The Sahara is the biggest desert on earth. It takes its name from the Arab word for "emptiness". In the dead heart of that emptiness there's a place called the Tenere. The Tenere takes its name from the Tuareg word for "nothing". A nothing the size of France in the middle of an emptiness the size of the United States. It's no wonder the locals call this place "The Land Of Fear”. David Adams retraces the trade routes of the people who call this stove-hot corner of the planet home.
TRACKS publishes unique, unexpected and untold stories from across the world every week.

Thank you for dropping this terrific documentary into my lap. Decades ago I had the good fortune to spend a few months in Iferoune and visited all surrounding areas in this docu, and even into the Tenere.....for about an hour. A friend and I trekked into the Air mtns for 2 weeks with mules, a cook, and a couple of fleet footed guides wearing plastic Chinese sandals, and all the memories are now flooding my senses. Families with goats live in the mtns, so meat, and cheese is always available. Never pass up an opportunity to experience the power of the desert and to spend time with these special people. Don’t forget your camera.

They're gone because unlike the Australian government, the US government wasn't stupid enough to believe they would just starve and disappear, as such, they were hunted and disposed of, as the government knew they'd be a problem for the natural environment later on... Here in Australia, there are about 1,000,000 dromedary camels roaming our desert area, and just like the feral wild horses (named 'brumbies' by bogan fkhead stockman who love a free supply of horses) that the government refuses to shoot and dispose of, they cause havok on the landscape...

A realistic experience of visiting the desert, the tourege and the cultures. Certainly I felt my bookish knowledge of the region got boosted up. Thanks for the video and expect more.

It is a known fact that tuaregs are old inhabitants of the same land, part of the Berber or amazigh family, since the days the Sahara was lush green and Europe was covered with 1 mile thick sheet of ice. many thousands of years before Judaism existed, before Christianity, before Islam. And when the Sahara weather went dry (about 6000 years ago), many concentrated around water points like the Nile where they gave birth to the Egyptian civilization born. Some remained and adapted to the harsh living conditions of a dry land, your hosts today are their descendants.
