"Is this Indiana getting his hat?" ...and his whip ...and his fear of snakes ...and the scar on his chin. Essentially the entire mythos of Indiana Jones was created in one fortuitous afternoon.
Considering how good Raider of the Lost Ark is, this is a great third movie. The addition of Indy's dad added a perfect dynamic and the story gives some nice character backstory. I saw it in the cinema and it delivered, one of my top 5 movies ever.
@@Cheepchipsable it was GhB not a typical overdose. It was poor advice for doing this stuff after drinking all night long - which is a recipe for disaster. Poison. Like taking a whole bottle of Nyquil after drinking a liter of vodka
The four of them riding off into the sunset was quite a shot. The challenge was to find a sunset with nothing else in the picture - no trees, no poles, no fences, etc. One of the very few places on earth that met all the criteria was this guy's huge ranch in Texas. Anyway, that's what I read many years ago. I hope I remembered it right.
While Sean Connery was excellent in many roles, to the world at this time he WAS James Bond. Bond was the ultimate suave action hero, especially in the 60's and 70's. So seeing the ultimate action hero play against type as a bookworm, who can't believe that his son gets into these Bond-like adventures, just added to the humor and the joy. In the tank scene, when Connery subdues one of the Germans with a fountain pen, I have to believe that was an homage to Bond's gadgets, especially the fountain pen gadget in Connery's final Bond film. (You'll understand when you see Q issue Bond his gadgets, at the beginning of each movie.)
As great as this movie already is with Ford and Connery and the rest of the cast, River Phoenix as a young Indiana Jones makes it even that much more amazing! A fantastic actor, in fact one of the best and brightest of his generation, River was tragically taken from this world too soon.
After watching your excitement over this installment of Indiana Jones, I’m even more convinced you’ll love National Treasure- there’s a similar father/son repartee, not giving anything away- thats similar to The Last Crusade
Back in the 90s there was a TV show Young Indiana Jones Chronicals, with Sean Patrick Flanery, it was pretty good, Harrison Ford made a cameo in season 2, which was the last season.
The snake bit with young Indy gave all new meaning to that phrase ‘ is that a snake in your pants or are you happy to see me?’ 🤣 Also that betrayal was very ‘cold’ by Elsa..🙃 And lol at ‘shut it frauline’ 😂
I'm new to the channel, but I love that Jen just picked every twist and phrase before it happened. I think that speaks more to Spielberg tapping into the universality of the story than it being a bunch of tired stuff.
The funny part with casting, was Sean Connery, the original James Bond, an action star, who was now playing Indiana Jones's dad. The 4th was filmed decades later & was not well received (now he's fighting Russians rather than Nazi's), the 5th was filmed a decade or 2 after than with Jones in his 70's, treasure hunting with Marcus's daughter.
Hi Jen,finally got to the best Indy movie (hooray! ) I'm going to try again with this suggestion, Tom Selleck in Quigley down under. A new leading man to add to your collection. Great film, and probably his best role. Please give it a chance.
Last Crusade is an absolutely awesome film & recaptures what was missing from Temple of Doom. Fun Facts: Walter Donovan was played by Julian Glover who also played General Veers in The Empire Strikes Back. Another TESB cast member who appeared in The Last Crusade was Michael Sheard who had the uncredited role as Adolf Hitler. He also had an uncredited role in Raiders of The Lost Ark as a U-Boat captain. Sheard is known for Playing Admiral Ozzel in TESB…..but most British people of a certain age will know him as Mr Bronson in the classic TV series Grange Hill. Interestingly the boat chase wasn’t actually filmed in Venice. It was in fact shot at Tilbury Docks near London. Stowe School in Buckinghamshire was used for the Nazi Rally & the property used for Henry Jones house is located in Mill Hill, London. Indiana taking his nickname from his pet Alaskan Malamute is a reference to the character being named after Lucas's dog. Lucas’s dog used to ride around in the front seat of his car; & during the writing of Star Wars, Lucas used his furry co-pilot as the inspiration for Chewbacca. My only complaint (& it’s so minor) about Last Crusade is that the continuity during the train sequence is all over the place. It’s one of those things that once you see it, you’ll never unsee it.
BTW, the "she talks in her sleep line" was improvised by Connery. Ford's reaction is real, and it make the whole crew crack up, so they kept it in the film.
The reason they put a scene in this where young Indy (River Phoenix) cuts his chin with the whip, is because Harrison Ford in real life has a scar on his chin he got from a car accident when he was a teenager. So it was a way to explain why Indy has a scar on his chin.
I love the relationship and interactions between Indy and his dad in this. Sean Connery is just so good in the role. For another great Connery role, I definitely recommend The Untouchables, for which he received an Oscar. For a fun but somewhat goofy role, Highlander is entertaining. And if you want to feel like you just had a drug-free acid trip, there's always Zardoz....
What to do when one wakes up too early continue my jenventure ofc 🎉 this was a lot of fun and a lovely way to start the day and seeing ya fingers twiddling with the cord always makes me happy ( its the little things ) 🙂 cheers jen this was awesome
Sean Connery has starred in so many movies that are a must-watch: - the 6 Bond movies starring him as Bond: Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You only die Twice and Diamonds are Forever (and Never say never again which is a separate movie not connected to the other bond movies) - Murder on the Orient Express - The Wind and the Lion - Time Bandits (he only has a small role in that movie, however the movie is so much fun) - The Name of the Rose - The Hunt for Red October (the second best U-boat movie after Das Boot which is an absolute must watch movie as well) That's just a small selection. Elsa is the love interest btw, and she's also a really great femme fatale.
Connery's casting was very impactful for James Bond fans. Also, "Indiana" isn't Ford's character's name. That was the dogs name. His name is also Henry Jones. That's why his dad calls him junior. The 4th one isn't as good, but they have filmed some of the 5th one in my hometown, and it sounds like that's meant to be pretty good. There are some parts of the 4th one that I think you will like.
I think they added that little story that his dad slept with Schnider cuz Sean Connery was a heart throb back in his day when he used to play James Bond as he's the original Bond. So it was just a little funny thing they added.
So something that gets missed a lot in what the knight says, Indy and his father are not immortal. He said that the cup must not cross the seal, “For that is the boundary and the price of immortality.” Whether that means you have to drink from it regularly to stay alive forever or the magic only works inside the temple isn’t answered, but either way by the time of the fourth movie, Henry Jones Sr has passed away. Fun fact if you’re going to be watching the Bond movies, James Bond carries a specific pistol called a Walther PPK. It’s a German made gun that’s actually been in use since the 1930s in various forms… including in this movie. It’s the pistol that Donovan uses to shoot Henry Jones Sr with which is a callback to Sean Connery’s career making role as the original James Bond. Fun fact the second, there’s a shot of a wolf like dog in the Jones’ house when young Indy brings the cross home. That is a reference to George Lucas’ Alaskan Malamute, Indiana. The dog would ride in his passenger seat often and was the physical inspiration for Chewbacca as well as the namesake of Indiana Smith in his original script for Raiders. Spielberg asked him to change the name to Jones because it sounded better.
Jen, in an episode of Ancient Aliens, they show a guy from the 1980s? find a church in Scotland called White Castle after reading a poem by a guy who was supposed to have found it in the 1500s , and in the church in the 1950s? they were renovating it and below a stained glass window with the three roman numerals, was a statue of an eagle, and it broke and one of the construction workers took the vase that was inside home, it was about 2 inches high made of green alabaster, a mineral found in the middle east. and the guy found the worker's family home and bought it from them. but the movie , the Davinci Code, says, that the story goes further.
I actually prefer this one over the others. I was so young when Raiders came out I just referred to it as the movie with Han Solo. This one was the first one I actually understood, well mostly anyways. And the whole father/son dynamic was excellent. Nice reaction vid, subscribed :)
I own a bull whip and a snake whip. Never whipped myself on the chin but I have whipped myself in the eye. It really really hurt. It's great for making sonic booms but would be awful as a weapon. I've never used it to swing across a crevasse but as is kangaroo hide, it'd probably be strong enough if it could get Purchase on a convenient anchor point lol
Aweee Jen. Your facial expressions are so priceless. When you found out the good Dr. Schnider was double-dipping in bed with both Papa and INdy JOnes. What an EPIC lady. To lay with two of the most handsome actors of all time. Well played Dr. Schnider. Well played.
24:14: Fun Fact, Jen: In the scene where Indy talk with his dad had on the blimp, it was so hot on set that both of them did the scene with no pants on! Get *that* picture in your head. 😄
Yes, my favourite Indiana Jones movie. And yes, I prefer it over Raiders. The Grail is probably one of the biggest McGuffins in movie history. Because yes, they are trying to find the Holy Grail but that's obviously not what the movie is really about. It's about father-son relationships, although the dad in this movie is only 12 years older than the son. I didn't mention this in your Temple video but one reason why Temple is what it is, is because Lucas and Spielberg were going through a tough time. Spielberg has even said that the best thing about Temple is that he met his future wife, Kate Capshaw, who played Willie Scott. (fun fact, Kate Capshaw was referenced in the game Monkey Island 2 in which a character is called Kate Capsize). "She talks in her sleep" is one of the best lines out there. And although I don't really need to I always watch with subtitles/captions and this gives some funny results from time to time. So when you said "We have Harrison Ford" the subtitles said "We have hair support." :D Also the teenager in me laughed way too hard at 2:57 :D Keep up the great work, Jen. :) Oh, and if my eyes aren't deceiving me, you and I have the same edition of The Lord of the Rings on our shelves. :)
This is my favorite of all the Indy films, maybe a little biased since it was the first one I saw and we used to watch it all the time on VHS! Also a great Fathers Day movie.
I know I’m in the minority, but I don’t think the fourth movie, Crystal Skull, is all that bad. Is it better than any in the original trilogy? No. But it’s not unwatchable and it has its moments. If anything, it brings back the power couple of Indy and Marion together again to their rightful place of being the only couple that matters in the franchise.
I don't think you are in the minority. It definitely isn't as good as either Raiders or Last Crusade but I think it's better than Temple. It's just the Crystal Skull haters are so loud and annoying they are like the Star Wars fanbois who lose their shit over every little thing.
Sean Connery was the first Jamed Bond, but he has been in many, many other films. Highlander, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (briefly), Entrapment, First Knight, Zardpz and many others. He managed to keep playing romantic heroes much longer than many male actors. Her name is Elsa, but she can't 'Let it Go'! This movie is the best of the bunch! I've seen 'Cystal Skull' but didn't like it much (it doesn't help that they are fairly sure now that the skulls are fakes, manufactured recently).
The actor playing Young Indy is River Phoenix, Joaquin Phoenix’s brother. He was in a few movies before he died. Stand By me is a great movie starring River Phoenix and Sneakers is a great movie he was in.
HEy Jen, I see you loved to delve into the adventures of a young Indiana Jones aka River Phoenix. The origins of many of the Indy traits, predilections, and phobias are on full display in this amazing intro scene with Indy trying to keep the Celtic Religious cross from falling into the hands of a private collector. River Phoenix was set to be what Leo Decaprio became, instead the acting world lost another great talent to the world of drugs. R.I. P.
@Jen Murray If you are interested in another Sean Connery film (very different from Indiana jones though). You should check out "The rock". One of THE best action movies of the 90's.
There's only 1 other Indiana Jones Movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull 2008 Although Indiana Jones 5 comes out July 30th 2023 and Both John Williams and Harrison Ford are both talking about ending there careers with Indiana Jones 5 there's aslo a Television Series that Came out between 1991 and 1993 Called original the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles When Released on DVD George Lucas retitled it The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones the Show is really good and explains alot why he is the way he is even more than the beginning of Crusade did definitely worth checking out
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is the weakest of the four BUT it is still Harrison Ford, Spielberg, Lucas, and John Williams together again. And it is the return of Marion which I think Jen will love. Would be curious to see the perspective of a young person on Indy 4 vs. those of us that grew up with the originals.
I think you should give Kingdom of the crystal skull a chance... Never let opinions of others discourage whether or not it worth seeing... What's not good to some is good for many others... Besides, if you don't see it, you'll never see the return of Marion! Lol
The Last Crusade and Raiders are even in quality; both are excellent. My view on Elsa sleeping with Indy and Henry is that she was obviously a trained spy, using seduction to extract secret information.
I agree, the first and third were the best. I just couldn't get into the second one that much. It was okay but a far cry from 1 and 3. Great reaction, review. Be safe
Great reaction Jen. This was definitely the best of the three movies. I always tell ppl to watch the 4th movie and make up your own mind. Eventhough someone may not like it, it could be that you might like it. It's not as bad as ppl describe it. I thought it was ok. I've seen it at least 3 or 4.
I don't think you can fault Indy for not knowing his father went missing. He disappeared in Italy, Indy is in America, and it's the late 1930s its not like they had email, and a phone call would be expensive.
About the more recent Indiana Jones movies, personally, I don't think Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is worth watching EXCEPT for the fact that you get a continuation of one of the storylines from one of the previous movies, I'm really trying hard to not give any spoilers in case you decide to watch and react to them. Then The Dial of Destiny, I think, is the perfect ending to the Indiana Jones story, so it's worth a watch, but if you're going to watch it, then you do need to watch Kingdom in order for certain things to make sense.
One often-overlooked addition to the Indiana Jones franchise is the television show "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles". There were two seasons in 1992 and 1993, and then four TV movies from 1994 to 1996. There were a few episodes with a very young Indy (8-10 years old, IIRC) and the rest focused on teen to young adult Indy (16-21), including his service in WWI. it's not quite as action-packed as the movies, but from my memory (it's been a long time since I watched through it) it was very good (especially the older version...the kid Indy stories were decent at best).
Alison played a great role in this. Even knowing and watching again, I still loved her character. I can only roleplay about her because her character development was pretty much in passing. Very short but a lot was happening with her psyche for sure. Unfortunately not enough of it depicted. That's pretty much the only gripe I'd have with this movie. Either way a great film for sure!
Elsa is actually my favorite Indy girl because she keeps you guessing. You think she's good, then you find out she's bad, but then there's enough evidence to keep you wondering if she's going to be redeemed. In the end she paid the price for her sins though. Elsa just couldn't let it go.
The actress who played Elsa, Alison Doody was great playing another villain in the movie RRR. She seems to have aged gracefully as she looks great in that movie
"Not his face! That’s the moneymaker!" 😂Love your impromptu lines, Jen! When Last Crusade came out, Connery was still renowned as Bond, a man's man. So this academic/geeky role was really a turn, and the dad-son chemistry amazing. I felt that the Indy movies carried on the mantle of globetrotting adventure that were the Bond movies.
There is a good reason for that. The Bond movies were actually a huge inspiration for the Indiana Jones movies, along with the cinema serials that Lucas enjoyed as a kid. And when it came down to casting the role of Indy's father, their opinion was: "The only man that could ever be the father of Indiana Jones... is James Bond."
Even with their issues, and Henry only ever calling his son Jr, he knew the one way to reach him when it really mattered was to call him Indiana. He knew that would bring him back to attention and let him know how serious it was that he listen and do what he said. Gets me in the feels.
"You don't sleep with Indiana Jones and then betray him. Im sorry, No!" - Jen Murray Something to make you go hmm. As a kid George Lucas spent many a days in the backseat of his car, with a dog as his co-pilot. That dog was named Indiana and was the inspiration for Chewbacca. Very nice review as always Jen, thanks. 👍🙋♂️
I was truly surprised by the chemistry between Sean Connery and Harrison Ford. I didn’t expect this movie to be so damn good. So few “part 3” movies are ever better than the previous movies. Not sure I would call it better than the first, but on par with it. Great movie. Great reaction. 🔥
this is on par with the first one. Doom is a love hate thing. We don't talk about Crystal Skull thou but the new one coming out is supposedly gonna go back to it's roots. We shall see thou
@@dernwine seriously it just felt too different. that one actress felt forced as the villain and her russian accent was horrible. It just annoyed me anytime she spoke. Shia did not feel like a good pick for his son and then who can forget the refrigerator... lol
Sean Connery was a great Bond and started off the longest lasting franchise in cinema. Dr No was ok but I feel that Gold Finger is one of the true classics and I loved From Russia with love, with Robert Shaw (Quinn from jaws) playing an amazingly lethal protagonist
