It predicted a feminism allied with sexual conservatism.

"Battle of the sexes" really isn't even good as a metaphor. Men and women constitute a natural system with their interests basically the same. The film is less about "feminism" than it is about a dogmatic abstinence.

@@denisenoe3702 I can't see the word "feminism" in my comment and I certainly do not recall any feminist stance in THE LADY SAYS NO. Thankfully, David Niven's polished performance with the ladies - in real life and in the movies - gives a good image to the male, while Caulfield rates eye candy and has a ready answer to Niven's moves. The lady says no is a fitting title and the film good fun!

@@adrianovasconcelos2739 No, you didn't use the word but several reviewers call it "feminist" or "porto-feminist." It was really about abstinence. I think David Niven, an accomplished actor, was miscast in this film. He just looks too old for the part. He also sometimes seems bored. They needed a handsome young hunk to play the photographer. Joan Caulfield is indeed eye candy.

Watch the 1960s original Pink Panther film with David Niven. He did a few very funny physical scenes in that film.

This mediocre film is important for the sorts of wrong predictions it made. It actually makes good sense that "feminism" would ally with sexual conservatism and an abstinence message. But the feminism that emerged in the 1970s was to some degree hijacked by sexual "liberation" and had the opposite message to "The Lady Says No." The contrast between what the film thought a feminist movement would look like and what it did look like is valuable.

I agree with you about Joan Caulfield. I actually watched the movie for Peggy Maley who plays Midge. Maley is also lovely and a fine actress as well. There's a bit of a problem with the casting of David Niven. He really seemed a bit too old and tired for his role. His acting veers with it sometimes seeming he is bored with the project.

There used to be an old couple in the neighborhood back in the day (1980s) that had his and her matching cream-colored 1951Chevy Belair convertibles with red interiors. I drooled each time the garage door was raised. They bought them new that year... the year they were married.

It may sound silly but when I was a kid that was the alphabet song's tune!!! :):):)

Women's Lib. Otherwise known as Women's Liberation. The fateful year was 1968 in the USA. Women burned their bras in the streets. Fashions changed b/c women had won equal rights, meaning the same rights as men. So women went to work 40 hrs/wk, thus had no time to iron, have fancy hair-dos, women had to dress more like men to be taken seriously by their bosses. Also dressing more masculine meant women would be more likely to stave off sexual harassment. Also to fit in better in a man's world, women dressed more masculine. No more femininity. Nothing feminine must remain: dresses were replaced by the pant suit. No more feminine hats, gloves, purses, belts & ruffles, lace, shaws, stoles (fur or otherwise), colors, full skirted dresses, etc. The only things that remained, only occasionally, were hosiery & high heels. Women wanted to change their images completely & the female Hippies helped the previously conservative woman to break out of her feminine "shell." Also, the 1970s economy plunged into inflation so there went the expensive jewelry. Notice in this movie that the leading lady even wore several gold & diamond barrettes in her hair. Now women get tattoos to be just as masculine as men. No wonder there's such identity crises & unhappiness with oneself now. The fateful year was 1968....

David Niven had lot of comedies done and done well. Wtf are you smoking with your breakfast kipper!?

RW --- Many of the stars at that time had seen the rougher side of life and truly appreciated how lucky they were to be making money and living in California when it was the golden state.

Actually, they DIDN'T drive safely, which was why things like lap belts, shoulder belts, and safety glass became law.

Cars were a lot slower then.

@@bradmiller2329 Actually what happened is that the insurance industry found out that if the person was trapped in the car they usually died instead of costing them millions of dollars in reconstructive surgery and this is why they lobbied our laws to change it so now they no longer have to pay if you don't have your seat belt on has nothing to do with any safety at all.

@@sandrastanislav2656 Sadly, I have no trouble believing that! But it raises the question -- with the "new" car laws, (ultralight build to get the required MPG) -- if you are wearing your belt, and still get mangled, how will that affect the insurnace companies?

@Cat Magic there are several examples of how dance was interpreted as done by white people and black people. Now the black woman here at the time was really regarded as rather clownish with her dance, while yes, the star, Joan Caufield, was supposed to be alluringly seductive and sexy. Just breaking all the taboos. And that is about the best place to begin; with Come Back Little Sheba, where Shirley Booth is listening to the radio station, Taboo, and all of it's dark, forbidden music. Basically the music seen here in the dream. "Crazy Legs" Rowena is also uploaded here where she appeared on You Bet Your LIfe and does an absolutely hideous gyration that was supposed to be a dance craze, I'm sure, but no way could anyone do that for a good year, tops, and I guess it is a safe bet you never saw a black person doing that. And God's honest truth, it reminded me of the dances cartoon characters used to do around that time. I thought to myself, huh, it was a real dance. One bit I always found too funny, and I haven't seen the movie after one viewing, was Doris Day in Teacher's Pet singing "I'm the Girl Who Invented Rock and Roll". First off, it was hardly a 'hound-dog, crockin' song, but it was supposed to make her come across as an incredibly daring woman, way too bold and sassy for any man to control. She would have been better off going for Que sera sera. When the white women behaved like this, they were shocking, "well, I never!" stuff, supposed to upset granma. And be all the more enticing for the guys wanting that bad girl. Such was the case here with Caufield. This was supposed to 'launch' her as a star, but obviously that never happened.

Niven was miscast. A younger actor was needed to show the feminist-abstinence teacher the error of her ways.

I also wondered who that lady was. She is not credited so her name is apparently lost to us.

The film is important precisely because it predicted a feminism allied with sexual abstinence. The premise if more than a bit outlandish as no book promoting abstinence would become a runaway best-seller nor would women en mass adopt celibacy just because an author pushed it. Another way the film was off is that it predicted a feminist movement composed of stout hair-in-a-bun cat ladies who stay home and knit when they aren't advising women to Just Say Not.

Yeah I think that was supposed to be comedic but no one is going to actually do those things. Plus, if a guy catcalled me (which is a form of harrassment and should never be seen as a compliment) I'd sooner say something to show I'm not interested. But if he then gets in my bubble like this guy does and tries to touch me, he will get hurt!

It is a poor movie of historical significance because it predicted a feminism opposite the one that actually came into existence.

@@davidparker2173 The predicted feminism was a pro-abstinence, sexually conservative feminism. This makes sense! Women who fear or hate men should, naturally enough, keep them at a distance. However, 1970s feminism was in the wake of The Pill and Masters and Johnson's "discoveries" of female greater sexual capacity. I put discoveries in quotes because it was known in ancient Greece and known to any teen girl who spends a lot of time in her room. But this caused an link between feminism and sexual "liberation."
