December, 1989-February, 1990
Eden Studios, London, UK
Band Members: Lee Mavers (guitar, vocals), John Power (bass), Peter 'Cammy' Camell (guitar) & Neil Mavers (drums)
Producers: Steve Lillywhite & Mark Wallis
Engineers: Mark Wallis, Dave Charles & Donal Hodgson
THE LA'S recording their album, highlights from the first session. The band did each song several times in a row; I've selected and assembled the standouts here in the order performed (Lee Mavers; tracklist for the album was not the same as the label's).
Yes, there's songs missing, but the rest of the Eden sessions remain hidden. I'd do them justice.

I've said this before but I used to go and see The La's around Liverpool over 3-4 years and their sound was always incredible. That Lillywhite album is unlistenable to me. He just didn't get them. God bless Tone Garvey for giving us all a better idea of what they really sounded like.

Yeah I'm with you and in a similar boat with Joy Division. Martin Hannett really ruined JDs sound with his krautrock bullshit imo. Listening to them on live recordings you can tell that's how they were supposed to sound. Not some top of the pops shite.

@@brianj4201Agree. Its one thing for a producer to work WITH a band to expand their sound. But not cool to impose a sound on the band. But the La's. is it better to have a flawed album or no album? LM was unhappy w Hedges and Leckie and Porter, etc. so I doubt anyone would satisfy him.

Been a La’s fan since 1990, and saw them play life-changing gigs ( for me at least) at Nottingham Trent Poly, Manchester Academy, Manchester Uni, and Leeds Elland Road ( Supporting the Happy Mondays). When I bought the LP ( on tape, couldn’t afford the CD) I loved the clean clarity of it, but was underwhelmed by the missing elements ; I.e. The kick n snap of Lee’s brilliant acoustic rhythm guitar, the rawness of his vocals live.. The growl of John’s bass ( and his backing vocals) and the blistering power and snap of the lead guitar and the drums on tunes like I can’t sleep, timeless melody and failure. Plus all the other songs they played live like Callin All and Jack in a Box , Mind Blowing band.

I’ve been listening to them none stop this year, I completely agree with you on the demos. There’s a roughness to them that’s just absolutely something else. I’m listening to the demos and alternative recordings more now, I’d have given anything to have seen them live but it was before my time. You’re incredibly lucky to have been there. I’m just grateful to have come across them.

They were a Fantastic live band in 1989-91.. amazing to my young ears .. they came across as very real, very true.. as good as the Beatles ( Rubber Soul / Revolver era) possibly?! As good as the early Kinks and The Who. Maximum Rattle n Roll! Lee Mavers had the world at his feet.. and the demos are a fantastic document.. 👌🏼🎶

Is this the raw Steve Lillywhite sessions? If it is, then it’s so much closer to what Lee wanted. Before all the archive material was released, and all your great work on your channel, nobody had anything to compare the official album to and we only had Lee’s word of what was wrong with that record label approved version of the album. The media and the “business” tried (and to a certain extent succeeded) in painting Lee as an extreme perfectionist/eccentric character. Now me and many others realize that Lee was correct and not “mad”. I have most of the archive releases and have assembled playlists of alternative versions of the album for my own personal enjoyment and for friends that are easily superior to what was officially released. Lee can rest assured that history has proven him correct. Is it any wonder Lee doesn’t want to release anything new, he just doesn’t want the hassle - and I don’t blame him.

This is interesting to listen to, but I still prefer the released LP. I think some people are a bit in love with the romance of the demos being covered in sixties dust. It's not as if the Go Discs album had Trevor Horn production on it.
@ToneLa
@ToneLa 2 года назад
Worse voices though, and I don't know how you get the album Doledrum from this sizzling take... it's a good LP, and this isn't to "compete" with it - I like both! - but interesting to see the differences if you're interested in why Lee wasn't taken with the LP.

It's strange how Way out sounds differently on the album version. The version here is more like the 1987 versions or (more) like the Hedges version.
@ToneLa
@ToneLa 6 лет назад
Yeah, you can tell Lillywhite's mixing changes a lot. Doledrum too... the bass here sounds amazing, but almost not in tune on the album? Plus the backing vocals are from the Hedges session - Lillywhite used that to fill in any gaps, which might explain a lot. I love Way Out here, I used a take where they're playing INTO it, it's the warmest take available...

@@ToneLa the whole story of The La's drives me insane. The potential they had.... It's such a tragedy. There should be 5 La's albums - each with different songs on them! 🤣 I don't get why Lee hasn't done anything since his record contract expired. Surely he can record and release music exactly how he wants to, but yet, nothing.

I Can't Sleep : Electric guitars sounded more organic and sibilant, and that growl of a bass guitar...! Too bad that the final mix came out in a way that infuriates Lee and his co.
@matthewjdouglas6471
@matthewjdouglas6471 3 года назад
It must have really affected Lee. He Could have recorded a second album. He had the songs but he didn't. We will never know the real reason. Maybe because of how dissatisfied he was with the debuts final mix. Shame I love it. It doesn't sound as good as his live versions but I still classic rocknroll record.
