Song by Richard Berry. His lyrics: [Chorus] Louie, Louie Me gotta go Louie, Louie Me gotta go [Verse 1] Fine little girl she wait for me Me catch the ship for cross the sea I sail the ship all alone I never think I make it home [Chorus] Louie, Louie Well, me gotta go Louie, Louie Me gotta go [Verse 2] Three nights and days me sail the sea Me think of girl, oh constantly On the ship I dream she there I smell the rose in her hair [Chorus] Louie, Louie Me gotta go Well, Louie, Louie Me gotta go [Verse 3] Me see Jamaica moon above It won't be long, me see me love Me take her in my arms and then I tell her I-I never leave again [Chorus] Louie, Louie Well, me gotta go Louie, Louie Me gotta go [Outro] I say, me gotta go Oh yes, me gotta go Well, me gotta go

In 1964/65 David and I rented a small house next to the 1st two highrise girls' dorms at the Univ. of Arizona. We had a fabulous sound system. Almost every Sat. night we had a party. Louie Louie plus the Beatles Twist and Shout were played a lot. The campus police would stop every Sat. and ask us to turn the volume down and not ask to see our IDs' for the Booz. What a great party school!

A simple yet perfect masterpiece in rock and roll music history! So sad to learn of Jack Ely's passing. From what I read Richard Berry was the original artist who wrote and performed this song. But it was Ely who noticed how much people liked dancing to it and had the foresight to do a cover and the rest is history. Lynne Easton insisted on taking over the lead vocals and Ely left in protest. When the song began to rise on the charts Ely tried to rejoin but Easton wouldn't allow it. Jack Ely deserved so much more recognition and any rewards that were to come from it. This is a precious performance... Mike Mitchell, too.

The so-called “lead singer” in this is Lynn Easton, the original drummer. He’s actually lip-syncing to Jack Ely’s original vocals. I knew him when he was married to one of my best friends. Lynn was a number-one jerk, who insisted on taking over the lead singer spot, because his Mommy owned the rights to the band name. Jack Ely (R.I.P.), was a great guy, who left the band due to Easton’s prima donna and bullying takeover. The reason the words were so garbled was because Jack had braces on his teeth, which were fairly new (he was around 16 or so), and the braces were hurting his mouth and lips, making it hard to pronounce the words as he sang.
@johnnybravo3839
@johnnybravo3839 3 года назад
Hey...just thought I would pass along this interview with Jack Ely who told the interviewer that the words were garbled NOT because of his braces but because the microphone was hung from the ceiling over his head and he had to throw his head back to sing in the direction of the mic...though this mis-information about his braces causing the trouble is even on the Wikipedia page. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gMdw3sK-1Zc.html

The singer on the video was not the singer on the record. He is just mouthing the words. The video frontman was the drummer on the record and his mother owned the band. When the song Louie-Louie became a hit she kicked the singer off the band and made her son the frontman, so he got all the credit, and the real singer is forgotten. The Kingsmen version is a direct copy of a record by Rockin Robin Roberts...on RU-vid. Both the Kingsmen and RRR were local bands in the Seattle, Washington area in the 1960s. see wikipedia.

They actually recorded this in one try, and in a bit of a hurry. The microphone that they used was up high in the air and the lead singer, I believe it was J. Ely, had trouble stretching his neck up high enough to record on it. That was ONR of the reasons his vocals were hard to understand. During this recording, he came in too early on the final verse. But they decided to just keep it that way. Great song.

@@dariowiter3078 Correct. That is actually Lynn Easton. I think because this TV clip circulates so much that people think that the lead singer was Jack Ely (a lot of obituaries actually showed Easton's picture instead of him when he died). He had already been out of the band by 1963, and this clip is from 1965.

Fun fact: The whole naughty lyrics supposedly sung by the late, great Jack Ely were beautifully explained by the man himself in an interview for the now out of print BEHIND THE HITS book. Turns out, two factors helped create the "controversy"....braces and a studio microphone! Apparently, Mr. Ely was wearing braces the day of that fateful recording. The main mike in the studio was perched at an unreasonable height for any lead singer. The technicians didn't bother readjusting the mike and left it so high that Jack essentially sang into the mike with his head tilted up at a 45' angle. You try singing with your head tilted, neck and vocal chords stretched, braces covering your teeth, AND a microphone hanging nearly a foot higher than you! Now go listen to the cut with that image of the lead singer, and you'll understand why the lyrics sound slurred and distorted! 🇵🇷🇺🇸🤣

That's interesting that Jack said that his braces were part of the problem. In this interview he said it was the microphone placement and not the braces that was the issue.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gMdw3sK-1Zc.html

Sweden Norway and The Bahamas and knowing the lyrics of Louie Louie by the Kingsmen. Rest in peace, Mum. Well - all forebears who are no longer here taught us forbearance.And Ms Cassandra Butts. The suggestion just read was lead singer of Kingsmen came in to early after great guitar solo. This VT adds credence to this theory as he lead singer's shrugs as if to say say we recorded this with me singing - so lip sync away. Yellow and black costumes. My favourite colour combination.

How many people caught the false start on the verse after the guitar solo at 2:01? That was on the record (which they are lip syncing to of course) and he duplicated it in this performance perfectly. The story is when they recorded it they were trying to duplicate the Wailers version and Ely came in too early on the verse so he pauses the drummer rolls and then Jack starts singing again. The mistake became so well known that many bands cover it exactly that way. In fact the only time I've seen these guys not do that was in a video of a performance of Shindig where they actually are playing live. Jack also sings the lyrics a little clearer in that performance.

And don't forget the sound of somebody in the background at the 0:58 mark - also from teh original recording. Supposedly during the 1 take of this demo recording, the drummer dropped one of his sticks and he said "F*@k". Since there4 was no editing done to this recording, this was left in and is heard when the band lip-synced to the original (as they did here).

These guys rented an inexpensive small recording studio. Used inexpensive equipment and recorded the song playing it many times. They were not happy at all with their first time playing the song. They made more recordings of it again and again; during the hour or so time they rented the studio. Then their manager listened and told them that the first take of the recordings is the best one out of all the recordings - and that it is the take we should use - cause it sounds so raw, explosive. Jack Ely, the lead singer, even comes in early: 2:00 Then he realizes it and waits and comes in again a few moments later at the correct time he wants to start. It is true, I think. Their manager picked the right recording to use. The way they played and the way he sang sounds off the cuff, crazy, and it is terrific. They are playing here to the record. Not live. I think all bands did that in this show,

I think (I hope) he was being facetious.... Yes, it's lip-synched to the studio version.... A lot of TV shows forced popular music acts to lip-sync for 'control' purposes (to ensure the same sound quality; to keep the same time length, so that they could reliably produce the show to fit schedules; to avoid embarrassing lyric or even total song 'changes' (i.e., forbidden language; switching to an undesirable alternate song); to focus more on the visual effects and sets)... Sometimes the acts did not sound the same live, and TV audiences might be disappointed.... Ed Sullivan usually had the acts perform truly live (or as live as possible) -- which is another reason his show was so good.... Dick Clark and many others, seem to have had all acts lip-synch to their hit records.... I suppose IF you were a top-notch musical act, you could insist in the contract to either perform live -- or insist that you lip-synch (if you knew, you didn't sound good live)....

It also kind of amalgamated bits of Little Orphan Annie, which was slightly satirised in Annie Fanny. Daddy Warbucks in Little Orphan Annie became Sugardaddy Bigbucks in Annie Fanny. Annie Fanny had bright blue eyes. It's Little Orphan Annie who just had circles. The song seems to want to be about Annie Fanny, as female figure with a lot of va va voom, though.

The FBI was asked to investigate whether or not those involved with the song violated laws against the interstate transportation of obscene material. The limited investigation lasted from February to May 1964 and discovered no evidence of obscenity. File Louie Louie (The Song)

clean, except for the point where you can hear the drummer drop the F bomb because he dropped his stick.

I just came across this video. thanks for putting it up.I always had a big question in my mind as to what those lyrics really were saying .I remember as a kid hearing all kinds of things ;in fact if I made a list of all of the lyrics that people thought they were saying they would probably reach to the Moon. That being said, listening to it now it's obvious the clean lyrics for the ones that are correct.

Well, you know this is a lip-sync, you can hear the "F bomb" in the background at the right moment. I always thought every time I saw this being "performed" by the Kingsmen that it was a lip-sync due to the faint F bomb you can hear.

How anyone could say this song was vulgar is beyond me. Must have been desperate for a cause. The term Karen's hadn't been coined yet!!

Lynn Easton's lip-syncing was good, even when Jack Ely sang "Me see" too early. But you could tell he's not impressed with that in the slightest based on the look on his face. Either way, RIP Jack Ely and Lynn Easton.
