15 years later and still enjoying this like it’s not out of style. The ending chords itself was the masterpiece that won’t get out of my head. Love this!
00:00:00 Next, we sing a piece called 'Masterpiece' by the english composer Paul Drayton. As the title suggests, 'Masterpiece' is a modest title for a piece with modest pretensions. It aims to illustrate the entire history of the last four hundred years of western classical music in about nine minutes. Many and varied are the composers mentioned, so if your favourite doesn't appear tough! 00:00:31 Johann Sebastian Bach 00:00:42 Moderato, vivace. But the song has also a meaning. It doesn't just list names of famous composers. And it is also an adoration towards J. S. Bach. Bach's music has influenced the whole of western music evolving thereafter. They are just countless of Rock/Pop Songs who use/d his ideas for example. The "Master piece" describes a circle, a circle of musical evolution. Always coming back to basics to create new ideas. And there still is plenty of stuff to do with music in the future.
@@toompyfloyd4074 The piece doesn't use any music from the actual composers it's referencing. The composer Paul Drayton wrote music in the style of Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn, etc.
@@samuellabrecque880 Actually Paul Drayton also uses elements from the pieces (e.g. for Wagner), but indeed for Mozart it may be totally invented, I'm not sure.
now THIS is a funny insult/troll/jibe, witty while being good natured, non-toxic. Why can't trolls be like this? (not saying you are one, it just came to me while reading your comment)@@neilsailing
Having to the guts to write a piece called masterpiece is one thing. Making it a masterpiece is another. And to then have it performed masterfully... This just can't be overrated.
Ha, yeah that made me laugh and replay it. The whole audience looks a little too coaxed on, so I'm wondering if this was a TV special. In that case, they'd probably have a studio audience "coach".
The way they do Debussy... the harmonies he used... just absolutely spot on. To hear these guys perform in an open concert hall or church like this... I'd be floored.
Composer Paul Drake knew what he was doing. I'm always astonished regarding the "ear" that it takes these singers to "slide" into the Debussy section from where they had been. Wow ... just WOW!
*auditions for the King's Singers* "I'm afraid you didn't make it into the ranks" "But how? I have received classical training and you even said I didn't miss a single note!" "Well yes, yes, that's nice and all but I'm afraid we can't have any members whose faces don't look funny when they're holding a long note".
Think this is (in my opinion) the best line up of King's Singers...the quality of each of these singers is just magnificent when blended together and their musical humour is second to none x
Brilliant singing. And also you have got to love the reaction of the man in the bottom right corner at 12:31, which almost was my reaction of all this.
Yeah, he's hilarious. The whole audience looks a little too coaxed on, so I'm wondering if this was a TV special. In that case, they'd probably have a studio audience "coach".
The blend and balance at 2:12 between Bass and Bari 2 on that perfect 5th is absolutely beautiful, just as the bass slightly crescendos as the the chord locks providing that perfect foundation with his dynamic ever so slightly above the rest of the group. Stephen Connolly is incredible!
I think these 5 are the best of the Kings. They all sound well together, always look like they're having good fun and you can just tell they're all very close. I'm sad that 3 of them are no longer in the lineup
Check out the Tiny Desk Concert they did for NPR that was published three days ago! Their rendition of Horizons brings me to tears. That was where I first heard them and I'm determined to hear everything they've done. Spectacular stuff!
Plenty of composers finished in different keys to the ones they started in, but that's not really what I meant. The thing I was impressed with is that they are singing a capella and manage not to drift off-key. When you're singing unaccompanied it's very difficult to hold absolute pitch

Why is it that the world never remembers the name of Johann Gambolputty de von Ausfern- schplenden- schlitter- crasscrenbon- fried- digger- dingle- dangle- dongle- dungle- burstein- von- knacker- thrasher- apple- banger- horowitz- ticolensic- grander- knotty- spelltinkle- grandlich- grumblemeyer- spelterwasser- kurstlich- himbleeisen- bahnwagen- gutenabend- bitte- ein- nürnburger- bratwustle- gerspurten- mitz- weimache- luber- hundsfut- gumberaber- shönedanker- kalbsfleisch- mittler- aucher von Hautkopft of Ulm in these sorts of tributes?
+Hallonboat It is truly a shame. I, for one, am a big fan of Johann Gambolputty de von Ausfern- schplenden- schlitter- crasscrenbon- fried- digger- dingle- dangle- dongle- dungle- burstein- von- knacker- thrasher- apple- banger- horowitz- ticolensic- grander- knotty- spelltinkle- grandlich- grumblemeyer- spelterwasser- kurstlich- himbleeisen- bahnwagen- gutenabend- bitte- ein- nürnburger- bratwustle- gerspurten- mitz- weimache- luber- hundsfut- gumberaber- shönedanker- kalbsfleisch- mittler- aucher von Hautkopft of Ulm.
Y'know, that name is even funnier when you can speak German and actually understand what the words mean. For example there is a part that says "Good evening, a Nurn-burger, please" XD
I always think about what it must have been like to come into the age where you were finally able to dub this blissfulness to a record and listen to it at home, instead of paying top coin to enjoy it live~ we take so much for granted nowadays.☝☺
Great performance! This is real singing, and beyond! In the last few seconds there's a gentleman in the audience who simply couldn't be more enthusiastic. That's a big compliment for the King's Singers!
This is so awesome!!!!! They capture each composer's style perfectly..... such talent. I have lost track of how many times I have listened to this......
Guy's face in the bottom right corner at the end the song. I'm seriously making that face. That was.. I can't find the words, I'm so happy. Beautiful and very well done.
The cool thing about this song is that I have no idea who William Byrd is, and this just made me want to look up his music. Also, I just think this is one of the most talented things I’ve ever seen in my life.
This is without a doubt one of the most amazing things I've ever listened to!! Absolutely delightful! What I love even more is how the character of each composer and their music is captured in the piece!
This is the singersgroup i know of, and the best performers. Such great register and precision is amazing. It's truly sad that something this great has so few viewers.. This is true music!
