The killer starts with our nameless protagonist staking out a sight and preparing to assassinate a target. The story wants to draw out the banal reality of being a hitman. Patience, practice, and waiting. To do this the first 15 minutes of the movie are about our main character waiting for the target. It's aim is to add realism but what it fails to do is compel the audience. The main character communicates with a monologue telling about his practice and precision and yet all this results in a failed assassination. We don't like the main character, which may be intentional, but all this leads to a story we are not attached to. It means we aren't drawn in. It's not until much later, almost 30 minutes in, that we find out the Killer's girlfriend was attacked and tortured. But that is a long time, too long before we encounter something to pull us in.
In the video I talk about what goes wrong with the story, that despite Fincher and Fassbender, managed to make an mediocre movie.
