What a beast of a machine. Oh how I love working and building BIG. These machines make the ships engines I machined look like dinky toys, LOL.

I use to watch these things"walk" around the strip mines at Dugger Indiana in the 70s. What a way to spend the afternoon.

I was working at Peabody's Dugger Mine during the 70's. We had only one dragline, but it was the biggest in the world when it was erected in 1968. It was painted yellow and green. If you watched red a gray draglines, they belonged to Amax Coal Co. and my brother and father worked there.

I wish I would've had the time to see these things back then. I remember all three working way out in the distance when going to Freeland the "back way".

Has there ever been mishaps with those moving or "walking"? Like a foot completely stops, or the entire machine tipped?

Looked like it was getting a little too close to the edge of the drop off to suit me. I hope it was solid.

I always wondered why no one made a walking power shovel.
@Frenchy3055
@Frenchy3055 9 лет назад
pmc eightsixeighty Draglines are designed to dig from ground level down and shovels are designed to dig from ground level up. So shovels sit down in the pit and dig up where there isn't a lot of room for maneuvering, especially sideways. So the crawlers on a shovel turn independently from the swing deck and they have large hydraulic jacks built into them to keep the shovel level.

Draglines also could move quite a bit more earth then the power shovels, which mostly were good for very hard rock faces and other tough to get at seams. Of course, bucket wheel excavators pretty much trumped the truly big power shovels, which is why they're now an extinct breed.

The good points of a dragline. They could put the dirt higher and farther away compared to a shovel. And for that reason, they could dig deeper and handle a lot of mud. The bad points of a dragline. You had to build road for a dragline, which resulted in re-handling material that resulted in time not stripping the dirt off the coal. You had to blast the rock better for a dragline. The good points of a shovel, you didn't have to build road for a shovel because it sat on the coal and you didn't have to blast as well. The bad points of a shovel. You couldn't dig as deep compared to a dragline because you couldn't get rid of the dirt and you couldn't handle much mud. As for a wheel excavator. A wheel excavator can't handle rock or mud.
@myselfremade

Additionally the long boom on a dragline is what makes the walking work, the weight causes them to tip forwards. Shovels tend to be taller, so tipping at all could be a big risk

So what happens if it gets stuck ? Say the dirt the shoes sit on sinks deeper than what the lift distance is ?
