In this video essay, I dig into Martin Scorsese's most underrated film, 'The King of Comedy.' Possible DeNiro's most bold performance and a film that is even more fitting in today's culture.

The King of Comedy is my favourite Martin Scorsese film. Such a simple story with such a deep meaning , and seeing Robert de Niro as a Rowan Atkinson sort of character. Goofy movements, and funny moments while having a darker psyche to him at the same time. A real hidden gem.

It makes sense for it to be real. Scorsese always went for those strange than fiction type endings. The ending is exactly how it would happen in American society.
@bassbole

I think it's fantasy, personally. It just has that vibe. It's entirely voiceover, there's no mention of Jerry or any of the other characters, it just feels like it's Rupert inside his own head. He still gets his 15 minutes on stage, but reality after prison is probably not all that pleasant.
@RickyBlickey
@RickyBlickey 4 года назад
Either a fantasy or he gets out of jail has his 15 minutes of fame and since his act was based off self hatred more then real comic genius the industry would prolly spit him up and chew him out to leave him sad and alone
@rickdicker9604
@rickdicker9604 Год назад
Not only does Rupert stretch the bounds of social etiquette to breaking point, he exploits social norms to get his own way. So Jerry's assistant Cathy is patient with Rupert, she's professional, helpful and even kind because she's operating by the rules of social interaction, social norms. But Rupert is never satisfied, he always wants more, he takes advantage of Cathy's good nature, and he's not restrained by social norms at all.

It's interesting looking back at what the critics at the time said, lambasting the movie as mean-spirited and joyless. Yet despite the crappy reviews and poor performance at the box office, it might be Scorsese's most important work. It's one of the most socially prophetic films ever made. Whole damn world's full of Pupkins now.

I think the final scene is reality for two reason, first, Jerry isn’t in it, before he goes on stage, he says how he still considers Jerry a friend, so it would make more sense for him to be in the fantasy, along side Rupert, because Rupert Pipkin always wanted more than fame, second, Ruperts facial expressions, he’s forcing a smile, if it’s his fantasy he should be more elated, but hes putting it on, I think he’s realised being the king of comedy isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, or he’s out of material

@Captain Brandon Horror Film Lover It's a common and valid interpretation of Taxi Driver's third act. Try watching it again with the idea that it's all Travis's fantasy and you'll understand why many people view it that way. Also, the bearded passenger (played by Scorsese) is open to interpretation. He could be real and everything he's saying is true. He could be real and lying or delusional. He could be entirely a delusion in Travis's mind. There are lots of things like this in Taxi Driver.

For some reason, I started to think about Nightcrawler. The parallel between Rupert's need to be famous, feels so similar to Louis Bloom's need to be successful. I could be so wrong about this, since I haven't seen The King of Comedy but that's what I started to think about when I watched this video.
@daviddavis2030
@daviddavis2030 8 лет назад
I was just about to post something similar. ive recently compared king of comedy to both nightcrawler and taxi driver to friends who havent seen it(KoC). I think your absolutely right about their journeys and delusions being similar. to the point that when I first saw nightcrawler, I imagined king of comedy as a very direct and intentional influence. one big difference tho: lou bloom has a huge work ethic. hes willing and expecting to put in huge amounts of work and thought to succeed. Rupert, on the other hand, is ALL about the short cut. even his "practicing" is focused on after getting famous instead working on what he should do to get famous.

God, I see so much of myself in Rupert (and in Michael Scott from The Office), as I have this desire to express myself as an entertainer, but never being talented enough to really pop out, never being able to exceed that a-bit-above-average level I'm stuck at. And I'm glad to hear this is some personality flaw, some morbid desire for acknowledgement, we all possess to some extent. I really think this movie is a masterpiece of psychological portrayal (although exadurated by the script, since this is after all a piece of entertainment). Great analysis, as always, thank you.

Brilliant portrayal indeed. I MUST offer you the opportunity to read an essay called "The Gervais Principle" that is an analysis of The Office and every single character in it that's truly one of the most remarkable things I've ever read. It's fascinating you see (and admit) to the Michael Scott in yourself; self-delusion is one of his strongest traits (and only rarely pierced through in The Office). Just Google that title, it's a long read - you'll probably do it over a few sittings - but I can tell you are someone who will appreciate it. Just read the first few paragraphs, and if you aren't hooked you can always go elsewhere

An analysis of Pupkin's motives, shows that he thinks very little of people, possibly hating them. He has no friends, no close relationships and he lives with his mother, who is never shown. He's motivated to become famous, so he can look down on people, lord over them, have them worship him. He wants to be loved by people, while hating them. The psychology, here, is fascinating.

I sure am glad this guy told me what to think about this movie, wow! I will now share my profound experience I had watching someone else's work! It's crazy how it relates to youtubers and streamers! WOWZA! This is like the Taxi Driver of comedies, see Robert Deniro is playing a similar role, thank god for youtube analysis pointing out obvious parallels! *fun fact about the production of the movie* this movie is so deep!

7:18 the camera doesn’t move away out of embarrassment, it’s to give perspective and highlight that the madness is still going on out there regardless.

Great job !! Yeah , this is easily a Top (pick a #) film - it's as much an extension of Network as Taxi Driver for me . Love it ! Plus The CLASH are in it - what more do ya want ?!

I know, the other awesome detail is old New York, it just doesn't look like that in movies any more. Too polished these days.

Hey Salman, thanks for the kind feedback about the channel. I have seen joker and really liked it, I was surprised how far they took it, especially right at the end when he was accepted by the city as the face of evil.

I'm sure there will be a lot of people checking out King Of Comedy and Taxi Driver after seeing the Joker movie. And that's a good thing cause Taxi Driver is a classic that the newer generations need to see. I first saw it when I was a little kid. Had no idea what was really going on but I liked it.

There is a great podcast called The Canon that I would recommend. The premise is two film critics (Devin Faraci and Amy Nicholson) talk about films and whether or not they deserve to be in the "Canon" of great films to live on forever. The latest episode talks about The King of Comedy and provided some interesting insight into the history and production of the film. I personally like the podcast but would understand if someone found the critics rude (Faraci) or annoying (Nicholson).

First time I saw this movie, I was about 9, and it was 1992. Didn't get the concept back then, and having watched it so many times over the years, it really is very underrated. I know it was filmed just a few months after John Lennon's murder, so I wonder if that was fresh in people's minds when it came out. It's easier to watch this in 2019, where the word "celebrity" has kinda lost its meaning, but I would've liked to see this in theaters in 1983.
