The problem with that theory is that there are countries where you can carry any blade, from a knife to sharpened sword without permit and for no reason, and knife crime rates are multiple times lower. Like tens of times multiple times lower.

I am a peaceful person, I've never instigated or caused violence against anyone or been a criminal of any kind but after being mugged I see there is no choice but to have to have something to protect yourself given that the government have outlawed easy access to proven safer deterrents like pepper spray. I would carry a gun if the permit was available, unfortunately, i see no problems with why people would carry knives for their own protection when the country is falling to anarchy.

I think sentencing needs to be sorted as well. Hurt someone with a knife you get 15 to 20 years. Kill someone and you are done. Minimum 30 years. Friend of mine was killed in Hull when we were 16, his killer is out now less than 20 years later. Living on the other side of town to me with a girlfriend and a 2 year old daughter. He should be caged up with the rest of the animals. 16 years for killing a boy who only lived that long himself. Itd almost be funny.

I'm a fairly small dude and I was the same age 15 to 18 I would carry just out of fear hoping if anything happened me pulling the blade would make them run away luckily I was never in that situation because the reality is I probably would have had the blade taken off by the attacker or I would have panicked and done something silly.

@@gudgejm The problem is you are applying a childs logic. 1) How does the criminal know you have a gun anyway, are you walking around everywhere with it in your hand? 2) The criminal might just want your phone and you pulling a gun out means he now has to kill you otherwise he might die. 3) If it were that easy to get guns then there would be a gun epidemic, not a knife epidemic. Giving everybody weapons is the best way to escalate situations that are not life or death into situations that are life or death. That implies more deaths, not less deaths. There is also zero evidence that more weapons act as a deterrent, and actually quite the contrary. Both gun crime in america shows this and knife crime in the UK shows this.

Yeah but when you have a real weapon it is easier, people are more likely to choose an easy path. It doesn't mean that anyone should be able to on 50 BMG killing machines, or conceal carry micro guns (which far more dangerous than the 50 BMG killing machines, even) though. It _is_ the weapon that matters, _as well as_ the mindset of individuals. I'm not for the banning of firearms, but I _do_ think it makes sense to ban anyone (aside from special exemptions such as police) from carrying any small/concealable firearms such as handguns on their person outside of a shooting range or their private property. This is roughly like what the law in Canada is, except Canada has some stupid extra rules that are illogical/net-detrimental, such as banning certain specific models of weapons for being "assault style", as well as banning suppressors. And on a related note, they also ban stuff like carrying around pepper spray or shock devices.

In Australia for example, where I live - gun crime is almost non-existent and when it does happens it's huge news and almost invariably the culprits are high-level organized crime, not street crime.

I have a house in London and travel back and forth between America and the UK for years now as my family is from London and Tampa, Florida so I hold both citizenships. The cultural difference is honestly shocking in the UK at just how bold, aggressive, and confrontational English people are. Because you legally have no means to defend yourself English people just aren't scared to bully each other around on the street. Central London I see groups of men walking around in all black feeling powerful because of the number of people in their groups. They walk around bullying and looking for victims all the time. It's astonishing to see because I've never in my life seen that in America! Doing that is basically suicide. You will die with 1 bullet and it will be a legal kill. Now you're dead and the guy you tried to rob or bully gets to go home and eat dinner with his family after killing you and resuming a normal life. The fact that in London people rob with knives is really crazy. I'm not trying to sound like some typical cocky American... but man I hope these kids don't grow up and go abroad trying to rob people with a knife. Majority of everyone from 16 year olds to 40 year old soccer moms and elderly people walk around with a pistol tucked in their pants or purse. It's scary to know that in London people are so quick to rob and get physical with strangers. You just don't see that in America. People don't rob you on the street or try to pick a fight with you because there's more guns in America than there are citizens by 200%. Everyone minds their business and leaves you alone because it doesn't matter if you're 6' 5' tall and the man you're robbing is 70 years old 5' 2". When you both have guns you both have a 50/50 chance of survival. I personally when I'm home in America always have a Glock 30 with 1 hollow point bullet already in the head for my protection. Most of the gun violence we have are stupid kids grabbing their dad's gun out his safe and taking it school or pre-meditated gang targeting. You'd be surprised how low the crime rates are for guns in situations with 2 complete strangers who just got in an argument in public compared to knife crime between strangers in the UK. Guns keep Americans physically safe from each other in 99% of situations that would occur if we didn't have them. The UK has some of the MOST STRICT gun laws and self defense laws in the entire WORLD. If someone breaks into your house in the UK you basically need to cook them dinner and kiss their feet or they can sue you.

Also nearly all of the gun homicides in the us are by the mentally unstable or by violent gangs. Regular people don't just go around shooting other people. The rights of the average person should not be determined by the worst of society. Instead we would be better off trying to improve the conditions of those growing up in violent settings.

Weapons of any kind are part of the problem when it comes to violent crime, no one claims they are THE problem, everyone knows the root cause is people and the society they live in.

They banned guns so people use knives to rob people. If they ban guns its only going to make them find something else to use or it will make them more likely to find ways to get guns into their country. They need to fix the people, not the weapons

If you have AR-15 then you would not worry about knives.

Exactly, I've had my own knife since I was 11 years old and learned not to mess around with them as a child. I now own Bowie knives, machetes, and other hunting knives. I also own an AR-15( Springfield Saint Victor), 12 gauge shotgun, 9mm semi automatic pistol, s&w 686(.357 magnum revolver) and lastly a .22 LR rifle. I have friends who have way more firearms than me and we are all good people. We only have them for self defense. The knives though I have for tools, they are great for opening packages and cutting food.

The difference in the uk is that people carry them for different reasons, gang wars between areas in London and across the uk mean that the knives are not used for tools or self defence, if a gang member saw or heard of an opposing member in their area there’s a high chance of them stabbing the other purely because of the fact that they’re in different gangs, a lot of the time they don’t even know why they’re beefing. Same way guns are used in the ghettos in the USA

Imagine thinking getting knives off the streets won't decrease crimes. 1 less crime is still a step further. Of course you can't solve the problem in 2 days but if everybody thought like you then there would be no evolution and that's sad.

MANNNNY Govts throughout history have disarmed their people and VERY bad things occured, outlaws never stopped existing... your idea is that you can eliminate evil, and you can't. Yes we dont want to be a nanny state with blanket bans on anything with a blade we just need stronger sentences if they use bladed tools in a criminal way and education about knifes to show they are tools not weapons and some can be collectable or antique

We are educated in school, at least those born from 2003 onwards, and I’ve had A LOT of lessons in school about knife crime and gangs, also these young guys know that knives take lives, they know that their gang beefs destroy families, they literally talk about mothers loosing their sons in the drill songs they make, they just don’t care. Sometimes the beefs are too deep and too personal, more than just wanting to deal drugs on another territory, it’s basically a story of retaliation and revenge that never ends. Knives are not the issue, broken homes and drug trade are the issue.
