The Kings Of France Part 3 of 6 - The Capetians: The Capetians were a princely dynasty of Frankish origin who became the rulers of France in 987 when Hugo Capet was appointed king. His descendants ruled France without interruption until 1792, with the direct branch of the Capetians ruling until 1328, then the younger branches of the Valois until 1589 and the Bourbons until the French Revolution. The Bourbons regained the throne from 1814 to 1848 with an interruption during the Hundred Days, when Napoleon returned to France after 11 months of Exile. Louis-Philippe from the fourth Capetian house of Orléans is the last sovereign of the Capetian dynasty in France. The Capetians traditionally form the third dynasty of kings of France after the Merovingians and Carolingians and the Capetian dynasty was the most influential dynasty in Europe during the Middle Ages.

The constancy of the Capetian line was truly remarkable - 13 generations of monarchs handing the crown from father to son over a period of three and a half centuries. It makes one wonder how different medieval French history would have been if there had been a more troubled line of succession, as happened in England, for example, when kings like Edward the Confessor and Henry I died without legitimate male heirs.

Yeah, England was a right mess in comparison 😂 Not having strictly-defined rules for succession like Salic Law definitely contributed- the Plantagenets lasted over 300 years, but not without a LOT of conflict, to put it mildly.

Yes, on that matter, the country was lucky : each time a branch ended, there was a male heir in a cadet branch of the family tree : Philippe VI, then Louis XII, then Francis I, then Henri IV. They were all from the Capet family. The only very tough situation came when Henri III died, because his successor at this moment was Henri de Navarre (Henri IV), a Protestant. A long civil war, ended by Henri's conversion to Catholicism.

@@heliedecastanet1882 And the fourth king Henri was only related to the third in the 22nd degree! Navarre's descent originated from Louis IX, who had reigned over three centuries earlier. Talk about distant cousins. o:

@@beth7935Salic law of inheritance was a political fiction created by Philip V to disown his niece Joan II of Navarre. There was no law against female succession up to that point and many county and duchy were inherited by females or through female lines

Me too!! I commented about it on a video I saw about Isabella of France recently, cos it wasn't mentioned- it seems like it's often left out; I didn't hear about it for ages, & I was very surprised when I did. It's a very interesting story, but obviously pretty sad & horrible too.

Hello James ! You spelled it perfectly 😉 If you are interested on this affair and scandal, have you ever read "The Accursed Kings" (Les Rois Maudits) by Michel Druon ? There are six novels. The first two deal with this story. The novels were translated into English long ago 🙂 Maybe you can find them !

Dear Madam, thank you very much for the impressive work you are doing 🙂 If I may, I'd like to put the stress on something that most of the people either don't know, or forget : Edward III was not the closest heir to the French crown through women (in his case, Isabelle de France) 🙂 Before him, there was Charles de Navarre, grandson of Louis X through his mother. And even before him, coming first to the claim, there was Philippe de Bourgogne, grandson of Philippe V through his mother Jeanne de France, duchesse de Bourgogne and Philippe V's daughter (Philippe V was THE LAST direct Capetian with issue). So you see, Edward came only third. He knew it. And so much so that he paid homage to Philippe VI and that the English Parliament stated that Edward had no right over the French crown (1329, if I remember well). The claim came long after the war had started, as a political strategy. But this had nothing to do with Edward's right 🙂 I know it is too late now for a change in your video, but knowing your passion for History, I thought you would be pleased to learn that 🙂 And if ever you have the possibility to change it, well, you will teach to your audience something that is rarely known 😉 Thanks again, and have a good day !

I love your videos. I would suggest to always include a family tree as it helps to understand the material. I have traced my ancestors back to Arduin II "the Bald" d´Auriate, marquis of Turin who was the grandson of Hardouin, marquis of Neustria. His wife was Emilia di Mosezzo who was granddaughter of Matfrède, Comte di Mosezzon et Lomello (di Lodi e Milano), I and T. van Orléans-Eifelgau (van Neuchâtel). Do you have further information of any connection to the royal families? Thank you for your help!

I really get your point, but I aim to release one video per week, and with my actual job, that's not feasible I'm afraid. A family tree is a lot of work to make... lay out wise. But I'll give it some thoughr because I do understand where you're coming from. Maybe I can simplify it in some way. I have to think about it.

Great Job! Thanks. I always wondered why French peeps don't study their own medieval history. In England and America we crave history. IMO French really do not know history and very little of their own history is taught in their schools. Authors of French historical books are few and far between. Why is this?....Yet we do hear much on the Revolution.

I lived in France when I was a student, so this is my observation, the French educational agenda is that the monarchy was inherently bad and the glory in France was after the revolution to the present day. The reality is the opposite. There was never a monarch in France who was as despotic as Napoleon, who still to this day is well loved in many areas of France. While there were many notable artists and writers in the 19th century, they built on a frame work established by the monarchy. When I look at present day France and their leaders, a monarch wouldn't be a worse option.

@@mtngrl5859 Thanks! So in a way they just ignore history and as a result great historical figures like King Louis ix get lost in the unwanted history of the pre-Napoleonic era. Still makes little sense to me. What about the 15th Cen with the end of the 100 years war? Surely a great time for the French as they finally pushed the occupying English army out of the country. & How is Jeanne d'Arc (Joan Of Arc) viewed present day?
