I became fascinated with Custer’s Last Stand when I watched this movie with Dad as a kid. He cautioned me the film was “pure Hollywood” but such a battle really occurred. At least they didn’t have the Cheyenne and Sioux riding around Custer’s command in circles.

Larry Bittke Disney’s Tonka has a decent LSH scene. With Custer sitting and leaning on a dead horse, shouting orders. Tonka has one of the more realistic last stand scenes until son Of The Morning Star in 1991.

For the record, the Native American's never rode around in a circle to be shot at. In fact, Wagon Trains actually made a square. The Circle came about because of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Native Americans rarely attacked Large Wagon Trains, only a handful of times that happened. Usually, if you were in a Train of 80-100 Wagons you were pretty safe. Raiding party's didn't want to have to face 100 guns or more. They would attack small Trains and Individual wagons. Because they could outrun the horses, Railroad Train attacks were also rare. The Native American's were not stupid and usually attacked 'Soft Targets'. Individual isolated houses for example. Of course, disease, battle attrition, the extermination of their food sources, and the ability of the Army to fight in Winter all added up to inevitable defeat.

Unfortunately, this was neither the first, nor the last historical event that Hollywood took liberties with to tell a story. From "Birth of a Nation" onward, Hollywod had always choose to give the Legend, rather than the truth. One day, before I leave here, someone is going to tell me what Hollywood had against the Union. P.S...I still like the way Custer's horse slid to a stop in "They Died With Their Boots On"!💀

The movie is more appreciated for the inner workings of the post Civil War Indian Wars politics than the overly heroic inaccurate depiction of the battle. The fact that incompetent military command and greedy politicians led to so many Native Americans (Whole Tribes), Settlers and Soldiers to die pointlessly in a violent unnecessary campaign of conquest was criminal itself.

Battle didn't happen this way. Custer charged recklessly, into a trap. The Sioux and their Allies first cut off the rear of the column, and basically diced up the rest. At the end, I have heard, Custer was left with something like only 44 Men at the end. So it wasn't the whole Command.

The battle is very close to how happen in reality, because the Custer's division fought with courage until the end; Custer divided his ; Custer died by two bullet wounds and his body was respected, while the others soldiers' corpses were mutilated (took their scalps, hearts and visceras) his battalion divided into 3 sub units (2 of them in pursuit for Indians which some fought bravely as they could while others trapped in despair escaped terrified but still many soldiers were killed shamefully)

That summary contains about as much fiction as this Hollywood movie clip. I'll just pick one point though; it's very 'pop history' to say Custer was respected, Lakota and Cheyenne accounts say they didn't know Custer was there until well after the fighting, and not only that but some have stated that he wasn't mutilated because he was a suicide and it was bad luck to take the scalp of a suicide.

Just to be nit picky here, but there seems to be too many Native American deaths, the U.S. was not surrounded, but charged, from my research, Custer wasn't the last to die, as at least 28 troopers attempted to escape, but failed. The skirmish lines weren't really that organized, as, having recently been to the battlefield, the dead were scattered apart. Also, there were no trees at the battlefield, and the Native Americans went back to the battlefield for looting, I think.
@jhoff1234
@jhoff1234 5 лет назад
In the real battle, less than 40 warriors went to the Happy Hunting Ground. And the dead ones were not a bunch of chiefs, killed in hand-to-hand combat while running around wearing feathered war bonnets. The shot where the Native American wearing a war bonnet with a long train of feathers runs into the battle and puts a lance through the Brit before Custer turns and blows him away is absurdity. (No Sioux warrior could ever earn that many feathers if he is prone to doing something that stupid in battle.) This movie makes it seem as though the only reason Custer lost was because there were thousands of Native Americans who just kept coming when the first ones were killed. Far from accurate.

Historically accurate? Probably not, but a well shot and directed film. Not with the special effects of today, probably cost too much to film it the same way today without using CGI.From what I can gather it was at best a bad command decision or at worst a desire for all the glory. Having all 3 columns out of site of each other was very bad, should have had scouts out watching what was going on with the other columns. But having pushed his men and horses so hard to get there ahead of General Terry was the stupidest thing. Had they taken their time and been rested, the result might have been different or Custer might have been arrested and court-martialed for disobedience of orders. Just my humble opinion

Custer had more men than that with him. And the Indians weren’t mounted.

terry waller No, Reno had the peeping tom charge. Custer went ahead with about 235 men. Benteen stopped to support Reno’s command after they’d retreated to the knolls. Grass was deep by the river perhaps, but not atop the hills.

Question Could Custer and Reno together with the whole troops withstood the attack I don't think so But Custer never had a chance The only way would have been to cut and shoot his way through A report in 1962 says he rode right in the whole group of warriors

Exactly!! According to historians & historical facts, it's believed Custer was one of the first killed. We don't know if that's completely accurate, but I believe some Indians who were there later said Custer was one of the first ones killed. Of course the cavalry was completely surrounded & vastly outnumbered, so there was no retreat for them, even with their commanding officer dead. The only survivor on the side of the cavalry was Myles Keough's horse Comanche, & he was wounded badly!

It was poor Command and Control on Custer's Part. As per any Military engagement and or battle, throughout History, there are few options: attack, defend, await reinforcements and or withdraw. At the Deep Coulee Forge, an old Buffalo crossing, a handful of Cheyenne warriors with the Yellow Boy Henrys and Winchester repeating rifles stopped Custer from crossing the Greasy Grass. The Cheyenne had long awaited the moment. They had eagerly awaited revenge for the slaughter of Black Kettle's people at the Washita. Of historical note, Custer was shot off his horse while crossing the Greasy Grass. Troopers from his Command. They made their way to Last Stand Hill. After the battle ended, his body reflected two wounds -- one in the chest and another to the head. Perhaps he committed suicide? Today History recalls both Sioux and Cheyenne accounts. Who killed Custer? You decide.

Nobody knows. If you look into the accounts you see the meta-narrative which is that whites, hungry for an epic narrative, a last stand, a name of the killer, essentially hounded the native witnesses into taking credit. People will eventually tell you want to hear if you box them in enough. They didn't even know they fought Custer until they met up with friendly tribes who had heard it through the fort-chain grapevine. Custer's tactics were probably pretty standard when attacking a settlement, pinch it from both sides, roll through the scrambling warriors , create chaos, and then cut down people and set fire to things. The major bad decision that makes most of the play by play moot was the decision to attack at all. It was a massive village and the sheer numbers made it impossible for him to have a successful outcome. The alternate universe where he did not split his forces and both he and Reno rode on the Western side of the river or on the Eastern coulees, the best case scenario is he would have been pushed back with Reno to the Benteen hilltop, and worst case they would have all been slaughtered on the "last stand hill" it just would have taken longer. Something in between maybe where they held out in 2 pockets or Benteen's pack train gets the brunt of it, but no arrangement would have meant a victory and the burning of Sitting Bull's camp. The only right decision would have been to listen to his scouts, to attempt to skirt the Sioux and link up with the rest of General Terry's forces and then they would have stood a fighting chance. Most likely the Sioux would have headed SW toward the Bighorn Mountains and slipped between the two forces before they could coordinate, leading them to re-deploy and try to ensnare them again (which is essentially what would happen later as they converged on the Black Hills.

All americans died (more than 200). Sioux had about 30 (thirthy) deads, so I guess the battle was a little different.... it's years that people misunderstand Hollywood for history
