This feels like something I heard about recently in a manga. Of course, in that instance, the offending man was someone who was born royal and renounced his status, and the other woman is a thief with no social inheritance to speak of. Pudding, Nami, and Sanji... Nami would send Sanji to the tiger for hurting her, and their fellow crew mates, with his sudden leave of absence and his "hurt them to save them" logic when they came to find him. But could Pudding give Sanji to the lady, knowing that she would never see him again? I guess it depends on which woman is making the choice... as for the semi-barbaric princess, she chose the tiger. "If I can't have you in life, I will see you in death."

Wow. I hadn't thought of this story since about the 70's! I always thought, and still do, that it was the tiger. And now, has he narrated the sort of follow-up (a different man) of whether it was the lady who smiled, or the lady who frowned? "The Discourager of Hesitancy."

It probably was the lady. The reason? The princess may have pointed to the door leading to her, expecting her lover to open the opposite door (the one leading to the tiger).
