm expecting a part 2.

I had another commenter mention that most assassins carry an anti-poison serum, which still leaves a Part 2 on the table. But, the twitch is for sure necrosis. Because there’s no way the line about “painful facial necrosis” would be so descriptive without it mattering later in the story. The simple reasoning for The Expert is that she knows he’s coming, identifies that he’s following her, and one of her methods of assassinating people is to take them to that restaurant. Notice she says: “Bring me my bottle.” It’s all pre-planned. That’s my take. I’ve heard other takes, but I haven’t heard one that makes more sense yet… 🤷🏻‍♂️

It is a very good film that uses or plays to Fincher's strengths as a Director and story-teller, as while being noticeably different it still has similarities to many other Fincher films ("Se7en", "Zodiac" and others) and the casting of Fassbender is A++. Don't think he died or got poisoned though & there seems an opening for a sequel due to 'The Expert's conversation & opening him up further to introspection & change or progression as character where maybe the Client (Claiborne, being a billionaire) has turn of hubris & decides To Go After him ... seems likely but also arguably too easy of plot possibility. Guess we'll see. Very good breakdown & analysis tho. Nice work.

Yeah, I’m curious as to whether it gets a sequel. There are more comics. If it does, I feel like he’ll have some sort of antidote. But also, it doesn’t feel like Fincher would do a sequel. Maybe, maybe not. But I agree, it’s amazing and so is Fassbender!

One thing I found odd was when the expert failed to eliminate the killer because he was still abroad, she would of known out of basic instinct that he would take revenge because the brute assaulted his lady friend. So I find it very strange she didn't take better precautions like leaving town to avoid confritation. When they were at the table at no point did the expert remove her hands from the table, so the bottle must of been poisoned beforehand.
@HowStoriesWork
@HowStoriesWork 2 месяца назад
Yeah, The Killer also notes that. My take on that is: 1) She’s tired of the lifestyle, and 2) She knows that he’ll find her eventually. I think she knows he’s following her, so she goes to the restaurant on purpose because one of the methods she can use is the bottle (which, as you noted, already has the spec).

@HowStoriesWork It would be great if David Finch made a movie titled "The Expert". Tilda Swinton is an excellent actress and her character was fascinating. P.S I've subbed to your channel, your analysis of movies has given me a much better perspective.

Nice take on the bear story. I thought the expert asked him why he was confronting her when the job could have been done in other ways related to that story. But your perspective makes it have more than one meaning.

If she poisoned him, why pull the knife at the end?

Great question. I think that’s just her trying not to get killed herself. She can be assured he’ll die, but she still tries a last-ditch effort to stay alive.

Absolutely hated this movie. You glossed over the execution of the innocent and helpful taxi driver, and ignored the colonialist undertones of the killer’s relationship with his “loyal” girlfriend and her loyal-servant brother. Brown, black, and female people are dispensible, yet there is - inexplicably - mercy for the white billionaire who WAS INDEED to blame for the entire mess. The cartoonish, endless, unrealistic fight scene from which the killer emerges with nary a scratch or broken bone. The storage units filled with passports, drivers licenses, and credit cards that never expire. This movie started out really strong, but quickly ran out of budget and reverted to boilerplate action-movie cliches and pseudo-intellectual drivel aimed at the “teen-aged boys with immature prefrontal cortices” market. I do like your take on the ending, though.

I actually think that all your points actually reinforce the main message of the film. Ultimately, we’re supposed to realize that the world is harsh, brutal, and unfair. And that’s why the Killer’s mantra ultimately fails. Because we’re not supposed to be rooting for him. So, I’m a little surprised you didn’t like it. Did you feel like they were making him out to be too much of a hero that we’re rooting for? Thanks for watching and commenting!

Not EVERYTHING has to be about race. You sound like the type of person that would lose their shit because there's more white jelly beans than black jelly beans in a bag.

The Taxi Driver had to die because he was exposed to his actual home with the right motive he could have lead someone back to him. And the end shows that he clearly was committed to not uprooting his girlfreind's lifestyle by relocating or maybe he was simply comfortable in the Dominican Republic (Redundancy Redundancy Redundancy). The Billionaire knows nothing of him and couldn't instigate an assassination or investigation. Even if he wanted to, it would be very difficult. The people who could get to him are already dead. The Billionaire wasn't to blame at all he was a customer The Killer is the only person "to blame" maybe the mercy shown in the end was some display of him taking accountability for having botched the job in the first place plus the backlash and attention it would draw if he were to be killed.
