Forgive me for patting myself on the back, but I taught Gospel Doctrine a few weeks ago (including Thessalonians) and talked about how preparing to meet the Savior is the same whether we meet Him at His Second Coming or before that when we die. But I live in a spiritually mature ward and received no push back on this idea, but rather agreement. When I asked about food storage, one sister commented that it will be of no help if we are not prepared spiritually.

I agree but one thought on food storage - I used mine years ago when a medical crises meant a very limited income. I also used it during the lockdowns and shared items with non members. Food storage is not necessarily for the last days.

@@reppi8742 I think it is more how some think food storage is to prepare for the second coming when it is much more subtle than that, as you described. Wisdom in food storage is a good thing, but thinking that is the most important part of preparing for the second coming is not wise. I had a RS teacher that pushed food storage constantly and I was saying we need to shore up our spiritual strength. Focus on Christ, and our faith in him.

If you are spiritually prepared, then you are physically prepared! The prophets have warned and commanded to be prepared, get your food storage! If you are spiritually prepared, you are physically and emotionally prepared

Elder Bednar October 2020 GC “Some Church members opine that emergency plans and supplies, food storage, and 72-hour kits must not be important anymore because the Brethren have not spoken recently and extensively about these and related topics in general conference. But repeated admonitions to prepare have been proclaimed by leaders of the Church for decades. The consistency of prophetic counsel over time creates a powerful concert of clarity and a warning volume far louder than solo performances can ever produce.” D&C105:6 6 And my people must needs be chastened until they learn obedience, if it must needs be, by the things which they suffer.

I agree with you. Years supply food storage is important however, the context and focus was that we need to be prepared for life after death and that can only be a spiritual preparation. It’s hard to get faith in a can or dried righteousness.

Many really good things were said in these episodes, especially concerning repentence and right now being the time to prepare to meet God. I was surprised however by certain opinions, which seem to be an overreaction to the overreaction people have about the Endtimes. It sounds like brother Porter dismisses a number of prophecies and covenants in the scriptures. For example, concerning Zion: JSR Genesis 9 "...I will remember my covenant... which I made unto thy father Enoch, that, when men should keep all my commandments, Zion should again come on the earth, the city of Enoch, which I have caught up unto myself." There are many other scriptures which make it clear that a literal Zion people will be established, before and ready to receive the Holy City from above (OT, NT, BoM, D&C & PoGP). Even the risen Lord prophesied about such to the Nephites. In addition, it seems like brother Porter dismisses many important things prophesied about extensively in the scriptures such as the second exodus, a literal gathering, His strange work, the restoration of all things and more.

Sincere question: What about when Moroni appeared to Grandmother Whitmer. She said he was a short heavy set man with gray hair. Why did he not appear to her in glory? But appeared as a man?
@RecoveringUGrad
@RecoveringUGrad Месяц назад
Because he could. Resurrected beings can choose to appear with or without glory. They can be disguised as ordinary people. Hebrews 13: 2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

We ARE supposed yo take care of our bodies. Exercise the body for health. Our prophets, Joseph Smith, David O McKay, Gordon Hinkley, Marion Nelson ..and others...ALL emphasized this! We are a fat and put of shape people.

Hi Bruce, Thank you for the time and effort you put into your lessons. May I as a poor, regular “Joe” make a request for your consideration? When we speak of the scriptures, we don’t say BoM, PoGP, Bib, Mos, Abr, BUT, we always say “DandC”. It’s obviously for convenience, but the term also describes a medical procedure for women. After counsel from a Stake President who was involved in the medical profession, I have made the adjustment to say Doctrine and Covenants. One might say I’m riding my Gospel hobbyhorse and you might be correct. I just offer this for your consideration, maybe you can be the voice of a new trend like using the correct name of the Church! God bless and thanks for listening. I am now open for all the cannonballs

I absolutely agree that the scriptures are the most important source to look to: Doctrine & Covenants 45:37-44 37 Ye look and behold the fig trees, and ye see them with your eyes, and ye say when they begin to shoot forth, and their leaves are yet tender, that summer is now nigh at hand; 38 Even so it shall be in that day when they shall see all these things, then shall they know that the hour is nigh. 39 And it shall come to pass that he that feareth me shall be looking forth for the great day of the Lord to come, even for the signs of the coming of the Son of Man. 40 And they shall see signs and wonders, for they shall be shown forth in the heavens above, and in the earth beneath. 41 And they shall behold blood, and afire, and vapors of smoke. 42 And before the day of the Lord shall come, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon be turned into blood, and the stars fall from heaven. 43 And the remnant shall be gathered unto this place; 44 And then they shall look for me, and, behold, I will come; and they shall see me in the clouds of heaven, clothed with power and great glory; with all the holy angels; and he that watches not for me shall be cut off.

Why not just call them the Book of Commandments, like it was originally, especially since the portion that was referred to as "the Doctrine" (Lectures on Faith) was removed in 1921?

Alma 12: 33-34 But God did call on men, in the name of his Son, (this being the plan of redemption which was laid) saying: If ye will repent, and harden not your hearts, then will I have mercy upon you, through mine Only Begotten Son; Therefore, whosoever repenteth, and hardeneth not his heart, he shall have claim on mercy through mine Only Begotten Son, unto a remission of his sins; and these shall enter into my rest.

Death is not the veil. Not in the temple instruction, not in the scriptures, not anywhere. I am surprised how only recently I have a number of members of the Church mention that precept. It's plain wrong.

Yes we can see Christ while in the flesh. The second comforter is what Joseph Smith talked about a lot and wanted all the saints to keep seeking it until you obtain it. God is certainly no respecter of persons.

Upon which lines, and upon which precepts was Jospeh Smith prepared for the First Vision? How about Alma Sr? Or Alma the younger with his heavenly visitation? How about Paul? Moses? King Limoni? Or many others? Isaiah uses "line upon line" as a pejorative. In section 128 it is used in the context of giving an account. In section 98 I think it is the same context as 2N28, "...thus saith the Lord God: I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little;..." That is not a small distinction to make saying that this method is for the "children of men". In comparison, sons/children of God don't follow this pattern in the scriptures, and neither do many others in scripture.

Hugh Nibley once told me that a person has to be as prepared to receive the answer as they are prepared to ask the question. It doesn’t seem that a revelation comes without some sort of preparation or question like the first Vision or Moroni appearing and every section in the Doctrine and Covenants came because of a question. Perhaps the question is part of the preparation. It seems that revelation requires some sort of catalyst. Even Isaiah explains that milk is a prerequisite to meat.

@@bruce_porter yes as a change of heart (&mind) similar to the Anti-Nephi-Lehies, and about which was spoken of in Deuteronomy 30, Ezekiel 11&36, Jeremiah 31, 2Corinthians3, etc. Much about the aim and intent.
