The Kulture Study: Dreamcatcher 'BEcause' MV REACTION & REVIEW 

Jiu said something like Koreans watch scary movies and stuff to give them chills in the summer. If you listen to the rest of the album, it's definitely a summer special album where you can hear that they explored different sounds.

I think someone said JiU is actually the real bad guy, and she's "capturing" Gahyeon. At first we think Gahyeon is the bad one because of the "mirror" scene at the beginning, when she's trying to strangle JiU, but I think she was just trying to get rid of her. But JiU won in the end, hence the creepy smile, and Gahyeon sitting next to her in the center 🤔 I loved this song and MV !

The fact that PD got the ‘US’ references that quickly proves there’s no other filmmaker like them 😆 Truly love this comeback; just enough creepy & rock elements for me! One of my fav title tracks

Dreamcatcher said that their choreographer was inspired by US so the beginning with Jiu and Gahyeon mirrored is actually doppelgangers, Gahyeon does a scissor motion at some point and then at the end, Gahyeon does that creepy hand gesture that Lupita Nyong'o does (tapping on your cheeks while smiling)

You know what I just realized? They keep talking about "all your breath" and then "your face turns blue" ...like when you are choking and can't breathe? Are they talking about like... the concept of "if I can't have you no one can" those people that are so obsessed with their SO they...kill them when they try to leave or get away...??? Like is the duality when they are nice and raining gifts onto the person, and then when the person makes them mad they fly into a rage and end up killing them or something? That's wild AF. And sad (but they did say BE is sad, soooo...)

I noticed that in Gahyeon's part, "When you see me, smile for me, smile for me", it really matches her visual. It's like she says it sweetly on the first time, but then she says it again in a scary, demanding tone (with her frown). How cool and how creepy is that? 👀👀

I can't stop listening to this song, it's absolutely addictive. Their b-sides "Whistle" and "Alldaylong" have been on repeat as well!

Incredible comeback imo. Dreamcatcher do a fantastic job of melding classic k-pop musical tropes (EDM, orchestral, tropical) with their signature pop-rock sound. The chorus may feel slight at first but during it's final run, the additional instruments kicking in adds more weight and support. The bridge is one of the most incredible kpop bridges I have ever heard and is one of Dreamcatcher's best along with You & I and Scream. The haunting melody, the chilling talking by Sua, Siyeon's soft voice, and the hollow instrumental. I am literally obsessed. It sounds like it could be on the soundtrack for Coraline or something like that. 10/10 comeback!!!

I can literally remember you saying "omg that's Handong" during your Odd Eye reaction. Come on, PD 😂

This mv is inspired by the movie US! In the choreo the Wear red while holding hands in a straight line. In addition to that they form scissors with their fingers and JIU is a mirror of Gahyeon but then she gets choked. And there's just similar shots as well, like in the second chorus when Gahyeon puts both hands on her cheeks. Or in the first chorus where Siyeon looks down and her reflection acts very feral.

My interpretation of SuA’s lyrics are face turning blue for sadness, or literal blue after losing breath/choking. Either way, the lyrics are really creepy and unsettling!

They named the title BEcause btw because they used the Chinese character (BE) which means sadness, so they wanted the title to mean the cause of sadness 😊

i think someone proposed an idea that there are 3 pairs where one member is the original and the other is a 'copy' based on their hair colours (the only one without a copy is gahyeon). and the part where they sing 'your face is blue' i think has connection with the choreography. because when sua sings that, she motions with her hands towards the other members and they start 'choking' themselves with their hands. so i guess it could imply that the face is blue because they're gasping for air.

I took a screen shot of the chair and zoomed in on it. It looks like an old electric chair or torture chair since it has metal bands for wrists and ankles. If it's a throne it's a very creepy one. The company that makes their MV's (Sunny Visual) is noted in the industry for making videos that have a lot of fantasy elements. They've been with Dreamcatcher since Fly High and they just keep getting better at bringing Dreamcatcher's world to life. The imagery in the video suggests, through the concept of the doppleganger, the duality of human nature. This ties in perfectly with the Nightmare series which has the same central theme. Your face also turns blue when you're being strangled just as Gahyeon does to Jiu at the beginning of the choreo.

fun fact: its easy to assume Yoohyeon is a bellhop, but in fact according to her she is actually the hotel CEO 😂

Notice though, that the chair, I think, is an electric chair, and at the end, it's Gahyeon sitting in it after Siyeon moves aside. There's a strong implication that JiU is actually the main villain, running the hotel and capturing the other girls, and essentially making them her "dolls". From this perspective, it seems that Siyeon was probably her previous victim, and the "throne" was kind of a display plinth for her. Now JiU has Gahyeon, she's taken Siyeon's place as the new favourite plaything and centerpiece of the display... But yeah, you totally caught a lot of the Us references (which were absolutely deliberate; I actually watched it for the first time last week 😜 ), and also nice callout for Misery, which JiU referenced in one of their interviews, and is absolutely a good analogy for the song.

I think we only saw JIU and Gahyeon run because their copies are the easiest to survive outside without getting caught. Handongs original version already died or got dragged away at least so she's just running around. But Jiu and Gahyeon might be the next ones to find their reflections. They don't have anything on their faces and look unnatural, like dolls (Siyeon also acts like a broken doll). So Jiu and Gahyeon are still trying to escape and not get caught by their bad copies. SUA on the other hand took the apple from the bad copy and after that we see all the members standing mirrored to their copies. But the one in the mirror doesn't have a mark on her face so I believe that SUA was the main character getting choked out in the beginning and getting her life stolen. Then she managed to break free, together with the copies of the other members and the hunt began.

STAN DREAMCATCHER for good dreams and good songs. And let's get the girls the recognition they deserve which has been happening slowly since the Dystopia era, especially Odd Eye. Also DREAMCATCHER doing their take on a summer concept 🤭

Dreamcatcher are legends for being able to maintain their style and still coming up with bops kudos to Leez and ollounder and DCC. Dreamcatcher never disappoints

Well, well, well. Hi there! Dreamcatcher are outdoing themselves here once again. Musically, the song is a fantastic journey. There actually are "cute" parts, but there also are parts where the guitars go full metal. The variations in BEcause remind me of their previous masterpiece, Deja Vu. The bridge with SuA's slow rap and Yoohyeon's adlibs is possibly the most beautiful one they have ever done. About the meaning: According to Dami, BEcause is about love becoming obsession. And also, this is a stand-alone story. They go back to their horror roots, which I really enjoy. They noted that if you look at "BE" as a written Chinese character "悲“, that would mean "sadness". So the song title would mean "The Cause of Sadness". And that would make the lyric "because I like you" to maybe mean "the cause of sadness is I like you". The video picks up on that. JiU seems to be the puppet master here (in my interpretation). She is the one trapping the other members and turning them into puppets, but Gahyeon tries to escape (as you can see by her throwing off the cage right in the beginning). It seems JiU catches her again though, "because she likes her". And I didn't even touch on the references to the movie "Us" yet, there is so much going on. The lyrics are even creepier. SuA sings: "Your face turns blue, blue. Your expression is like ocean view.", hinting at strangulation due to the one being obsessed taking things way, way too far. Dreamcatcher are clearly not afraid to tackle the difficult subjects, and they do it masterfully here - again. For me, this is more than just pop, it is art.

hmm, have you guys noticed the color grading on the park? go to the first post-chorus with Siyeon saying forever love, noticed that there are two sides, the first is blue and the second as red in the final chorus notice Gahyeon running away in that blue side of the mirror, idk if jiu as well, but i think that Gahyeon and Jiu were the ones trapped and their other self exchanged positions with them, thats why you see them on the first verse forshadowing that they are not the real "them"

i loved this comeback so much, it's actually refreshing to see them do a more chill, toned down but still haunting style of song after they put out so many hard hitting tracks. it fits the vibe of summer for me personally and i hope to see them do more styles like this in the future! i also reallyyy loved the album

Fun fact, the trolley that Yoohyeon is pushing in the beginning has the outfits that SuA and JiU have on while running away. So the beginning part is really the end and the time running out means it might be another person.

I always took the face turning blue line to indicate a sense of strangulation which works on both a physical level and a metaphor level as the obsessive love is figuratively cutting you off from personal freedom and choice. Also loved the duality of the mv as it reminded me of a favorite literary line I read somewhere as it has the feeling "of having an itch scratched by a nail that is slightly too sharp".

The Rap verse from Dami definitely has 90’s Prodigy vibes.

I mean, Dreamcatcher does the pararel worlds reflection is most of their comabacks, so I love that they stick to that

I also recommend rewatching the music video and look for blue/red colour schemes. The garden in the background has a blue or red colour (very obvious at the virst chorus with Siyeon, sitting on top of the cement culvert and then having camera pan down to another Siyeon who says 'forever mine, even all your breath' but this time, the garden behind Siyeon is coloured Red signifying that the lower Siyeon is the doppelganger)

Best MV and song of 2021 so far. The assembling of the song is amazing.

Indeed! This comeback was inspired by the film us (the concept, the MV and even the Choreography)

I really loved this song, especially the chorus. The first half of the chorus is nice and soft giving the feeling of leading u in in a loving way, then the second half just tells u that I love u and it gives the creepy feeling of them not letting you go, I love u so we are stuck forever. All in all this song is freaking awesome.

I don't know if someone has noticed about this but when I noticed I was scared xd. GaHyeon begins the song trying to strangle JI-U with her hands and SU-A's line says: "Blue, blue, your face turns blue the look on your face is like ocean view". Are they implying that they loved someone so much that their other side ended up killing him/her for obssession?

Im so happy they didnt lean too far into the creepy w clowns, love all the live performances and the outfits! This has a bad love obsession. The underlying darkness is peak Dreamcatcher. This maybe my least fav album, the b sides didnt resonate with me this time but I love BEcause!

I'm kind of amazed you didn't pick up on Jiu's facial expression at the start. I mean there's no right or wrong, but in my eyes all things point to Jiu being the leader of whatever is happening. Jiu and Gahyeon running imo, suggests Jiu is chasing Gayeon. Gahyeon at the start is trying to escape hence the cage, but the end result was Jiu catching her which is why it goes out with them two centred together. There's so many different perspectives for their MVs I love it. It's so fun listening and reading everyone's take on it.

*I was waiting patiently for this reaction-* And also- It doesn't seem like a 6 month wait (for the comeback) Since Dreamcatcher has been active and releasing content almost on a daily basis- They even have a variety show now hehe- The name for the dopplegangers in US are called *"Tattered/Tethered"* I believe-

Jordan Orme (a another reactor who edits music videos) also immediately put two-and-two together and said the video was very Us inspired. Yall went into great detail about just how deep the story of this video goes and those similar 'Us' tropes that were used. I also didn't even notice that Gahyeon and JiU were the only ones being chased the whole time, so cool that you pointed that out and made more sense of what's going! Love ur reactions per usual

PD really has a great mind and creativity. The way they described the story line in the MV was so interesting!

Personally I feel like this is Gahyeon's era simply because her facial expressions really embody that duality of innocent doll who loves you and obsessive doll who you better love back. Her expressions are always great but with this song especially.

I love this cb so much, reminds me a lot of their chase me and good night eras but with something new, which is awesome. The choreo is great and the song *chef's kiss*. They said during their showcase that the mv and choreo are inspired by US.

I believe Jiu is the true villain, she is the concierge, she also doesn't change clothes at all throughout the mv like the rest of them, in the end she holds the sand clock as if she controls the time inside the hotel as well as around it on the hotel grounds and thats how she traps people in. Dami might be the one who corrupts the guests or she was the first one Jiu took so shes the strongest henchman as indicated by the black flower thing on her face since she's the only one with it. Yoohyeon is the second to be turned after so she her job is to guide people to the room where they are turned/switched since shes not as strong as Jiu and Dami. Sua the whole mv was lost in the hotel hallways and the imprisoned Sua with the mask was the one inside the mirror who gave free version of herself the apple in the end we see she was turned and now has the flower mark. Handong and Gahyeon are the fresh guests, Handong has her suspicions but in the end she let's herself fall asleep and be turned/switched/taken by Dami. Gahyeon has realized something was wrong and tries to escape so Jiu simulates how Gahyeon is feeling before she overtakes her body with evil. I don't really know how to incorporate Siyeon in the story, she might have been just a guest that ended up in that room. But like you say Siyeon, Gahyeon and Handong don't have the flower markings so it kinda makes me think of a different theory of Jiu kidnapping people and seeing if they are her doppelganger and Siyeon and Handong were her first choices until she met Gahyeon. Also the lines "blue, blue your face like the ocean view" and "forever mine your breathe forever mine" insinuate that the person is choking so their face is blue like the ocean view.

Actually, jiu is the mastermind. Siyeon is the last one being captured by jiu thats why you can see her on the throne before. The only one that is not captured by jiu is gahyeon thats why in the one she eventually captured. All of them are actually the dopplegangers now excapt for gahyeon. Yiu can see that their dresses are different from the start and on the end. Jiu smile in the end because she now completed all of them.

If you want an unobstructed view of them in their outfits (including Dami) at the end of the video, watch the BEcause teaser. They all do creepy smile (not just JiU) at the end and then they have the ending shot of the MV.

Just thinking about how many takes the first scene took since it's a one take. Like if one person made a mistake they all had to do it again

In reference of US, the blue represents the " original" (from the surface) and the red, the doppelganger from the basement! (that explain the cut with them dancing in blue on top and red on the bottom). There is so much in there! Gahyeon in the beginning is the one who wants to be free! She is the one that wants to be free from her obsession, but at the end, we can see that she is like a doll (dull under the influence of Jiu), she didn't surpassed her obsession and, as Jiu has the hourglass reseted, make an evil, the time has passed. This is a loop, where the originals (themself) fight to beat their obsession of their toxic love (doppelganger). We can also take note of how Siyeon is moving (like a broken doll as a doppelganger like in the movie), the beautiful staging and clues ( the presence of red and blue!). Sorry I can't express really well in English lol
