I love the fact that even in exile, Iroh still calls zuko “Prince Zuko”. He never lets him forget his responsibilities and his potential. He truly believes in him.
You notice on rewatch all the moments that you would expect him to snap, and he just doesn't. Then when Zuko puts himself in harm's way? out comes the dragon of the west, spitting fire. "You followed the Dai Li into their secret base?! Are you kidding me?! And I'm still mad about the time Zuko went trudging around the North Pole. Iroh is definitely having PTSD from losing his son and now his surrogate son wants to walk into danger and THAT is when he snaps, not when Zuko is mean to him, not when Zuko goes off stealing from people. Not when Zuko drags him around the world on a mission that Iroh didn't believe in. It's when Zuko does something suicidal. Iroh is so well written.
@@Sairin13 oh man, those are real good points! Iroh losing his cool in fear of Zuko ending up like Lu Ten, particularly in that moment, makes so much sense.. thanks! 🙌
"... if you have any info, please contact Avatar Aang in the Upper Ring, 96th District, Building 217." 1:31 So I find it pretty funny that Zuko's looking around in the street like confused John Travolta when the address is LITERALLY written on the poster
@@QuackAttack to be fair, the city is huge and he hasnt been there that long. Itd be like seeing an address in new york city, when youve only lived there for like 2 weeks tops
@@juicyfruits8071 That is a rather bad comparison. The streets in NYC are numbered. It is a grid system. "Where you at? 24th and 5th? Where you wanna go? 35th and 6th? 11 up and 1 over!"
Honestly my favorite episodes from each book are the Aang/Zuko parallel/team up episode. Blue Spirit (first time we see them side by side), Bitter Work (both trying to learn a new skill and failing due to their opposite thought processes need to learn them) and Fire Bending Masters (Aang & Zuko finding the origins of fire bending).
Something that should be mentioned and it is kinda funny is that the flyers have the gang's full address written on them, so it is pretty funny that zuko is all 'whaaaaaa?' when he gets a hold of that piece of paper lol... Also, according to the creators of this show, jet dies in this episode, the dai li guy 100% kills him.
Nickelodeon was forbidden from showing someone actually die, or saying it, so the Avatar writers had to come up with different ways to say it. One example is in this episode, when Toph whispers "He's lying.", referring to Jet promising he'll be okay. He's dead, folks. Sorry, but it's true.
What about Sokka and Katara's mom? They never showed her death but Katara mentions it all the time. And the Air Nomads genocide was also pretty straight foward.
Oh man, the last two episodes you always started in such a happy and upbeat mood and got more and more depressed as the episodes went on. This episode your body language and everything was so tense and negative, even downright hostile... 😂 but it’s great that you're so invested in the show! 😀👍
When Iroh raises his voice, it always hits so hard on a personal level for everyone.. It's so stern and yet still so gentle - and I think it's because everyone knows that he's right. This one episode reminds me of why this show is so much better than others.. it has symbolism and so much deeper meaning.
You can't really 'hate' characters like Zuko who's life had been trapped by the sin of his own father. Being empathetic finds the way to give the right people with the right heart a chance to set all the mistakes right, while hate gives a blind path of misunderstanding.
This episode also surprises me. There are episodes in Avatar that are known for the emotional hits, but this one always comes out of nowhere because it mixes the sad and the scary in a way that feels more mature than previous episodes. It's an underrated favorite of mine!
The stretch of episodes from 2x06 to 3x01 is in my opinion the best of the whole series (and really high up there in all shows ever). All of them hit so hard for me.
I don't know how many of you fans noticed or not but in Jets memory flashback when he was a boy and his village was being burnt the fire bender that he sees in his flashback is the leader of the rough rhinos
Now all I can "see" in my mind is Arianna, Maple, and the Joo Dees getting together and singing: 🎵Welcome to Ba Sing Se, such a perfect town; 🎵 🎵Here we have some rules, let us lay them down! 🎵 🎵Keep your feet off the grass;🎵 🎵Wash your shoes, wipe your... face!🎵 🎵Ba Sing Se; Ba Sing Se; Ba Sing Se's the perfeeect tooown!🎵 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'm glad they remind us that his family was slaughtered by the Fire Nation right in front of him when he was just a little child. Yes, the plan he had to drown a village full of people was crazy and going too far, but there's a good reason why he was driven to such extremes. I think when Zuko meets him on that boat, he really was trying to atone for his sins and leave his trauma behind. He seemed genuine when he talked about how he made mistakes and wanted a fresh start in the city. We have no reason to believe that he had any ill intentions (even though he robs the kitchen, he did it to feed the poor, hungry passengers, and nobody got hurt). He only reverts when he notices Iroh firebend to heat his tea. Jet's weakness is the Fire Nation. As soon as you bring them up, his trauma comes back, and he stops thinking clearly. I'm sure after that he couldn't see Iroh and Zuko as "human" anymore, all he could see was the faces of the people who killed his family, and he unraveled.
Yep, Aang's entire country was slaughtered, Katara & Sokka's mom was killed, Appa was kidnapped and spent maybe a month suffering in a variety of ways, Iroh's son was killed in war, you could write a book on all of Zuko's shit, but #1 would be the "fatherlord" burned his face off and banished him for the "crime" of speaking at the wrong time. Oh, and Jet's parents were killed and now a cult killed him and his buddies in a creepy basement (it is implied). This is a kid's show?
"tornado windball..." Some people think we saw the aftermath of that when we saw Monk Gyatsu surrounded by dead firebenders. But you know, that really was unclear... You finally get some resolution here.
The Earth Kingdom/Ba Sing Se is very much designed to be a regime in free fall. When governments are collapsing, they almost always resort to totalitarianism in a desperate effort to cling to power for power's sake (i.e., control of the people, not care for the people). And along with this, more often than not, the guy at the top who you would think is in control (the king, emperor, president, tsar, etc.) is just a powerless figurehead for the real power brokers who are constantly scheming behind the scenes, tearing everything up from the inside as they all fight with each other for a piece of the disintegrating pie. A real-world example of the Earth Kingdom at this stage in the game would be the Chinese Empire right before its collapse.
The creepy thing is there's no way to prove that there aren't real world "Dai Lee" groups like this. If there were, nobody would ever find out, would they? They keep their existence and activities on a need to know basis, after all. You know...without the cartoon depiction of brainwashing obviously. Real brainwashing is not achieved in a matter of 5 minutes with hypnosis, it's more like subtly getting a young or vulnerable person to blindly trust someone/something over time.
Aang: Saving Appa is our #1 priority, for that goal, we have no choice but to break the rules this time. Toph: Did someone say break the rules? (randomly demolishes house) She doesn't really need a reason to do it, does she lol
remember 2 episodes ago, when Katara complimented Toph? She could tell it was a true compliment because otherwise she would have known Katara was lying.
It's so funny how you're saying you should have watched the kids show before the adults show to end the day with something more lighthearted. That speaks volumes of ATLA.
1. you said somehting here that wont pay off till Season 3 of Korra XD and 2. oh you sweet summer children... didnt anyone warn you about this series? it only gets slightly better from here in terms of making you cry XD
This episode is kind of a diss at the Chinese Communist Party, as "Laogai" is the shortened word for the re-education and labor camps that have been run since the 1950s
Would love for the “lovely ladies duo” to watch Carole and Tuesday english dubbed. They deserve a fun anime that makes them smile to pair with Avatar’s upcoming final season.
Maple has a nack for calling out things seasons before they happen, especially with bending. So far she's called out blood bending, metal bending and in this episode she hints at Zahir's head tornado choking thing from Korra.
yes, Jet's gang wanted to be alone with him so they could finish him off and take away his pain. It was commented afterwards that it was too heavy for a Nickelodeon kid show, so they decided not to make it explicit. Also, it's clarified at Season 3, since the reminiscent members of Jet's gang join Team Avatar for the Eclipse raid
@@Diegesis It's not as good from start to finish as AtLA, but let's be real, nothing is. While it has it's issues Korra is still a good series with some great moments. It also deals with different and interesting themes. I think it's a great follow up if you want more of the Avatar universe, I'd be sad to see the girls miss out on it.
Avatar doesn't follow Daoist elements, besides all their Chinese influences, but the excess of the Earth qi in Daoism causes sadness. And this book is full of it.
9:26 Ma’am, that would get the show taken off TV and the rest of the episodes relegated exclusively to some janky cable channel’s website. Hypothetically. (But since I just checked your Patreon and saw that you’re up to Season 4 of Korra, then I’ll say now I’m REALLY looking forward to your Korra reactions!)
