I made the mistake of handling this knife, and fell in love with it... Every damned tool I can think of that I could need while out walking around... Another fine catch over @oldetownecutlery3190 in Cumming, GA.
I bought my first Swiss Champ in 1984 and it’s been in my pocket ever since. I’ve used victorinox lifetime warranty twice just to have the sides replaced and every time it came back like new and free of charge, they even pay for me to send it to them. I have given away at least five of them to my wife, children and other family members and I recently bought a second one as a backup spare!!! The Swiss champ is the ultimate Victorinox!!!
Don't dismiss the fish scaler! It is fantastic for cutting thru cardboard boxes and styrofoam. When doing woodwork, It makes an excellent depth guage and I've also used it as an angle guage. The tip of it can also be used for holding small nails/tacks when hammering them in. Also a good staple remover. It's one of my most used tools, and I don't even fish! 😃
Good points, I never even thought of it... I just saw the name of the tool and was like, I will never use that... but you are right, its a metal tool that you can repurpose for other things...
Hi guys👋🏼 My dad is Italian and he had one of these when I was growing up as a kid! I always wanted one! I’ve had the very small ones on key-rings and used them so much for all sorts of occasions! Happily, my husband just bought me a White Swiss Champ! I have it on me everyday and it comes in so handy as I do my housework or pottering around the house or in the garden! I’ve had it less than a week and yet it’s already been used several times a day for jobs around the house! It looks stunning and is every bit as great as I’d imagined it would be! 😊 Even girls love a Swiss Army knife!! 👍🏼 Lisa x
As a swiss guy... well we grew up with these knives in the house! I always carry with me a Ranger. It doesn't have the pliers (which I can live without, and in case I also carry a Spirit multitool), but it has the most I might need on the spot (can opener and corkskrew, saw, file, scissors, and a pair of blades).
My perfect pocket knife would be an Alox, like the Farmer X, but with the addition of a file, pliers and a philips driver. Adding those tools to the blade, saw, can and bottle openers, scissors and awl, would cover all the bases for me and probably be the only blade I ever carried...
Mam pelno scyzoryków Victorinox. Ale Swiss Champ juz mam drugiego.Kupilem 1 do edc,a 2 do plecaka Bob. Tez mowilem,ze go nie kupie,bo za duzy,za drogi,za ciezki.A juz mam 2.
Great tool got 3 of them, one is from 80’s vintage blue model . One is just new in box and nr is used on daily basics . I have leathermans, spydercos etc. all in box ,swiss champ is my edc.👍
I love that you supported local business, but the Swiss Champ is only $70 on Amazon, red or black scales. That's a significant difference! Really love mine for camping and tinkering around the house. Always bring one in my bag on trips. Good video! Enjoy your new tool!
Normally their prices are spot on with what I see at Amazon or BladeHQ... Weird, I didn't catch that this one was priced high. Never happened there before. I will mention it to Lee next time I am in there, which is several times a month...
@@SquireSCA I will say Amazon and Ebay have been the only places to have these prices on Victorinox. What you paid is pretty standard for all other vendors. Just hard to beat Amazon right now.
@@ChristopherRobin58 Yeah, the Amazons is where I get most of my blades from, but I get a lot from Olde Towne as well. Most of the time, their price is to the penny, what BladeHQ charges... Oh well, it's $30 and supports a local small shop, so I am fine with it...
While I've opted for the Ranger, a Knipex Cobra and SOG PowerPint for my EDC, I feel like the Swiss Champ has everything you truly need, and nothing superfluous. Definitely the best choice for someone that wants it all in one tool!
My dream EDC is to take a Alox Farmer X, and add a metal file, inline philips and a pair of pliers. Give me that, and it would be the only knife I ever carry. Alas, nobody does and Victorinox hasn't really come out with anything new other than color options, in many years...
@@arbiter1er You can definitely find uses for it! But it does feel like it could be replaced with something more directly relevant - same with the hook.
I considered the Swiss Champ but then saw the Handyman. It has 3 tools less but it's a lot more compact and the only useful tool you miss is the philips driver. A Handyman with a philips driver instead of a wine opener would indeed be ideal.
I finally broke down and took everyone's advice and ordered the Handyman. Was supposed to be here today, but like 25-30% of what I order from Amazon, it gets delayed or lost, so it's not coming today. Hoping maybe tomorrow... I will see if I like it without the back-philips, but if not, I am gonna take it to my local knife shop that forges and does custom work... I will take them a cheaper "donor" SAK that has the back philips, and pay him to remove the scales, drill out the back rivet, swap the cork screw for the philips and they re-rivet it and put it all back together. I will then have what was the discontinued "Craftsman" that they stopped making years ago.
I’ve had a SAK for about 30 years I think it’s a Tinker but not 100% sure it’s been well used still really good. About 3 or 4 months ago I bought a Swiss Champ absolutely love it carry it on every hike not had to use it much to be fair but it’s very reassuring knowing it’s there if needed. Brilliant products SAK.
Had this same concern. From the DTinker.... went to Champ. I grew up with it thinking it was too big. Now being an Adult, it's amazingly small to have most, if not all the tools I need. That said, Leatherman Wave/Charge offers all but sturdier tools. But the SAK's Knife and Scissors are still the best.
Yeah, the Swisstool Spirit X is what is most commonly in my pocket these days. It's thinner and nicer to hold than my Leatherman Arc, but the tools are nicer and it seems better put together... The one thing the Arc has is a nicer one handed blade in Magnacut. Other than that, the Vic tool is the better tool overall...
The Swiss Champ was the original "best bang for the buck" of the Victorinox line when I first started camping. I have several now but the original is in the "SOS" kit which I bought nearly 40 years ago. I had it refurbished by Victorinox a few years back. Other models with more features (some ridiculously so) have been released but the Swiss Champ always struck me as the point where practicality and cost, met up. I now collect Swiss Army Knives and I have several that are veritable boat anchors! A couple even have butane lighters!
Yeah, I find it is a careful balance between having everything you might ever want, versus throwing everything including the kitchen sink at it and making it overkill and counter-productive...
I have had mine for 42 years. It doesn't have the hook on the back but it has all the other bits. It has been very useful but is looking a bit used now but so am i😅
Ridiculous in a good way... The amount of stuff they packed into this tool that fits in the palm of your hand, is impressive. Have a Swiss Tools Spirit X arriving tomorrow
Swisschamp been my edc for a year wont go back ive been supised how offend I've used the steel pin writing pen even the fish scaler every now in then for various things
Personally I love the magnifier being on my belt. Old eyes and fine print. .. I found out through another video that the small lens is meant to be used like a jewelers loupe. Works great.
The Swiss Champ is just the Handyman with 3 extra tools: [fish scaler/hook disgorger/ruler], magnifying glass & phillips screwdriver. Unless you clean fish scales, need a very strong phillips screwdriver, or a magnifying glass to read small print, the Swiss Champ is overkill. The Handyman's can opener has a flat phillips screwdriver which works well enough, & the small flathead screwdriver fits a lot of phillips screws. The plyers can be used to disgorge fish hooks. The 6 layer Swiss Champ is too think, & the Handyman is pushing it as far a thickness at 5 layers. If you can live without plyers, the Ranger has all the tools that the Handyman does, & is the maximum comfortable thickness at 4 layers, & cost about $50, 55% less than the Swiss Champ ($110), & 40% less than the Ranger ($85). I prefer my SAKS to have a corkscrew, which is an excellent staple remover from wood, & can hold Victorinox corkscrew tools (tiny flat or philipps scredriver, tiny hex, or tiny poker) & tinder for a ferro rod, or paper clips &/or safety pins. I also open corked bottles occasionally.
I could do without the fish scaler, but I love having the saw, the metal file, scissors and all that stuff. I actually use the magnifying glass a good bit... I often carry the Leatherman Arc, or the Swisstools MX... Both are fairly large. What I would really love is a Farmer X Alox, with an added Phillips and metal file... On my SwissChamp, I do have one of those ferro rods stored in the cork screw.
I have a modified fieldmaster & aside from not having the corkscrew,I’m very happy with it.However like you and many others I’m planning on buying the Swiss champ, then modifying it as well & hopefully after that I’m satisfied with my multi tools.
@@SquireSCA yeah I saw that.If I could have my fieldmaster with a corkscrew,small screwdrivers added & 6 slot scales ,I think I’d have everything I could need.
I'm from India but don't have a single Swiss knife with me you are all lucky to have many..😞😞😞😞 I'm unfortunate because I don't have money to buy atleast 1 piece of knife
Ok you need an explorer with plus scales A ranger with plus scales it is a huntsman with a nail file/saw And a Swiss champ with plus scales And outrider I prefer the Japanese model
Have you tried the Handyman? If so, you wouldn't have to buy all those! I'm joking of course :D I have several SAKs, among which the Handyman (it is by my opinion the best possible compromise between size and functionality), but I'm now considering to buy a Swisschamp as well...
The Handyman would be perfect, but they omitted the damned Philips screwdriver, which is off, as you would expect something with the name of "Handyman" to include the world's most common screwdriver. lol
@@SquireSCA I'm successfully using the one, integrated with the can opener for this purpose, but yes, you're right, the real Phillips is more appropriate after all.
Yeah, for some reason the one I bought was priced high. I could have gotten it cheaper online, but I like supporting my local mom and pop knife shop when I can.
With reasonable care, that SAK will last decades. I have one which is about 30 years old and still in good condition. One of the best values still available today.
I considered that one but its twice the price and it might be a bit too wide... I don't mind some bulk, but it does reach a point where it becomes awkward to use...
I know. The money isn't important, really... It's a fantastic knife and tool, even at the price I paid. Not sure why that particular one was priced higher, when all their other SAKs are priced within pennies of what BladeHQ charges. Is what it is, no worries!
@@SquireSCA Ahhh...good point. I've used the can opener end for the phillips. It'll never be a true phillips head screwdriver...but it has worked for me in the past. I think they discontinued the Craftsman now.
The thing About the swiss champ is it is a must buy if you collect them you may not use it because of its size or weight but it is the iconic model that has been around for years despite the fact that models like the ranger or huntsman offer most of the tools that the champ does while being half the weight
See, I actually do carry it in my pocket. I don't mind the weight. When you are used to carrying a gun and spare ammo, a knife that size doesn't seem all that big or heavy. Right now my main EDC is the new Leatherman Arc, which is bigger and heavier than the SwissChamp,
I'm watching all your videos upto now you are all a lucky people. but I don't have a single Swiss knife with me in my hand because I'm poor to buy if anyone intrested to contribute for me it will be helpful I'm waiting to get this atleast one victorinox swiss knife. since 10years I'm waiting but due to financial problem I don't have any model of victorinox with me😞
I pocket carry the cybertool L which is about the same size, and pretty similar toolset. I’ve found it’s about as big as I can go for pocket carry. I’ve found the amount of walking you do at work plays a big role in deciding lol
This one is funny. I will go with a Leatherman Wave. That thing is like the Big Mac of Swiss Army knives and it is fugly. Once you go metric you will never go back. Everything measures bigger in metric.
I also have three of these things one I have had since the 90s. I have not been around the world with it but it has been on many trips and saved my bacon many times. For some reason I'll try the Leatherman and then put it back in the knife drawer and grab the Swiss champ
