We witnessed the kindness of strangers as we headed south on the Trent & Mersey Canal on Narrowboat One Day More and Morning Star. The boating community has some wonderful characters and Rob The Lock is one of the best! In this episode we travel from Westport Lake, through the historic potteries of Stoke on Trent to Stone, home of the original Joules Brewery. If you are new here we are Caroline and Pete, and 2021, after 10 years living in Texas, we sold up and moved back home to the UK to live full time aboard a 60ft narrowboat, One Day More, with our West Highland Terriers! I love the way you always toggle back and forth between b&w and color. It adds a special flavor to your vlogs. What a wonderful and helpful gem Rob the Lock is! Rob “The Lock” helped us twice. On the way from Westport Lake to Great Haywood and back 4 months later. He was brilliant, Mick let him steer the boat, we put his bike on the roof. I was unable at the time to manage the locks due to heart problems, he worked so hard.

Watched rob the lock before but not Mandy, now they are a great team so good for the narrow boaters. Such a help glad you tipped them they earned it if only more people were that good the world would be a better place. When i was a lorry driver working out of Heathfield Devon in the sixties i traveled to Stoke on Trent carrying clay from Cornwood and Kingsteignton in Devon was good to see some of the pottery works still working, Stay safe and well Ed 40 S of Vegas

I think Anthony doesn't like mornings too much. 😊 Lovely houses on the canal. I liked that round thing on the deck. You can be inside and outside at the same time. Having one person away makes it rough for the one person doing the locks. It has to be easier with that second person. How great it is to have help like that. I loved that tiny wooden boat. So cute. ❤

You're right Dorothy, Anthony doesn't do mornings too well unless he's off to the gym or work, then he's up and at 'em! Pete was a it of a task master when we were cruising with them, getting us moving early, as we had some long journeys to do to get to Crick in time for the show! It's definitely easier to have a second person to share the lock work with, and Rob and Tammy were absolute stars! Made that day so much easier and faster for all of us 😊

Agh, Stone! 17th May 2016 was when we started our four month canal boat odyssey on nb Lucy Ginger from Canal Cruising Company. She was 60 foot long and we took her through 57 foot locks on our way to Leeds. We had brought our two Havanese dogs from Canada with us and made some most amazing memories. The Canal Cruising Company were amazing and helped us to take Lucy to places hire boats were not necessarily encouraged to go. We have since done three more three month stints on the canals as well as the Brecon Beacons and the Union Canal in Scotland. The cherry on the cake was when we went from Limehouse to Teddington on the Thames - that was goose bump stuff.

Wow what an adventure! We have heard that our 60ft could go in at an angle in the 57ft locks, but it’s good to hear from someone who has tried it and lived to tell the tale! You have way more experience than us. We jumped right in to this liveaboard life with only a one day boat hire and a half hour on a trip boat on the Grand Union between us! Glad you are able to relive some of your memories!

Thanks so much Eric! Yes we went to the brewery, the Joule’s flagship pub, on a Saturday night and realised we were very under dressed compared and much older than the other customers! It was quite comical really, as it wasn’t like the other Joule’s pubs we have been in at all, which are all more our sort of cosy old world pub with our age of clientele 😂

We still laugh about our night out in Stone with Anthony (Paul was doing a magic show). We were sat by the window watching everyone queuing up to get in dressed in their finest going out clothes!! And there's us in our boat boots 😂. Like I said, it was not at all like the other Joules pubs we have been in!

Hello my friends - thank you for the video. Nice to have lock help and glad Rob and Tammy got married. A good 'pint' would be nice. I like my dark and stout. There is a brewery up across the border into Wisconsin. Huber Bock beer - I like it on tap. Weather - had some 'lovely' storms this last week. The tornado sirens where going off. One sighted close by - but it went to the north of town. Later in Wisconsin it again produced one and warnings where posted. Been cool and wet the last couple of days. Take care - pet the puppies for me (a treat too lol) Take care Spin

@@onedaymoreaboard Minhus Brewery in Monroe, WI has tours. Nice tour with tasting samples also. Monroe is a few miles above the IL / WI line. Lovely small town with court house in the center down town square. I get a nice on tap beer at Baumgardner's. (limburger cheese sandwich also lol). Get in touch - I'll buy you lunch here. I know the owners. 🙂

You said it took 5 hours to get to stone, correct?. So when you got there rob + tammy had to ride their bikes back, right?. This was a win win situation, made life easier for you, rob + tammy, had fun helping you, lots of exersise and some well earnt cash.

That was not my intent but it’s so interesting to hear the connection to A Streetcar Named Desire. How wonderful that you met Tennessee Williams! Our son Alex is an actor, and when he first ventured into that field, one of his mentors gifted him a worn out, well-thumbed copy of Streetcar and it’s one of his prized possessions, and has been on his his bucket list to see a live production. So wonderful to hear that you’re enjoying the channel 😊

We are wondering what your third dogs name is? We see lots of Poppy and Hamish. I always thought your third dog was Julius but I believe now that is the brand name of the harness. We are also wondering if they are floatation harnesses. Thanks! Love your photography and music!

Hello! Our third and oldest westie was Jasper. We had to say a sad goodbye to him in November 2022, aged 15, as he had a very fast growing mouth cancer. You’ll see him a lot in our earlier videos, and also in the outro at the end of all of our videos. I can’t bear to change those clips to update them so he will stay for some time probably! You’re right, the brand of the harness is Julius. They wear them all the time, except at bedtime, and they know it’s treat time when we take them off! The sturdy handles on the back have saved them from quite a few near dunkings, usually as they are getting on and off the boat. We have seperate life jackets that they wear when we are cruising on rivers, which are much deeper and wider than the canals. Lovely to hear that you are enjoying the videos, especially the music. That’s my favourite part of the editing process 😊

There was never any mention of any payment, but we decided very early on in the day that he would be leaving us with a hefty tip in his pocket. He and Tammy were such a massive help that day, and just lovely people to be around 😊

The boats that were tied up at the brewery, it that their home or is it first come first stay? Looked like a great place to stay for a while.

We think that the boats directly outside the Crown Wharf are actually longterm moorings, and the bright green boats just a little further down are a hire boat company. All of the moorings opposite though, on the tow path side, are 48 hour moorings for anyone to use, so it's easy just to moor there and cross the bridge. We wished we could have stayed for longer but we had to get to the boat show in time 😊

Why is the water rusty orange colored?

The local area around the Harecastle Tunnel is rich in iron oxide It’s a natural discolouration due to groundwater containing iron oxide leaching into the canal. It’s far more vivid orange than we imagined it would be, but there’s no smell to it at all. I was thinking it would smell like rust. Thanks for watching 😊

Can't understand why people that already own boats would want to go to Chrick I went about seventeen years ago just to pick up something Liverpool boats had sent down for me.After a look around I decided never to go there again silly expensive to get in and was just like a market nothing special or cheap the prices for food was horrendous and as I am teetotal the beer tents were of no intrest to me.

We love the Crick Boat Show, and even though we are not in the market for a new boat l, we still love having a nosey around all the boats, both new and old. For us it’s also a chance to catch up with boaty friends too. Yes you’re right about the food prices, and I always comment on that in the survey that we are sent after the show. However we have always had the boat with us and prepare our own food back at the boat or get together with friends for a BBQ. Thanks for watching 😊

I know this won't be popular but; if Rob the Lock is so keen to be a lock keeper, why doesn't he become a CRT Lockie, by working independently, he's untrained, uninsured and most boaters won't be able to distinguish him from the official Lockies and if there is a problem or an accident the legal situation is problematic to say the least. He would benefit from the support of CRT and I for one have politely refused his help in the past.

Poppy’s recall when there are other dogs and people around is not great which is why we keep her on the lead a lot. She gets very distracted looking for attention from everyone 😂. When we are in more remote areas, or secure dog run areas, we let her off to run along the tow path and catch her ball, which she loves. Rob and Tammy were definitely a wonderful couple, and made our long day so much side and faster! 😊
