I dunno man the beginning by Dave is absolutely beautiful... The creativity in it blows my mind. Changed the way I thought about the purpose of cymbals.
I've watched this 40 maybe 50 times and still get blown away everytime. Love it when Steve "we're on a mission from" Gadd starts the cowbell rhythm they trade solos over. They all sound incredible!
Just from seeing this video again, you can tell how much more musical steve gadd is with his solos in this video, hes playing a lot less as opposed to his counter parts who are just playing 32nd notes the whole time, he creates fills and licks that actually suit the latin feel that he himself set up in the beginning, and he leaves space so the big bursts of notes sound quicker, we should all strive to play more like gadd, by listening and playing what complements the musical style that we play.
Well said I agree with that too that less is more and its good to let the music breathe and allow for space in the piece and play to what's needed not just play all fast stuff to show off or fill the bar
I can't tell you how many times I watched this fucking amazing performance by three drum gods. One is better than the next. Tears well up. Groove churns inside. Holy fucking shit.
@@voodoovultures3044.... yeah, the good ol' inevitable "bunny wretch" comment...never gets old but stinks a bit already....but easy to spit out no matter what age or IQ...(LORD !!)
@@voodoovultures3044 no he's just not nearly this good and generally overrated. like mentioning him is reserved for comment sections under Whiplash clips.
There is no such thing as the "Best drummer in the world" my hats are off to all these drummers they are all great... studied hard and spent time alone crafting there skills...
syndicateprox I understand what you mean but we can said, these 3 guys are maybe three of the most independance hands and feets of all drummers and for me, that is the best apperance of drumming... to get our hands and feets completly independant (the drummers dream).
@@dcmastermindfirst9418 You mean the Thomas Lang with his DOZENS of drums and cymbals and double-stroke rolls who's trying to imitate Buddy Rich's FIVE DRUMS and single-stroke rolls and utterly failing??
@@tiffsaver Lol. Buddy rich is overrated as fuck boyo. Boy oh boy you've really got no clue do you. Thomas lang has surpassed Rich by leaps and bounds. Which dead and irrelevant drummer are you gonna bring up next huh? Neil Peart? Because he sucks by modern standards too. Thomas lang could outplay both him and Rich which his feet too. Guys like Virgil donati, Thomas lang, Dave weckl and Eric Moore shit all over any drummer you think it good. That's not an opinion. You know nothing. Lol. Clown.
@@tiffsaveryou have 0 clue what you’re talking about. drummers have advanced far beyond buddy, that’s what time does. buddy could not keep up with modern drummers. you need to move on.
to the negative commenters out there, say what you want, but these guys are all really good, and there are allot of other guys out there that are really good also, just appreciate it, and stop trying to act like your opinion is the only one that counts
Bruin Rican A jazz musician dies and goes to Heaven. As he walks toward the pearly gates, he hears the fastest, most amazing drumming he's ever heard. He asks Saint Peter, "Is that Buddy Rich I hear?" Saint Peter says, "No, that's God. He just thinks he's Buddy Rich!"
I like how each carved out a different stylistic niche. They complement each other nicely and show some of the range of percussion as a musical instrument, not just a way to keep a beat.
Weckl is a cold machine gun, Gadd's cowbell is just gives a visceral need to dance, while Colaiuta's ones are like fire beasts whirling through the air.
I agree Buddy Rich was one of the greatest drummers to have ever lived on this earth... but what exactly does that statement even mean? "They don't come anywhere near Buddy Rich." You say that as if music in general is one big competition... it isn't. They are each incredible drummers in their own unique way. Don't compare musicians as if it's a contest.
@ Cleticprinces .....So...Instead of accreditation .... Let's mention someone better so you can justify a negative comment....... well done , Glad we aint friends.
Ask a metal drummer and almost everytime they'll say Gene Krupa, which tell you alot, this guy can't out play my gran-daughter And she mainly plays Sax!!
***** I agree. Only metal drummer that might come close is alex rudinger or luke holland but thats just my opinion. But I think this might be to complex for some people whos only musical experience is a relatives sax to comprehend. What im really wondering though is how the fuck do they do this in suits
I love these guy's ! I'm a drummer too but I just play for church's around town !! They are amazing and this is what keeps me inspired to keep playing is by watching other drummers !! But my favorite drummer is Terry Bozzio with the worlds largest kit !! he is a beast on his set by far...
Not to burst your bubble but there is no shortage of drummers, most of which are unknown, that could do this on their own including these three drummers here.
this is truly spiritual...........at one point of time the beats are occurring in a spiritual fashion...........this much accuracy and dedication is only possible through many years of hardwork......and gaining such a precise timing and rhythm and most important the melody and sweetness of sound........mankind at its best........
I have seen this video so many times I lost count… It brings tears to my eyes!!! I think if I was in the audience I probably would have had a heart attack 😊
This was erupting, and explosive with many surprises at every turn... individual style from seasoned influences, this took me on a rollercoaster ride in a cacophony of well timed chaos, as well as equipment choice to demonstrate their well executed experience...Just when I thought I favored one over the other, the other would surprise me with a different lick, style, or direction. Like to see more vids like this
Oh yes..If you start playing guitar, you can play something that the people around you would at least enjoy listening to, in roughly one or two years..But in one or two years you make only noise, if your instrument is drums!
***** Absolutely I understand what your saying. This style of drumming is very advanced and would be far to technical for any rock, metal, reggae or even intermediate drummer to perform. Dave weckle, Buddy rich etc only some of the greatest drummers ever to live. People think just because someone can perform double bass really fast and drum really fast altogether makes them the best? when reality is there is no title you know. I mean if there was a title for the greatest drummer in the world? then 1) who decides who's the greatest? because every person will have their own opinion you know. 2) How would you decide who's the best? and 3) you would have to know and see every drummer in the world, which changes daily as there are new drummers entering the drumming world every day. I really do marvel at these legends and just hope that one day I can become as great as them :-) you should upload some drum solos? I would most enjoy seeing you play. Thanks for your comment!
Wonderful stuff. I particular like the way Steve Gadd's drums sound like depth charges. But all three are fantastic. I don't care much about who's better or best--this is music, not baseball. I just like hearing great players play, and these guys are great. Thanks so much for posting this.
Are you referring to the title? But there are many KINGS!!! Paying your dues, keeping the music real....yeah.....they are 3 of many. THIS IS DA BOMB!!!
I am impressed with the precise control they have. Now, imagine how much easier it would be for them, if they did not have to wear a tie and jacket! Awesome playing!!!!
This is kind of a funny story. I'm old and cranky, I admit it. I'm 65 and started music lessons at 7, so I guess been doing it about 55 plus years. We had a block party a cpl weeks ago and the neighbors wanted me to play some. I didn't want to screw with an amp and chord so I got this little Martin 0015. It's a smaller guitar but still full sized. I played a little bit and this neighbor about half my age had been running his mouth all night about musicians. He started saying who was the greatest guitar player and who was the best drummer like lots of people do He kept talking about certain musicians and who could do what and who had what pickups all kinds of crap. I was tuning by ear and thought I was flat on my E and it had carried on down. I handed him my guitar and asked him what he thought. He came back with, 'Oh, I don't play.". I kind of laughed a little and took the guitar back. Afterwards it really bothered me the way I kind of made him feel uncomfortable.I should have said something more like this. "What the fuck makes you think that you have the right to judge anybody on something you can't even begin to do yourself? You don't have the right to even have a fucking opinion." That is what I should have said.
All unique- though think Colaiuta appears to have best “fast twitch” leg muscles with his bass drum pedaling. Sort of like how tennis players, sumo wrestlers, high jumpers can do sudden movements within a limited space. Weckl plays great textures on cymbals and has nice sticking patterns. Gadd uses rudiments, doesn’t depend on speed, has his groove sound. Anyone lucky enough to play with the B Rich Band has impossible shoes to fill. BR was a monster on the kit- of which we’ll likely never see again for a long time. Thanks for posting.
What makes Buddy a genius to me was not just his solo ability ( which was unbelievable ) but his playing with and for the big band. He could amazingly play all those complex big band arrrangments from memory and not have any charts to look at. I gather he couldn't read music anyway so to play like he did makes him a drumming genius to my way of thinking.
