I think it’s definitely a genuine comment and she definitely knows what’s going on behind the scenes. My guess is that it will be out fall 2023 with a giant marketing schedule that they are planning. I also think he’s split what was originally just book 3 into 2 books.
Rothfuss will deliver when he's ready. DoS will surely baffle us. What Mercedes did is very unprofessional. I'd not believe anything unless it comes from patrick himself bcuz its very difficult to kill time when you expect the book to be released soon. Till then will be re-reading books 1 & 2😄
Idk but with rothfuss incorporating feedback from the editor and stuff it could still be a while. Still why would she lie? I'm very excited. Hope I can finish all of Robin hobb and the expanse till doors of stone tho.
Mercedes Lackey. Lackey is a term that comes from a splinter of the Lackless family. Lack-Key, as in she doesn't have a key because there is no key because it's the lockless box. The Lockless Box contains the final draft of The Doors of Stone. WAKE UP PEOPLE! IT'S BEEN STARING US RIGHT IN THE FACE!
Believe it when I see it, I gave up caring about this long ago. I'll be more than happy to read it when (if) it does get released, but I'm not getting my hopes up any time soon
I’ve never understood why people get so upset with Rothfuss (aside from this recent baffling charity thing, that’s pretty fucked up) about the book taking so long. I’ve got more to read than I have time for as it is and the first two books not only stand up to multiple readings, but might actually require them which is not something I say often about fantasy novels.
Same. I don’t feel the level of claim to it I’ve seen with other fans. I want to read it and ideally before the elder scrolls 6 releases, but if I don’t I don’t. The Name of the Wind is still my favorite book and holds a special place for being my introduction fantasy novels coming off of Percy Jackson at the time (and if it wasn’t for that special place, the Slow regard of silent things would be my favorite book).
@@ohthreefiftyone Same reason gamers get upset when a game gets delayed or is announced 10 years before release or a sequel takes forever. People want the things they like immediately. Of course the same people endlessly insult the creators for releasing something too soon and in an unfinished state. To a degree I get where they’re coming from and I think its a marketing issue. Managing expectations and announcing something at the right time is important. For example, Apple is really good at this. They really don’t overhype the next iPhone. Its pretty universally known, it’ll be basically the same as last year’s model with some slight improvements, maybe a port taken out, and a new feature that doesn’t actually matter. And it works. They’re just good at spinning that information and making people still want one. They’re also announced and released around the same time every year.
@@thomasc1270 mhmmm true, but I think brandon could potentially adapt his writing to match rothfuss writing style, he did that just that in the wheel of time books he wrote.
I remember asking the employee of the book store that i want a complete story to read. And he said you are lucky because at August the third book will release.. it was August of 2018.
@@XRISTIANA4251 I had a similar experience….only it was 2013. When I went back to that bookstore asking for a completed series and they recommended the ‘Lightbringer’ series by Brent Weeks, at that point lightbringer was still supposed to be a trilogy (but it turned into 5 books) so I felt like I was burnt twice by the same bookstore! At least Brent Weeks got around to finishing it though
I was introduced to the Kingkiller Chronicles 2 months ago by an acquaintance of mine. While reading them, I thought it was a gift, a fantastic series to have been enthralled in… only to discover with finishing The Wise Man’s Fear that he has condemned me to the asylum of waiting for the 3rd book to release. I don’t know how you all have waited over a decade 😩.
A friend who is a doctor or a doctor who is a friend? or a Doctor like The Doctor, but a specific actor who has played them. Was the book a prescription?
@@dwschouten Lol I see what you’re getting at, although that may be nice. I work part-time at a hospital right now as I am working on getting more flight hours, and one of the Hospitalists here has become a friend of mine with whom I can talk about books. He recommended Name of the Wind and Kvothe’s subsequent adventures, and I recommended Will Wight’s Cradle series.
@@jeepersitsmeepers Actually what I was getting at was how weird it was to mention that the person who recommended you the book was a doctor, even though it had no relevance to the anecdote. its like when somebody says, "this asian dude cut me off in traffic," as opposed to "this dude cut me off in traffic;" except yours is not problematic or really bad in anyway.
@@dwschouten Hmm, I see your point. Honestly, I guess the biggest reason I pointed it out is because, subconsciously, Christian and I are probably much more akin to loose acquaintances, and all I really know much about him other than he is a medical doctor and reads books similar to my fancies. In any case, thinking about it, it would come off as needlessly specific.
We've definitely had a lot of false alarms, every year there seems to be a few lazy articles claiming to have a release date. Though this is the first time another popular author who shares his editor and publishing house has given any info, so I feel a little more optimistic about this one
''I want you to take this information with a pinch of salt...'' - Meanwhile me, getting ready for work, hyped as f*ck, daydreaming about which kind of coffee I'll be having, which spot of the house I'll be sitting, which blanket I'll use, picturing myself with the book in my hands, smiling, being back at the Inn, having told the world I'm going to dissappear for 2 days. Ahh. No biggie.
We've all had our own share of disappointment with this back-and-forth rumor with Doors of Stone. Heck, I've shared my complaint myself on how unprofessional it is for Rothfuss to not deliver on his promise (which involves people paying already, even if it's for charity) regarding a chapter on Doors of Stone and more. As you said, if scheduling with the audio whatever is the problem, he SHOULD release a chapter on his blog or somewhere first. As of now, it just looks like he hasn't even finished a single chapter in 11 years since The Wise Man's Fear. He also said last year that The Wise Man's Fear 10th anniversary will be released this year (making it the 11th anniversary) and there's no sign of that happening. So it is HARD to believe anything regarding Doors of Stone. However, Mercedes Lackey saying that it is with the editor may have more truth than the usual lies and rumors we faced. As usual, though, it might be better to take EVERYTHING regarding Doors of Stone with a grain of salt until DAW Books (not Rothfuss, it has to be the publisher or his editor) themselves announce the release date. I love Kingkiller Chronicle. So much. I'm sure when Doors of Stone come out, we will all be elated. But until then, yeah, it's better to not hold our breath on it. :)
Not sure I will be elated. I will probably read it but at this point it is just to finish a story and not over excitement. The second book was not very interesting to me in terms of character development and lack thereof. It would take a lot of work from Rothfuss to make up for the lack and finish the series on a high. (Not that the series isn't enjoyable, I just found the 2nd book to be much lower in quality than the first)
@@karllarson5162 I agree this novel has taken so long that anything other than amazing will just seem like a let down. It’s been built up so much it can’t live up to expectations
@@karllarson5162 I feel the same. I was thrilled with the series 10 years ago when I first read it, and I recommended it to everyone. These days I can't be bothered to care. I'm a different person now than I was 10 years ago. So is Rothfuss. Even if he does finish Doors of Stone, it's going to feel like it was written by a different person and belongs to a different series. It's going to be exactly like when a long dead film franchise is revived for a new sequel decades later. They always feel off and fail to capture the spirit of the originals.
Wish I will live long enough for Sanderson to be given the project over. He'll wrap it up in a couple of months, probably while finishing ASOIAF and another stormlight book. And I get to read it before I kick the bucket.
I believe there are very few things about this that Mercedes Lackey "just doesn't understand". I, for one, am still excited about the possible release of this book. Of course it will NOT live up to it's hype, it can't. That's ok also.
I can confirm that there is no release date for book 3. You see, in order for a release date to exist, first, book 3 must exist. The existence of book 3 is dependent on Patrick actually writing the book. He hasn't.
I am glad about my mindset with regards to the book right now. I think I went through all of the grief stages with it, and now I just accept that it is not something I should expect, but one day I will be very happy to listen to the audiobook of it. Don't even care if it is going to happen this year, next year or 10 years down the line. (god I hope it is not 10 years down the line.)
She posted another comment on the Quora thread a few days ago with a link to The Slow Regard of Silent Things so she must have gotten confused about what book 3 was.
He seems like a perfectionist. And I mean that in the debilitating sense. The whole thing with the voice actors schedules not lining up could have been foreseen way before he committed to doing that. He didn’t even have to do that! People would have been happy with a published chapter. Or just a few voice actors. It’s not too late to drop a voice actor that schedule doesn’t line up. Literally no one would even know or care.
Damn it’s been so long, it would be amazing to get my hands on book 3. I remember I found your channel YEARS ago because of the KKC haha. One day my friend… one day…
Mercedes LACKEY?? That is one of the families that came from the Lackless line according to Caudicus. Therefore she's most likely a distant relative of Kvothe and therefore this rumor is 100% confirmed.
I think my heart skipped a beat when I saw the title. I'm keeping my expectations low. Until Pat says something about a release I'm not believing anything. But we can hope. The whole fundraiser stretch goal has definitely been salt in the already grim wound , if there is no real release date news it'd be nice for an update on the chapter at least because that has left a sour taste in a ton of people's mouths
Lol ,l actually read it like real quick ,then read it twice before l fully appreciated what the title of this video implied ,l was like "mhm? No way....way?"
I keep teetering between wondering if the delay is because Patrick has too much respect for his fans to release a rubbish piece of work OR if he has no respect for his fans and refines the book (if that's really the case) for himself - peons be damned
Plus Patrick has already lied to people last year when he tried to back out of promise about charity then said he'll release it in February and then said it was taking time due to the voice and other things, what a weezly Little liar.
Before any of read the first word of the first page of this store we love, we read his book dedication. “And to my father, who taught me if I’m going to do something, I should take my time and do it right” I love this story so much, listening to the audiobook for the upteenth time right now! And I’m hoping for a 10yr anniversary edition of a Wise Man’s Fear. We’ll get it when we get it, good things are to come enjoy the now.
I've actually put off reading The Name of the Wind because nothing has been mentioned....I don't want to be stuck in the place that everyone else is. It's the same feeling I have with ever starting the Game of Thrones books, although there's a lot more of those done.... I have the Wheel of Time and Sanderson's Stormlight Archive to get to still...so I can wait.
I need an update. I need lore or something, it just keeps hitting me that I want more of this world randomly like I'll be washing my hands and wonder about it or walking my dogs and wonder about it and I simply have not had that with any book series in my life.
I've given up hope. That's how I feel about it. Also, if Pat's not careful, he's gonna be sued for that fundraiser and not delivering on his promises to the THOUSANDS of people that donated. which will even further delay or kill book three entirely. Either way, Kvothe gets an end to his life he didn't deserve. Just like he didn't deserve to have everything good stripped from his life in the beginning. I don't know what's more tragic, Kvothe's story, or the fact it can't be finished.
With all the respect, but his audience does nothing but asking him about the 3rd book, and who are we to request something from him? I think hes doing it to himself, if not, it would already be released
I don't believe anything regarding book 3. I'll believe it when I hold book 3 in my hands. Patrick's constant lying is just exhausting at this point. He doesn't owe us book 3 but he also doesn't have to be a dick to the fan base. I no longer consider myself a fan of his. I'm a fan of the books.
I know folks say authors don't owe books, but if it's a series, I wholeheartedly believe they need to finish it. We bought every book with the understanding that we would get to finish the story. It's an unspoken understanding between author and reader.
@@FunkyFolksNC I 100% agree, had I known I would have been waiting this long I wouldn’t have bothered reading it, at least until the series was finished.
I love the first two books so much, and I am SO FUCKING SICK of Rothfuss' entitlement at this point. You are not troubled, Pat, you are lazy and an attention whore. Finish the fucking book, and reclaim your integrity.
@@FunkyFolksNC They do owe books. They ask people to invest their time into reading a series encouraging the belief that more is to come. To fail to deliver and instead string fans along for years, whilst taking on other projects instead etc., is duplicitous and taking advantage of people. Many people would not buy a book if there was a sticker on the front saying "The final book will never be written".
She probably shouldn't have said anything. He said he'd announce stuff so her hinting anything really just puts him and the editor at odds for not being more confidential if true. Its a testament to his good work that his fans are so eager. Have faith and give the time needed
It is my sincere hope that the third book lives up to the hype and just shuts the haters up, and that Rothfus does some kind gesture to atone for not doing the chaopter reading for all the fans that donated. BUT that seems unlikely. Its like whenever GRRM releases Winds, there is so much hype coupled with time that people are going to be dissapointed. Sucks becasue they both seem like really sweet guys that are crumbling under the wieght of their own success (internally).
Well I don't think the two are actually comparable. I think that a lot of the anger at Rothfuss comes from him stating up front the books were done, and then being rude to people that were upset that he lied. I think that is justifiable. Whereas George is just a turtle, and I give him more slack. That being said, I think in the grand scheme of life, if the third book is good, people who read the books into the future will enjoy it without the drama and the hate will go away, but for me the series is ruined, and that sucks because there was a time that I enjoyed it.
Too late for that.. a lot of people or at least RU-vid reviewers seem to hate the second book because, I'm guessing the reason is, Kvothe dared to go away from the University. They don't seem to like anything about Kvothe exploring the world.
@@JacquesduPlessis11 that's fair, but I also understand the perspective that Pat's rudeness to fans can be attributed to him not dealing with fame and his mental health in the best way.
@@JacquesduPlessis11 I'm still hyped for the next books from Martin and Rothfuss. I give George more slack because he seems to be doing a lot of other projects. House of the Dragon just came out, plus he's released two companion books since Dance with Dragons came out. Also the 2nd book, Fire and Blood is pretty big and although it is not in the timeline of the current story, it shows that Martin has not been idle. Behind the scenes, it seems likely that the world and lore has undergone some massive growth over these 11 years. I expect that to pay huge dividends in terms of pure depth and world building that will be in the remaining books in the mainline series. I can't wait.
It is exciting news from a nice source! I have never been as angsty about getting the book as others, but I will be super excited when the book gets here/there
I was suspicious about the context for this quote, so I tracked it down on Quora, and it looks like she was mistaken, and was actually referring to The Slow Regard of Silent Things. (She posted a link to its Amazon listing.) Disappointing, and I had thought better of Mercedes Lackey.
Does anyone feel like he’s losing fans because of the length it’s taken him to publish this third book? I can’t tell you how much I loved the first two books, probably my two favorite books! However, I believe some may forget about these books or even get upset and just walk away from these books because of the time gap!
I can guarantee it with 100%, i know of 6 people who were as desperate about rothfuss as myself.. today they probably wont even read the book on release :/
Sadly, not true. Mercedes Lackey posted a link to the Slow Regard of Silent Things as a reply to her original comment yesterday, which is technically the "third book" in the series. The wait continues.
RU-vid won't let me link the source, but you can find it in the comments of a post titled "I really hope this info is reliable" on the KingkillerChronicle subreddit.
"Mental health issues" can be absolutely crushing, tormenting, anguishing and debilitating. People who have never suffered such have no common frame of reference to understand what it is like.
I have mental health issues as well as autism. You still have to take responsibility for your actions. I am totally ok with him taking way longer than promised to come out with book 3. But I think the final straw for some people is the fact that he raised money for charity for a sample chapter and never delivered. Now, it's mental health issues prevented him from writing the chapter that is understandable... The problem is he never came out and told people why the chapter never came about . He at least needs to come forward and say I'm sorry it just took too long and it's not complete. That's the issues for many people at this point. I can understand the book taking a long time in general,he can't help that.
@@justinhight8880 I agree with all of what you said here, thank you. We all need to take responsibility for our actions regardless of any personal challenges or shortcomings we may continually struggle with. I've got major depressive disorder and also have rage issues. Doesn't mean it's okay for me to be mean to the people around me. Regarding my comment above, I was thinking more about how long it has been taking and not about the charity promise... also just, you know, compassion.
@@tanakeilidh384 yeah,I totally agree. Him taking a long time unfortunately can not be helped and his mental health is more important. I totally know what you mean about rage issues. It can be worse on men because we are just seen as dangerous. Especially since I'm a big bodybuilder. I have to explain the difference between macho behavior and mental health. But yeah,I only fault Patrick for not at least saying " hey this is why I didn't get the chapter out" I can't fought him for taking a long time to write the book though. But I hope it all works out soon
Nah, even if we had an official release date from the publishers and Rothfuss and literally everyone, I'd STILL expect them to delay the release by at least a couple months
That's some straight up bullshit, isn't it? I have ADHD, so I can empathize with him having trouble finishing the book itself. But to make a promise like that and then come up with excuse after excuse as to why you can't even release a single chapter?? A slap in the face to everyone who donated hoping to get a taste of the book in return.
Lackey followed up with a link, saying she was "referring to this". The link is to an audiobook of The Slow Regard of Silent Things released in 2014. I'm pretty sure Lackey is a bit confused and has no news for fans of Rothfuss.
Does anyone have an update on this? I have a good 23 hours left to finish The Wise Mans Fear. I'm looking forward to continuing the story. Is it realistic to say it will release no later than 2025, or am I dreaming?
@@DarkCreed Thanks, I actually started another series to scratch that fantasy itch, It's called, "The Way of King's" I'm only a few hours in but I am hooked. I think you should read/listen to it.
@@JakeGreen86 Thanks man, I'll prob hold off for now. I'm starting the way of kings series. I'd check it out. I found this series when I was in the review section of the wise mans fear in good reads. It got a 4.66 on good reads, which is exceptional considering good reads is the toughest book critic out there.
People just need to stop giving this man your money until he releases the third book. It's just a shame that he strings along the public this way. Twelve years is an impossibly long time to wait.
Why hasn't this blown up yet? I've googled for other sources, but this story isn't covered anywhere else (as far as I could find). Thanks for the update, though.
If the third book ever gets released I think I'm going to feel like the wife at the end of Castaway (the following I guess is a spoiler for those who haven't seen that 22 year old constantly meme'd film). For many many years I desperately hoped and prayed for this books release, but as some one who bought and read the wise man's fear on its release day in 2011, some where along the way of these past 11 years I came to accept that the series was dead. I mourned it, and slowly, over the years, moved on from it. I effectively held a ceremonial burial for it despite not having a body for it. As such, should it ever show up... I can't see myself being excited for it. I will still be glad that it came to exist, but any desire I had to read it I long ago left behind. I had to in order to not have that same desire twist into resentment or frustration. If it is released, will I read the story some day... maybe, I honestly don't know. But at the least this news fills me with no joy, just a sense of melancholy and indifference. I wish I could care, but Rothfuss did not leave that option to me.
This is how a writer loses his fans. I suspect that there has been so much backlash from 'fans' that the publishers believe that even if PR releases the 3rd book that there aren't enough fans who would buy it.
I suddenly felt that I have to write "Patrick Rothfuss" on YT and then this video came out! I know I shouldn't have any expectations but, I'm already excited!
Do people really think the book is finished when he failed to release the promised chapter half a year ago or even provide any update regarding its status? Book 3 is not coming anytime soon, and by soon i mean the next 5 years.
PLEASE PLEASE do an in-depth recap for Wise Man's Fear. Just like the one you did for Name of the Wind. I haven't read it in years and need a refresh!!
Ok. As a writer, I needed to see this video and those clips of his writing experience. Because I almost did the same thing. But, it sounds like that’s not the way to go. Thank you 😊
The third book has been released. It waits inside the cypher Rothfuss has hidden in books one and two. An unbelievable and brilliant read! Begin with Veritas.
If it had a release date then it would surely be up for pre order? Amazon Uk just has a listing from 2017 saying temporarily out of stock. So I'm not inclined to believe it.
I have not read any of his books because he had not written book 3 and it had been a long time since book 2. I wasn't gonna fall into that trap again. Is book 3 supposed to be the final book?
Getting ready to slowly read book 1 and book 2 all over again as soon as l hear when it's dropping....l feel like whenever it comes out if l don't slow myself and put a leash on my over excitement l'll read it and suffer major widthrawal waiting for the next book ....lm sure at this point it's canon there'll be another?
I said in another video about a week ago that I noticed a slight shift in his attitude and demeanor about it. I took that as he was making good progress. I think it's at least plausible it's finished.
I’m glad you covered this! I have been seeing that post go around for the past few days/week and was wondering about the professionalism of the post wether it is correct or not, but I don’t know anything about publishing so I wasn’t sure.
I was pretty sad when I took the time to read through the ML works and getting towards the end of the series I kept noticing things that were wrong or jarring and now I'm far enough from that where I can't even say what it was that put me off them, but I won't go back to re-read them again now. PR's books have a few jarring things in them to me too, but I will likely reread them again if he ever puts out DoS. Until then, like everyone else, I'm trying to be patient and find other things to read. Wish I could...
I wonder if she might have heard about a release date for the 10th anniversary edition of A Wise Man’s Fear and not The Doors of Stone. Either way, I’ll temper my expectations until there’s more concrete news. Definitely a credible source though!
Didn’t he also promise us to release the first chapter no later then February 2023 if this goal for a charity was met? Which it was but he still hasn’t released that chapter. I’ve given up on him a long time ago. He’s not an author. He’s a streamer that happed to release 2 books
My marketing guess is that he is gonna release the chapter like he promised and with that a announcement of the release date of book 3. Hoop it is soon tho :p
I read book 1 like, 6 years ago and LOVED IT COMPLETELY. For whatever reason I never went out and read the second one. I got into teaching and sometimes it’s just hard to find time to sit and read. Luckily, I JUST heard book 2 this past June-July via audible. I must say, it made it an easier endeavor since I could listen ofer my commute, while cleaning etc. but I hope book 3 comes out soon (selfishly), that way I don’t have to wait so long.
I remember picking up Book 1 in Barnes and Noble back in 08, young and naive, entranced by the excerpt on the inside of the dust jacket not even knowing it was a trilogy. Sometimes, I wish I never had. Have you heard of our lord and savior, Brandon Sanderson?
I agree about posting the chapter before the audio version is released. If any of the voice actors he's talking about are from Critical Role (which I would guess is so), then it's no wonder scheduling has been difficult with them. I'm trying to give the dude a break with this one. Should he honor the promise and release the chapter? Yeah. But I don't think the reason he isn't releasing it is because it's not ready.
Putting on marketing conspiracy hat... if your author has been kind of burned announcing release dates recently, maybe you have another well-known author make the unofficial announcement for them, and that primes the audience for the official announcement later on. Lackey has been at this too long to just randomly gossip about other authors' books that are in the edit cycle... I would hope!
I don’t think it’ll be released for a while. But if it is soon I will be waiting for the audible version. Hopefully they’ll be released at the same time. But my hopes are very slow tbh
George RR Martin broke me years ago on waiting and hoping for a book release. Now I just enjoy your theories and move on the the next author or go back to other favorite series
