Us Ujungs haven't be really disturbed by that change in concept, Starship is steadily preparing us for it since Save Me Save You, especially in their b-sides. We are overall very happy about the comeback and most ujungs wanted their concept to change a bit because both the members and us wanted to see them doing something different.
I’ll be fine with whatever concept they do, since in every album they have sort of had a signature WJSN song (ex. Where you are in Neverland & Super Moon in their newest)
wjsn is a five years old group, I think it's nice they are releasing stuff that is a bit more different than their "cosmic sound", and since 2019 I would say their bsides have been sounding like that so it's no surprise to us ujungs :)
One thing I have noticed about WJSN is that 90% of the times their b-sides are usually MUCH better than the title tracks, and this time is no different, the b-sides of Unnatural are just CHEF'S KISS. They just have this big power that makes a huge difference on their albums.
The "magazine photoshoot" MV is everywhere for real, even in BG mv (more focus on danse when GG is more focus on glamor shots). It's always the same type of MV where the sets and the outfits are the only important points. No story, juste the most aesthetic shots of each member. Thoses MV can be summerize to multiple set with a design/Minimal concept and "chic/vogue" vibe (pretty empty and large sets most of the time). Take glamor shots of each member, 2-3 dance group shots, mix them together and that's pretty much it :/
For amazing MVs with storyline, I would like to recommend ONF music videos (we must love, why, beautiful beautiful), if you haven't watched them before :)
@@veninagelynchua515 oneus, dreamcatcher, and gfriend too. onf, dreamcatcher, oneus, and gfriend have such amazing storylines in their mvs and songs 😫👌
I feel like that's why Loona's MV's to me really stand out (also they're visually stunning). While a few I would say lean a bit towards the generic side I like how they all tell a story within the Loonaverse and have deeper meanings and messages. Loona's predebut MV's are especially story driven and I love it!
I think As You Wish was the last magical title track. They still have some of that sound in their B sides, hopefully they dont completely erase it. I love Unnatural, it does sound like it could be an IZONE song to me
i have an actual obsession with seola’s first lines in the song... like the melody is incredible and her voice is so velvety- unnatural is just so good y’all 😩
Just like most people mentioned, I also think that after 5 years it is natural for their sound to change, girls grew up both age-wise and musically. I personally think this kind of style is better for Exy for example, since debut I don't think she got lots of tracks where she can really show off her rapping, maybe Catch Me? Also I think since girls grew up, cutesy concepts like I Wish for example are harder to pull off for older members, same moves gives different vibes when someone is 21 vs 26. Another thing is when looking at girls' self produced songs I feel like this is closer to their styles and wants. Personally I feel like they've slowly and gradually bloomed.
Honestly they've been around for 5 years at this point and it's only natural their sound will change. I really don't mind because I never stanned the girls for the "cosmic concept" per se but more so just because I thought they had amazing songs regardless of the "concept". As long as the music quality stays I really could care less what the "concept" is and as far as the albums go they have always been some of my absolute favourites, this one included. Also the cosmic concept wasn't doing that great with the general public and they've gained a lot more attention since they've started to change the sound of their title tracks.
I think thats what wjsn members wanted they always was trained with these mature and chic concept, like a lot of their b-side are like this since save me save you. The members was kinda tired of the magical thing they've been doing for 5 years now. I think they are gonna comeback with the magical concept next comeback as this one is called "UNNATURAL"..?
@@BoChan0624 Girl Crush is also on its way out. Look at the rise of Brave Girls. The market is oversaturated with Crush now and Koreans are looking to the old for the new and then you have trot. This happened in the in the 2010s a lot of sexy concepts and everyone wanted cute like Gfriend and Apink so that became most popular. Companies need to be smart and not follow a trends to stand out now.
I think it's interesting that their mvs have been loosing quality/creativity when their popularity has been rising and their sales have been exploding lately.
@@WJSN_officiaI I feel like even without cosmic concept, the MV can be good quality and creative. Some examples in my mind are Taemin - Want and Chungha - Snapping. Both of these MVs have similar concept to Unnatural and are also creative. I think the problem is Starship isn't investing enough in the past few MVs.
@@pllatlatvd6851 i didnt say that unnatural's mv wasnt good, it was just... it. bcs we've seen other mvs like unnatural with similar concept, i wasnt as amazed compared to their previous mvs. nonetheless, unnatural still had a good mv, its just they're not going the cosmic route anymore that underwhelmed me
Yes, I hope we will get another comeback soon instead of waiting for a long time again... Also it's really nice seeing someone who likes Kyoukai no Kanata
This sounds very negative however this music video looked cheap to me, starship seems to be slacking on wjsn when they literally had one comeback last year. To add, I am very scared for WJSN because izone disbands soon, Wonyoung and Yujin need to be in a new group and it seems like Starship is putting their full focus on them.
I wouldn't say the MV looks "cheap" but it's obviously a step down in budget from music videos like Save Me Save You, Dreams Come True, etc etc etc. I feel like the once dancing scene (the one that Yooa used in Bon Voyage) looks very low budget (since we know that it's used for many performance videos). The other dancing set with the blue lights was very cool. But overall, I think the music video was very plain and I do hope that Starship gives WJSN a more visually captivating music video.
Personally, I'm also really gonna miss that OG whimsical sound from their songs but I'm glad they're transitioning into a more mature sound. I just feel that their music video quality has gotten worse since As You Wish because it's become as basic as it gets. Starship NEEDS to hire a better studio/creative team damn.
PS. PD, I think you'd enjoy Yalla and Super Moon from the album! Most tracks have a disco/retro sound to them though, so it's not really very wjsn-like, sadly.
WJSN is moving on from their whimsical and fantasy image as many recently debuted girl groups are kinda doing their old stuff. Besides that, the most of the girls are going to their mid 20s, therefore they want to show their mature side and not showing their cutesy side. Since most of the girls are into retro and city pop, and Neverland was the album which started off this genre and had good reactions from the fandom, they wanted to adopt that as their new sound, without removing their image as spacey and dreamy concept. I think Unnatural really got a good reaction from the international fans, and you can see from their MV Views of this video, many neutral stans took attention of them and got a positive response. I hope this would work out for them as they are due for a contract renewal in 2023.
as a fan though, i'm such a huge fan of their old sound to be honest especially with as you wish and how everything sounded kinda magical and nostalgic. the recent ones are pretty great for me too, but it's not exactly giving me the same kinda vibe, but i still love love it in some way. need to get used to it though, i think. 💓🥰
Be honest we're all going to miss the magical concepts of The Secret to WJ Stay? :) But I really love this comeback though. Just not as much as Secret, Save Me Save You and La La Love.
as an ujung, I personally think they still have that magical sound, they are just slightly reshaping it, for lack of a better word. to me, their magic is presenting itself more in an elegant type of way, the type of magic that is controlled and powerful, but still has that hint of fantasy hidden underneath. as for the music video, it did feel a little plain to me. I think starship definitely could've gone all out on a sparkling royalty concept and didn't utilize the concept to its full potential (it's starship, are we truly surprised?). but overall, the girls have been wanting a more mature look and sound for a while now and I'm so happy that they finally get to have that. plus, they look absolutely STUNNING. I think their sound is changing for the better and that they are just in a transition stage right now. but regardless I am still very much so enjoying this comeback and think it is a very good sound for them.
I've really preferred WJSN B-sides for their past 3 releases more than the title tracks, and I don't think album will be an exception. Pantomime is still one of my most played songs of all time.
I said the exact same thing while watching the mv the first time. The sets reminded me of iz*one and wekimeki's song cool (its probably because of their usage of lights) and that the way the mv was shot reminds me of the boyz mvs. Anyway, I liked the song, though I think their older title tracks are more memorable.
I feel like ss is forgetting what makes WJSN different. I became an u-jung back in 2016 and they're ... following mainstream kpop now. It shows in their recent comebacks (specifically title tracks ... apart from summer releases and WJSN Chocome of course) and MVs especially. Starship took away their main title track sounds and decided to follow trends. Their MVs use to be so magical too... Secret, I Wish, DCT, Save me Save You, As You Wish, and arguably La La Love. Now their MVs look too simple for a group who's concept is supposedly "magical" and "cosmic". Unnatural is a nice MV but that concept doesn't fit what WJSN's vibes should be, same with Butterfly. Their looks and sound has skewed from what got me into them in the first place. Starship gave up on their concept since 2020, and I wish I knew why.
i don't get the complain about music video when 90% of kpop mv literally just about visual and dance anyway with no storyline tho. even the group like blackpink and twice. and nah man, cosmic concept already overused by wjsn and yea sometimes they need something new to freshen things, most of the members also already 25+ im sure they prefer dancing to song like unnatural rather than i wish. and it's not like you couldn't notice this as wjsn songs thou since they still keep that funk sound as well
it’s okay if you didn’t like butterfly as a title track but please, PLEASE tell me you listened the whole mini album because Neverland has AMAZING songs, really magical songs. Anyways, I feel like they changing their concept is a good thing, I mean they are a 5 year old girl group and it’s fine if they want to try more mature concepts because their essence is still there and their bsides are still great. They do feel like this amazing magical characteristic wjsn sound. Maybe in the future they return to their “cosmic”/“space” sound but with more mature tones and we are going to be so ready for them.
I don't know if you came back sometime after this comment, but he actually mentioned in this video that he liked Pantomime and Hola a lot from Neverland.
The MV isn't special, but this song is really good. I also appreciate the fact that WJSN transitioned to an elegant chic concept instead of a typical girl crush concept like most girl groups go into. They've kind of discarded the cosmic sound in their title tracks since a few comebacks ago (though they usually perserve it in their b-sides), but I hope they maintain their magical cosmic sound and eventually go back to it from time to time. But I LOVE elegant chic concepts, because it is unique and uncommon these days, so I love this.
I’ve been casually listening to WJSN since boogie up and I’ve decided to stan them after Unnatural. This more mature retro concept that has been trending in kpop is the exact style of music I adore I could never get tired of listening to it. Unnatural sounds like it could be something that maybe Lovelyz would comeback with after their concept change
If all you are looking for are simple Kpop hooks then WJSN is not the group for you. Their music is more complex, the girls can actually sing. and the rapper slays.
I love the second track, I hope they promoted it because it is a great, dance-able song (even tho it's not as less magical and bubble as the third or the fourth track). I really hoping - and this is coming from an outsider
i loved the song! but i still miss the magical concept ... maybe another gg will take over it soon or smth !! EDIT: i also have mixed feelings about the mv...nothing was really visually interesting to me at all...
Honestly I don't think starship is giving enough attention to wjsn they're almost on a once a year comeback level this year and starship seem like they"re more involved in their bgs and they're probably going to debut a new gg so I hope they won't give up on wjsn
it's okay to blame starship, starship has really been slacking as a company recently. they have some of the most talented artists under their belt and they constantly underfund them and don't let them display their fullest potential. starship also has a history of giving their girlgroups less than their boygroups. for instance, monsta x is overworked, hardly even given a break, while wjsn is under promoted and have joked about not having any work to do. historically they also do this when they debut a new group, so since cravity has debuted their funding has gotten split a little more. they have a tendency to invest more money in their newer groups than their older groups. the same thing happened with sistar when monsta x debuted. as a starship artist fan, it really is glaringly obvious how differently starship treats their male artists versus their female artists. and as a monbebe and an ujung I truly want best for both of my groups and I hope starship can work out their difficulties and give both artists what they deserve.
I wouldn’t say their sound has changed too dramatically album wise, their title tracks however have seen a complete shift in focus. Their sound with their bsides has matured while maintaining the signature sound that they’ve had, but their title tracks have shifted a little too much even though I love the recent songs. I have to agree with the music video situation though, it feels oversimplified while also trying to do to much and not really hitting the mark and I do feel like it’s them being underfunded and unfortunately I believe its related to their old concept underselling.
i honestly think the videos are blending together because of C0VID....many companies are very limited with the ways they could film mvs and not everyone can use crazy realistic graphics (like SM does for example). you can really notice everyone is just running out of ideas of what to film in the studios and locations they have available for safely filming. i hope it will change once the pandemic is over and safety regulations are not as strict and the staff on set won't be limited and etc.
I don't really mind the change and I personally really liked Butterfly and its simple MV, for me it fits well, but this comeback I feel like the MV doesn't really compliment the song... Love the song, the vocals, it's very big, elegant and charming, but the MV is underwhelming... It's been quite some time since their last comeback so I was expecting something more? The MV focused a lot on dancing and like... their eyes? Every few seconds there's a shot from their eyes i- I'm a recent fan and for me Secret it's just SO good it just embraces the group initial concept so well. Again, I don't mind changes, but I would like changes for the better at least :/
I know I’m late but I’ve been a fan since debut, and honestly I am so happy with the direction they’ve taken. Their albums having honestly gotten better and better every time. I still think their music is magical, with production that I am just in love with. I feel them coming more into themselves!
I think as a UJUNG I really like this change for WJSN. They’re a 5 year old group and I think it’s time for some change just like Apink did. It’s true Butterfly was very low budget and I didn’t like it as much but I think their b-sides showcase how great wjsn are. I do agree with the chorus needing a little bit more, and the mv not being the best but it’s the best with what we can work with right now as they’re shifting to a new concept and not that much “magical” anymore. But nevertheless I enjoyed it so much.!
so the thing about wjsn is that its not just starship that their under but also yuehua as well. and through rumors ive seen yuehua announced that they will no longer be supporting startship and severing all ties. yuehua is a rich company and theyve been supporting wjsn most of the groups career but considering mei qi, xuan yi, and cheng xiao didnt return to the group after the rocket girls promotion ended last year i feel it safe to assume that changes were already happening by the release of butterfly, hence why the change in mv quality and even their stage outfits seemed low budget. just a feeling but i assume that by loosing their financial backing starship decided to start these changes to that wjsn fits whats trending to make $$$. its very sad cus on one end alot of fans have brought up the girls wanting to change their image but on the other they always have positive things to say about their music so its hard to really know whats the right thing to feel. as a fan myself i do enjoy thier new sound but i wish the mv were as magical and plot driven as b4. also the album sales werent as high as butterflys for the first day sales so it really does seem like the fandom has mixed feelings about the changes happening. i think starship should start using the money wjsn earned for the group instead of putting other projects ahead of them like debuting a new boy group and rumored girl group, and invest in proper mvs and stage outfits and promote them better like they did in previous comebacks. they should also make official announcement of whats happenings with china line. starship is critisized amongst k-netz as being a label that doesnt listen to fans.
I just noticed that the songs were slowly getting more and more different from the cosmic and magical feel they were known for by the time they were utilizing more of the other members’s voices. I mean, they all of them has such good vocals, but the recent song choices ain’t doing it for me. 🥺 But man, you can’t deny they all look so stunning in the MV, the girls are still being styled with care and on point 🥺✨😭💕
honestly i kind of agree with what you mean. Secret, Dreams Come True, Save Me Save You, La La Love, and As You Wish definitely gave off a more magical vibe which was definitely their selling point. Honestly i wouldn’t be surprised if more gg’s start transitioning like this, Twice already did, i feel like Oh My Girl will follow that train next but we have to see since it’s been a while since a comeback, fromis_9’s feel good was vastly different than what they usually do, and some other misc. examples. And i see what you mean with the underfunding, comparing this music video to La La Love and Save Me Save You it’s a lot different. I don’t know if it’s an issue with selling because I think they’re doing well in korea and have a large fan base in china, but just a matter of the company playing follow the leader. I rly liked the song and to me Butterfly wasn’t bad, but i would be lying if i said these songs gave me the same feels as their other majestical title tracks
as a ujung, i can't agree more, the funniest point is even some of you are not ujung, you guys still find out that starship doesn't try to give them more resources, WJSN deserve more than it. the song is great, but not the music video. Also, starship seems doesn't even care about the teaser and the hidden films, they are short and sloppy. anyway thanks for studying UNNATURAL! :D
i don't know but something about wjsns music hits different. they've got a strangely distinct sound. only way i can describe it is like,,, g r o o v y?? I can't words.
i really do hope they come back to their magical/cosmic concept T_T i love unnatural but i do feel like their magical concept is what set them apart from other ggs. their newest music videos are very simple compared to secret, save me save you, etc... starship please don't do this to my girls 💔
This transition from cute to girl crush is such a good choice IMO. They're growing and becoming women as time goes by so there's only so much cute you can do before it becomes cringe! This is such a good call and I'm sure they'll bloom into this concept very well! Looking forward to The Black! This music video was the first song from them. But I went back and saw all their music videos, the variety shows everything! Stanned so hard! The only issue with this group is trying to choose a bias! They all wreck!
I don't stan WJSN but I absolutely love La la love and I don't think unnatural sounds very different. It's a bit more mature but still fits. It's not too much of a switch up
Hmm, I feel like they're changing their sound because their traditional sound was too niche. Need to remember their first win ( by memory... ) was "Save me, save you." And the song that blew them up was "Boogie up" and since then they've been going for a more modern feel.... That's what I think anyway. Like this song to me gives me major IZ*ONE vibes, same for the MV while still being a WJSN song. I love it personally!
Well I guess maintaining a gigantic group like WJSN is complicated, I agree that the song is good and the video is okay, but the album is amazing, if you liked Neverland (I loved it too) also give this album a shot, I still can't decide if Unnatural (album) is better than Neverland but I do like them both, WJSN has been on point with their b-sides for a while, their music is fantastic
Kinda agree with PD since when I first listen I feel the Izone vibe. It's really catchy but it's kinda remind me of other group instead of WJSN. The pre-chorus is so gooooood though.
As someone who listens to bsides i'm fine with them evolving their sound if they still include their previous sound in bsides and this album doesn't disappoint. Also i disagree with this concept and sound being popular, Apink has 1 comeback a year and they who knows if they renew in the future, Iz*one is disbanding and some groups are closer in the direction but i don't think any other groups is in this specific sound.
why should it have taken so LONG for Dawon to get acknowledged for her value? do you guys really think it was natural for her to be treated like the way she was treated for like several years right after yeonjung’s join? she was a main-vocalist in this team and she STILL IS. is it really fair to give all the lines of the hooks and high notes to yeonjung even when there are still other members who ARE main-vocalists? more insane thing is that, at the same time, visual members who have zero talents for singing especially like luda, bona, eunseo had more lines than dawon for a very long time. is this right? even for soobin and dayoung, they were treated almost the same with dawon. and they are also main vocalist for the team. for almost every comeback, like ‘as you wish’, ‘wj please?’, ‘lala love’ ‘dream your dream’, dawon sang less than bona, luda with no reasonable reason. before this comeback yeonjung has been taken almost 1/3 of every title track when dawon always sang almost the least.
Hey great reviewer PD 😊 How are you? 😊 Thanks for ALL reactions!! DO NOT miss your favourite ROOKIES : *MCND - NOT OVER* !! ** Its the B-SIDE of CRUSH ( like SPRING was of ICE AGE!!) 👍 Thanks in advance!! Take care! And stay HEALTHY 🌷🌸JOERI 🇳🇱 - PS : HAPPY EASTER 🐰🐰🐰
Song is fine, mv is fine. Nothing is bad, but nothing stood out to me either. It's one of those songs once you know where it goes, you start to appreciate it more. MV is alright, kinda average but got couple cool shots and editing mixed into it. Is this their best come back? maybe not. But did I enjoy it? yes I did.
The song was amazingg!! The pre-chorus was soo lit it was the type of music I was looking for! WJSN keeps stepping up their music, especially the fact that their bsides have a really unique music. Starship is really lowering their budget, they really suck. “As you wish” was their last high budget music video in my opinion, the mv directors that are being assigned to wjsn are kinda plain now. Their music videos since like Butterfly(?) is really lacking with the unique it’s being edited effortlessly which is really unfair to the girls but the aesthetic is really good but the man where’s the effects and everything???
i'm early for a change, but i appreciate your content so much PD! thanks for your genuine reactions and for being someone that actually dissects into the whole production. i needed this 😩💓💕
to me butterfly song wise to me still felt like their style. (im not musical at all so maybe i just dont hear it lol). but this is different yes. im still getting used to it. but im super happy with the line distribution so thats a big +
And btw I didn't also like butterfly a lot at first but it grew on me A LOT and that era, Nevetland, the concept and BUTTERFLY turned me into an Ujung and I really think it's the type of song EVERYONE should give another chance to, I'm 100% sure you'd understand how AMAZING the song is after several listens!
I know a lot of people are saying it was time for them to change their concept or that they needed to for sales. but as a fan, I don't think they needed to ditch the magical/whimsical/cosmic feel to do that. although they didn't always have the best sales, gugudan is an example of a group that changed their concept a LOT and still kept a magical/fantastical feel to it (Unnatural could have been to WJSN what The Boots was to gugudan!!). and if they were worried about sales, this mv is pretty boring and indistinguishable from stuff other ggs (and even bgs) are putting out. this sort of vogue concept is so oversatured that I don't think it'll help with sales. in a market with ggs like ITZY, IZ*ONE, Weeekly and STAYC plus some of the concepts ggs like TWICE and GFRIEND are putting out, it's just not an interesting concept for a good song.
Although I really love and miss the “magic” era of WJSN such as Secret, Dreams Come True, etc., at the same time I was always hoping they would do a more mature concept because I know they can really pull it off! So because of that this is definitely up there as one of my favorites. I’m excited to see what they do next and i don’t mind the change!
you have to react to pentagon’s do or not, it’s SO good, jinho isn’t in it bc he’s doing military training right now. but the theme seems 80’s to me but also present time, they have this one scene and it’s SO good. and i know you’ll love it. also hui left for the military soon after they filmed the music video.
I love the song, but I do kinda miss their Cosmic Magical concept, it's what makes them stand out. But I also think it's good that they can do something different, because I woudn't want to be robbed of this song, it's amazing. Maybe next comeback will be in their usual concept. However I still think this comeback has more potential to top charts than with their cosmic one, so..
In their last minialbum, only the b-side tracks have their signature sound. And in this minialbum, in my opinion, none of them have their signature sound. Is the album sounds good? Yes! Am I worry WJSN would leave their signature sound? Yes too...
