This is a story that should be told more often, if only for the sake of mentally ill or incarcerated people. Doing something terrible, shouldn't mean that you're no longer human or that your life is over. Especially if it's a lesser crime or if you have a mental illness. Conditions in prisons and asylums are still unacceptable 100 years later. Maybe this story could change some of the right minds.

The fact that Tolkien worked on the OED is mentioned in his official biography. Makes one wonder how many other interesting characters there were...

Though not actually related, I can say that needing a Merriam-Webster Collegiate dictionary in my school supplies happened the same year we read The Devil and Daniel Webster and we were very convinced that Daniel and Noah were one in the same.

Fascinating. Thanks for this I believe our family are related to James Murray a fact of which we are very proud having several word needs and book enthusiasts amongst our ranks. Both my grandfather and grandmother married into the Murray clan but we are not sure which line came from James Murray himself. Yes. They married cousins !

People who write dictionaries look like Gary Cooper and hang out with dames who look like Barbara Stanwyck to research slang.
