Kinks top 10 UK hit single in 1965, written by Ray Davies, which appeared on their album The Kink Kontroversy that same year. Stated by Ray Davies as being about freedom. It’s a song about escaping something”.

Of all the British Invasion bands- Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, The Who with Keith Moon and all, it was the Kinks that got banned from America for four critical years due to backstage and onstage antics. There may have possibly been, just an outside chance of, alcoholic beverages being involved. :)

Filmed in Little Green Street, off Highgate in London. A perfectly preserved little bit of Georgian London which has somehow survived the last 240 years untouched by time. Its still there, bow fronted windows and the cobbled lane. The cottages were originally shops, hence the bow-fronted windows.

About 40 years ago, I read a book on the history of music videos that made special note of this video, as it was apparently the first time someone made a sort of a conceptual video that wasn't showing the band pretending to sing the song on a soundstage, or in a field or whatever. The only time you see them lip synching is the "Yeah!" at the end of each refrain. That was something that pretty much had never been done before.

@@andrewlove9566 Of course, it's not oafishly narcissistic, rude and obnoxious to declare one's opinions as facts. Let alone silly to claim that pointing that out is 'telling people how to live'. I've never known someone to make that cliched claim who wasn't doing so in some haughty, jumped up, arrogant fashion as if they know more than the mainstream and their opinion is more refined because of that. It's like saying Gregory Isaacs was better than Bob Marley, and worse, doing so in an arrogant way. There is no one like Bob or the Wailers, same with the Beatles. They transcend music in a way that is in a category of one among their nearest rivals And that is objective fact. No band can show a staggering, life changing musical journey of such depth, variety, creativity on such a prolific scale as the Beatles. To say so by way of an objective claim, when it is only an opinion, displays a truly foolish arrogance and self-importance and a complete disrespect of Beatles fans, as the underlying premise is they are following the mainstream and what's popular and don't have the refined musical nous you, and the million other claimants, believe yourselves to possess.

Have to agree with you.The Kinks were fiercely underrated, apart from, apparently, all the other pioneering bands around in that phenomenal decade for music. They all knew the score and what a phenomenal song writer Ray was.Dave Davies single handedly invented ‘the riff’. As a side note I believe ‘Village green preservation society’ is up there with, and possibly slightly better than the ‘White album’,and I’m a massive Beatles fan.But the Kinks were just in a league of their own 🙏🙏

Anyone know when this video was made? I wasn’t aware of music videos being made in the 60’s.

They were called promotional videos/films. They would send them to booking agents, radio stations, music stores as another way of showing the bands off besides just sending records, tape reels, and photos.
