The KZ is Back!! (KZ650: From Hate To Pure Love - Part 2) 

The carbs may be bench synced with the throttle slides open too far. I followed the internet instructions to bench sync mine using a 1/4 inch drill bit (people were saying 1/4 to 3/8) and it just revved right on up to about 6,000 rpm and no amount of fiddling with the idle adjustment would fix it. I pulled them back off and bench synced with a 2.5 mm allen key and then it idled too low, which was awesome because that meant the idle adjustment screw would actually do something. I also found that a couple of the vacuum plugs on the intake boots were missing, which meant almost the whole first season I was riding it almost always on the choke. I knew the carbs needed going through but I just didn't want to do it. Honestly though, once I stopped bitching out and just did them it really wasn't bad at all. I have a 1981 KZ650H CSR. I replaced the spoked wheels with mag wheels off of a KZ750 (spokes were crusty and I didn't want to spend hours scrubbing and sanding and polishing ~150 little wires), which meant changing the swing arm to allow for the rear disk brake that the 750 wheels were set up for. I can't wait to see more on your bike, there doesn't seem to be many people on youtube featuring these machines. Maybe I should shoot a few videos on mine? fun to follow along. I have a b1 engine in a b3 frame and have gone through many of the same things you have so far (fuses, rich pops, carbs on and off, elec ignition swap). I currently have a vacuum leak that shows up when the engine gets to temp, which also gives me high idle. Good luck!

Would be great to find the ultimate 'sort all your carb problems' solution on here at some point. I have been contemplating swapping for carbs from a different bike altogether , maybe a more modern one. The fact is these originals always seem to have issues. Everything goes so much better when you get them synced up on the running motor with a set of vacuum gauges. I have a few both KZ650 and KZ750 and when the run well they are lovely, but it has been ages and they all sit in the garage waiting to be loved again.
