Hello Keith. Those Garlic, you harvested, are beautiful. Uniform, no splits, and all large. One couldn't ask for more. How many cloves per bulb did you average? Will you be selling any rounds, or are they the cloves you will plant in 24, for 2025 harvest? You're on your way my Friend. Onward.
@growingoutthebox
@growingoutthebox 9 месяцев назад
Good morning my friend Mark. Thank you for questions as always. It really helps me stay focus on the task at hand. I'm going to give you the exacts as I scribbled down some before and after. I am having my sister put them into a spreadsheet so I can force myself to stay on task. I planted 2 beds separated by the larger and smaller cloves on average. My focus was mainly the larger 56 but to my surprise the smaller bed grew bulbs the size of my original large bed cloves. So that is a promising sign. The average clove from start was about 20g. My average harvest in the large bed was a whopping 28g. The largest clove being 62g! Largest bulb was 181g. Average harvest about 160. Most bulbs were 4 cloves. I need to go back and count again but I had 17 true rounds, 6 split and formed smaller rounds so I'm treating them as large cloves. 7 duds. Overall 112 cloves planted I got 100 super cloves and if my math is correct about 256 cloves in the size range of the initial purchase. I didn't even count the corms but I would guess somewhere around 500 collected and no telling how many still in the beds because they are starting to pop up at random. I have a little bit better idea of what I am doing now so I will do a better accounting this planting. Thanks again for asking the questions that keep me on track.

@@growingouttheboxThis sounds like 1 clove in, 4 in return. (not counting corms) 100 held back, 300 to sell. But leaves you with same result year after year. However, 1 clove planted, 4 in return, 2 held back, 200 to replant, 800 in return. about 4 raised beds, hold back 400 Just one more 400 planted, 1600 in return, hold back 800, yields 3200 in return. 2400 to sell, 800 divided by 56=14 beds. 14, 8' long beds = 112' of beds, without spacing. (still not including corms) Beyond here, the numbers just get nuts. Especially drying/curing racks enough to hold 3200 plants/bulbs.. To me, that's the largest stumbling block. On a good note your seed/cloves are free from this point forward. I think you mentioned a friend you have down there that you could bounce this off from, that's forgotten more on this subject than I'll ever know. I love gardening and numbers, so, I'm loving this adventure you're on and can't wait to follow you on this journey. Until you "Grow Out the Box" you'll never know. Mark n Rosa

@@marktoldgardengnome4110 You see Mark, you just opened up a lot of thought to future plantings and harvest. I have been to focussed on building inventory. Looking at your 2nd projection of holding back 2 cloves for every 1 clove planted sounds like a plan. Now I'm thinking of the 2 for 1 and listing them next season after curing to start building a presence in the market. I would rather sell out as opposed to having too much inventory. With an average of 500 corms and 100 huge cloves I could sell anything over 200 using the 200 as the base line and gauge how the demand is. Year 2 the corms alone will have developed which potentially is 2,000 cloves in 2025. next years harvest video has to be epic. That's all the marketing I would need and I could have them available in the RU-vid store. My subscribers have really grown. From 1,300 a few months ago to 41,000 and counting. @growingoutthebox 9 месяцев назад
Good morning. The height of the planters I would say needs to be at least 10 inches for garlic. All my raised beds are open bottom to allow the soil biology to work it's best. Closing the bottoms of cuts of the natural nutrient cycle causing you to need to water more and fertilize more in my opinion. if that is what you have I say do it the bestway you can because I encourage anyone to grow no matter how they do it. We tend to learn what works best for us as we grow. I hope you are having a great day.

@growingoutthebox

As you see at the end of this video I do a layer of mulch after planting. Regardless of what anyone will tell you I’ve showed how I do it. Garlic comes up as shoots/firm points. They will push through the mulch. Further, corms are forgotten and where I grew garlic last year already has volunteer garlic growing and they too came up through the cypress mulch I use in all my beds. Just lightly cover the soil until they come through.

Hey Honeybee. Personally I think it's late in the season to add worms to a bed and definitely not a bed growing onion or garlic. When garlic is metabolized in the body, it becomes alkaline-forming due to its high content of sulfur-containing compounds such as allicin. The plant in its raw form is slightly acidic. Worms don't particularly care for acidity. I would create a nice home for them in a garage over the winter and introduce them into the garden in the spring. This is one of the reasons I add worm casting to my garlic beds and not rely on the worms.

@@growingoutthebox ok. Well, when i pick up the cypress mulch from ACE Hardware Friday. I can just layer the mulch over pine bark nuggets. I the nuggets is not enough. I have a bag of worm casting in my garage i ordered from drip depot over 3 to for year ago when i was living in the apartment. I knew one day i would move. I 'm wondering if it too late to Add the castings now since garlic is planted. It's a lot to gardening. I just started trying to grow. They are all going to be in pots till i get that fence build😊

I am going to find one of those warer containers you for water. The guys thisvyearvthat cut the grass push a lots of the leaves back against wood line. I told them i was going to make some kind of compost pile but to buy a bin, i guess. Eventually, i want to learning to make your compost tea as well. Thank you for teaching 😊

I just went out to water the garlic and the soft neck garlic is u p by 2 or 3 inches. I am happy but winter is not here yet. I don' knw what to do. The 20 gallon pot with hard neck is no up yet. For the soft neck do cover mulch around the soft? What start freezing in the next 2 weeks? It is warm today up in 70's but will go do around 4 or 5 o'clock.😢🤔 thanks!

@@honeybee6674 That’s a good thing. Mulch around what you can see. The cold will knock the green off but they will bounce back in the spring. Give them 1 feeding of the fish emulsion and again when they emerge in spring. The hard neck will give you scapes in the summer. That tells you they are maybe 4 to 6 weeks from harvest. Fertilizer with the fish emulsion for the last till and back off watering. That’s it. You got it! 🫵🏽

If you have just planted them I would water with a fish emulsion. When they emerge in spring water again with fish emulsion and about 6 weeks before harvest water again with fish emulsion. From this point no more water. You want them dry when harvesting.

@@honeybee6674 Be careful with the potassium it can throw your soil off. Nitrogen is more likely the thing low in your soil. It gets used up faster than phosphorus and potassium barley is used by most plants so it stays in the soil longer.

November and December for the onion. They grow over the winter until they're ready to harvest in mid-April. The potato likes cool weather but not frost. You can try growing the potatoes inside this winter.

Earthworms are some of the best beneficials to have in your garden. They are excellent in nutrient cycling if you are aspiring to be an organic gardener. I love seeing them in the garden.
