The last 2 BA 747s depart from Heathrow.

Heathrow Aircraft - past and present.

8th October 2020. Dark grey skies; a dismal wet and windy Heathrow - perhaps a fitting ending marking the final 2 British Airways 747s to leave Heathrow Airport. What a contrast to the bright sunny day in July 1989 when the first 2 747-400s were delivered brand new to BA; G-BNLA and BNLC.
Here is a film then of both events - the last 2 747s to leave; G-CIVY as flight BA 747 (bound for St Athan Wales, almost certainly for scrap) and G-CIVB as flight BA 400; heading for Kemble Cotswolds (hopefully) for preservation; PLUS a look back at the first 2 747s delivered to BA in 1989 (I remember it well!)
Today at Heathrow, the wind was gusting quite strongly and the rain did nothing to improve visibility - resulting in both 747s disappearing into the overcast remarkably quickly.
G-CIVY flew a circuit around the Airport and came back for a missed approach (flypast), which was quite a poignant sight.
The Air Traffic Control Comms are all captured- including the farewell signoff by the crew on board G-CIVY; the last BA 747 to fly from or over Heathrow.
So enjoy the end and look back with nostalgia at the "3 minute" film within the film; showing the shiny new 747-400s arriving at Heathrow, landing simultaneously.
As Lord King, Chairman of British Airways at the time the new aircraft were delivered says about the 747-400 in the film I've included:
"It's as good as you can get; I suppose one day they'll make something better - but that's it at the moment".....how true are those words....

British Airways 747-400, thanks for changing my life forever. Thank you for gracing our skies for 50 years and giving us safe and reliable and comfortable service. Few can truly epitomize the spirit of Britain as you’ve done. I will miss you terribly, old friend. But the memories I’ve had with you will last for a lifetime. From the times I’ve watched you from Terminal 4 (former BA home), to the times I’ve flown on you around the word, it’s always been enjoyable. And thank you, British Airways, for taking care of her majesty for several years. All hail the Queen, long live the Queen.

IVB struggled to get into Kemble but I have to say the pilots made a beautiful landing in IVB 👏👏👌 with what looked like max reverse thrust. Very nice!! I just cannot believe I will never see and hear anymore BA 747 400s @ LHR. IT REALLY FEELS LIKE A BIG LOSS TO AVIATION IM JUST VERY SAD BY IT ALL!! Never ever thought the day would come!! The early 747's (G-AWNA to G-AWNF) were a bit unreliable; every trip could be a mystery tour...once the Pratt & Witney's were replaced with glorious Rolls Royce engines...the world was our lobster...and caviar, and lots of champagne. Good days.

@Lorraine Bellami. G-AWNA was the first 747 that I flew on after I joined BA in 1988. I think I just caught the best days before things changed irrevocably - and i suspect for you as crew too, those were the golden times.....

Nice of the Crew to make the gesture of thanking Heathrow NATS staff for their help over the years. And what a shame it wasn't reciprocated by the ATCO working them. Obviously it didnt mean as much to the new generation as it does to us old times.
@HeathrowAircraft
@HeathrowAircraft 3 года назад
@Jason Brown - yes it was a poignant moment wasn’t it. I guess to be fair, we did hear ATC saying a heartfelt goodbye when the first 747 left back in August. I think they released the conversation online. But yes I do get what you mean, a small reply yesterday would have been fitting ....

@lernard mays. There was a good turn out from BA cabin staff at the send off. They were standing next to me when I was filming. You can hear their clapping after the takeoff .... they had drinks and selfies afterwards. Did the send off in style!

That was great that some crew cabin members came out to see the retirement if this beautiful 747. Just nice!!! I did not see the last United Airlines 747s retirement. I loved flying o them so much. I miss sitting at Door 211A and looking out the door window and serving the left wing take on the air and lift us!!! Having to be former Purser Flight Attendant has been nice for me. So, yes I would fly with 14 to 16 Flights Attendants on the long haul flights. Thanks.

A sad day indeed. I will no longer see these birds stacking up on Saturday morning waiting to go into Heathrow. Can't we raise enough money in the aviation lovers world to get one of the new fleet painted in retro colors ? I for one would contribute to see a 777 in Landor or BOAC color scheme. 🙏

I used to live about a mile from the South end of the runways at DFW in Irving. Every evening around 6:45pm if there was a Southern wind, without a doubt my apartment would vibrate with the sound of those Rolls Royce engines powering the BA 747 from Dallas to Heathrow. Not sure why, but the BA jumbos seemed to have a more shallow climb angle than the United or Lufthansa jumbos. Made for a great sight if you were outside to see it.
@HeathrowAircraft
@HeathrowAircraft 3 года назад
@emwungarand. Great! They had such a distinctive sound with the Rolls Royce engines didn’t they; you couldn’t mistake them. Very sad that we won’t hear that again either at DFW; Heathrow or anywhere else. Definitely the end of an era....

@Bangalore Aviation. Yes I think you’re right there. I guess to be fair, they did say a goodbye on behalf of ATC for the first of the 747s that left in August - G-CIVD. If you look up “Mr Flashjet - The Heathrow airport archive” on RU-vid he has the ATC commentary on that final departure ....

Heathrow Aircraft - past and present. If you recall, in case of the final flight of Concorde, for the departure clearance, JFK Tower brought back the same controller who gave Concorde her first landing clearance. I guess we Americans are lot more emotional. 🤗 but, though inevitable, it is sad. At Bangalore we used to see the G-CIVx series through out the winter schedule. A very very sad day for aviation as the saying goes “all good things come to an end” what a shame!!! The crew flying those big birds today must have had a lump in their throats. Come rain or shine these machines always look magnificent, and the saying goes “they don’t make them like they used to”. What a lovely send off by the pilot in IVY. I JUST HOPE AND PREY BA SEE SENSE TO PRESERVE ONE 747 400 @ Heathrow for people to stand and ADMIRE!!! I think it would be lovely to see IVB PRESERVED IN ITS CLASSIC LIVERY. What made BAs 747 400s so unique was the fitment of the Rolls Royce RB211 engine, the sound of those engines was just out of this world!!! Lovely footage as well of the first two 747 400s arriving @ Heathrow nicely put thank you!!! Every time I saw the 747 400s take off or land it gave me goose bumps such a lovely aircraft!!!
