I just finished recording my review and I no joke thought to myself when I left the theater I really wanna know what James thought of this film and what do u know my prayers are answered
@@geekinwithJamesHancock I’m not great at these instant takes I feel shame once I watched urs lol . We. Got to get together again soon u are killing it brother as always so maybe we can do something for succession
I'm thinking that I need to do a Top 10 Ridley Scott video ahead of House of Gucci so I will definitely be checking out the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock i never thought about it that way but there would be quite the list , Im cycling distance from the Wicklow mountains (south of Dublin) and they are used a lot, saw one of the villages used for the upcoming Disney film Enhanced 2 this year, and often cycled by the lake thats used for the tv show Vikings, then the famous library at my old college is used in Foundation. Hollywood spoils us!!!
Kingdom of heaven was killed by studio cut. Characters change motivations, important events vanish without a trace. It needs to be seen in Ridley's version. Not his best movie , but if somebody asks me to name Scott's movies: it will be on list. Better than Robin Hood.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock I would love to see that! Ridley Scott definitely deserves it and I’m so glad he is returning to form can’t wait for house of Gucci
Not sure if you’ve seen Kingdom of Heaven yet but I’d say that is Ridley Scott’s best work in the 21st century. Too bad the theatrical version turned many people off and caused a stigma about the movie but the director’s cut is a masterpiece. The Last Duel is also a great one.
I think it's odd you point out Adam Driver's bravery in those specific scenes, when Jodie Comer basically puts her heart on her sleeve in what could be deemed as a traumatic experience on its own, simulated or not. I honestly think shes the entire emotional core of this movie, which is a huge feat, and she nails it. Granted I think this was done on purpose, but still.
didn’t expect a review of this film from you so thanks! i’m really excited to see this as a bit of a precursor to my upcoming dune week. i finished the book recently and i’m eager to see how it plays out on screen with all of these great actors. also if you’re enjoying jodie comer, i can’t recommend her show ‘killing eve’ enough! she plays a psychopathic assassin opposite sandra oh and the acting is beyond top notch. the 4th and final season will be out next year and it would be cool to see you cover it here on the channel if you ever get the time.
The novel 'The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat' looks right up my alley. Time to add it to the over-growing stack of books I want to read. Reading 'The Exorcist' right now. As far as 'Killing Eve' goes, I've been meaning to get caught up years.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock it’s great! don’t expect a traditional story though. it very much reads like a historian recording facts that may or may not be true. the exorcist though? hmm, book review please! if you can of course lol. and yes, killing eve should definitely move up your list! i finished it only about a month ago and i thought it was phenomenal. definitely earned it’s hype.
Great review as always man! Gotta say, I'm really surprised I haven't seen a review for The Green Knight since it's right in your wheelhouse. You was the 1st one I looked up when I came out the theater and I checked again today when I bought the 4k...then seen you had this up...have you not seen it??
nice shout out there to the Fury Wilder fight which was indeed an epic lol. I so buzzing for this film now huge fan of Ridley and have been for years so glad he's still around making good shit
It can't be worse than _'The Green Knight'_ adaptation... As far as 2021 Medieval period films/stories from age old source material and/or history - _minus 'The Green Knight' fantasy aspects_ - *here's hoping that **_'The Last Duel'_** and A24's **_'The Tragedy of Macbeth'_** (starring Denzel Washington) have more gravitas, more impressive scripts, cinematography, greater depth, richer dialogue & acting performances, and altogether more indelible components.*
I walked out of The Green Knight. It was so damn boring. But I loved The Tragedy of Macbeth and reviewed it at this year's New York Film Festival: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-19Ct4gQTO6c.html
@@geekinwithJamesHancock Haha...I just watched 'The Last Duel' tonight and it was _exceedingly_ more fulfilling _(on every level, and in scope)_ than something like that over-hyped underwhelming 'The Green Knight' bs. My enjoyment of *_'The Last Duel'_* now has me looking forward to, and hoping the best in regard to, A24's *_'The Tragedy of Macbeth'_* .
@@geekinwithJamesHancock Bring on *_'THE NORTHMAN'_* . ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--bmmg6aLFFo.html *_"I WILL AVENGE YOU FATHER._* *_I WILL SAVE YOU MOTHER._* *_I WILL KILL YOU FJÖLNIR."_* Hopefully it lives up to the hype and potential.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock I think the show has potential but didn't found it's way yet. It is very different from the books but I think the changes are good and much more interesting. The cast is incredible and the visuals too. It is worth watching. There a many mysteries in the show would like to see your take on this.
I see this has been given an 18 rating in the UK which really surprised me after seeing the pretty generic, soap opera trailer. Perhaps Scott’s first 18 rated movie since Hannibal? Much more intrigued now.
In comparison to other films of a similar caliber in terms of blood, gore and general violence, The Last Duel isn't that bad. In comparison, it received a rating of "16 and older" in Germany, where an "only adults" rating exists and that does see a fair bit of use (28 Days Later, Kill Bill, Sin City and Fight Club carry that one, for example). I wager the deciding factor to make it "adults only" in the UK are the stipulations regarding the depiction of sexual coercion: The 18 rating targets "material deemed likely to encourage an interest in 'sexually abusive' activity", as well as passing off rape as in any way encouraged by the victim. In the movie are two detailed depictions of rape: one from the POV of the rapist, which supposedly depicts the woman making only customary protests while actually welcoming the man's advances (or so the rapist claims for the sake of the plot, the accompanying images of the act itself are as obviously rape as during the depiction of the woman's own POV where she denies consent and tries to fend him off), as well as one depiction of the husband insisting on intercourse immediately upon hearing his wife was recently raped (he literally says something along the lines of "I won't have him be the last man to have taken you").
I'm a huge Ridley Scott fan too, and this movie certainly got my interest. But your review made me want to buy a ticket and go this weekend! I haven't been to a theater since the pandemic started. I have a ticket for "Dune" next weekend, but maybe I'll mix things up and jump on "The Last Duel" this weekend! Thanks for the enthusiastic review!
Both are well worth returning to theater to see although I won't be able to resist watching Dune at home on HBO Max. I got lucky and already had a chance to see it at the New York Film Festival: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r5BLveXfhJ4.html
Personally i don't even qualify gladiator as his top 3 movie. This one imo is ahead of gladiator. Imo this rivals martian as his 3rd best but not as good as blade runner or alien.
Thanks for your review James. I too have been a true Ridley Scott fan for decades. Loved your story about putting him to sleep. Hannibal is a rare example of the movie being better than the book cause he omitted that ridiculous plot turn in the end part with Clarise and Hannibal.😂😂 I agree about Alien and Blade Runner and the overlooked Thelma and Louise. I also loved The Martian, ‘I refuse to turn the beat around’ 😂lovely end credits too.☮️
Glad to hear this. I'm a sucker for blades and hand to hand combat, specially in a medieval setting. And Ridley Scott is one of my all time favorite directors so I will definitely watch it. I just hope he returns to ALIEN and gives us more engineers and David. xD
I use to rely on people like Chris Stuckmann for film reviews/suggestions; but I feel that his critiques have gotten lazy and boring. You've become my go-to recommender for quality cinema. Keep being you, James Hancock!
Thanks for the kind words Adam! I'd gladly suit up and fight Damon and Driver for even a small fraction of the success Stuckman has enjoyed on his channel.
Well his pilot episode for Raised by Wolves was outstanding and showed me he still had chops. And The Martian was a monster hit even if it wasn't one of my personal faves.
