Maybe the war wouldn't have happened in the first place if he hadn't gone off in a sulk, leaving Snoke and Kylo Ren to blow up 5 planets with billions on them. Let alone his best friend died, and the Empire Mark 2 (how the hell did they get so big anyway?!) manage to wipe out the Resistance except for about 20 people?! Yeah, great job, thanks Luke. Don't let the door hit you on the way put. You didn't even try to fight and take down Kylo Ren. Fabulous. Good job.

Nunya Bidness he did change the Todd of the war by keeping everyone alive, YOU FUCKING MORON. Once again, all I can say is you don’t understand words. I never said you used the word distraught, I was describing Luke, and defending him having a reason plot wise to feel that way.

Somehow I'm not surprised, for some reason they have to either destroy or completely render the Enterprise powerless in every single movie they make while, if I remember right, it never happens in the shows and if it has then it's rare. I guess it's safe to assume that's how Picard dies in the movie, he probably stayed behind and evacuated his crew when separating the Saucer section and led a lone kamikaze attack in an attempt to save his crew or to buy them enough time to make it back to Federation space. What a brave, selfless man but from what I've heard is that they portrayed Picard as a coward so I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't separate the two sections and just decided, for absolutely no reason, to sacrifice his entire crew along with himself.

I so wanted to love this movie. But I walked out of the theater feeling gut punched and disappointed. We got to see Luke come into his own in the OT but never got to see that Luke be the Jedi we knew him to be. Instead we got a tired, bitter old man. This was not the man who brought his father back from the dark side. This was Jake Skywalker, not Luke Skywalker.

Cock Knocker was a silliest role KS could've thought of giving Mark Hamill, just to fulfill a fantasy of directing a light saber fight. The waste of talent was too embarrassing. Everytime we get a new Star Wars, a subsection of the viewers come away saying "Never again. This ruined Star Wars." ....but they always come back...and they hang around for years trying to make everyone else hate it because they hated it. So come on guys. If you didn't like it, you didn't like it. Thats fine. But you need to accept that other people DID like it. Trying to drag their enjoyment down because you didn't enjoy the film makes you petty as fuck. Just be content with your own opinions and let other people like what they like.

It seems to me like there are a lot of fans that do not understand how she was able to get back aboard the ship. Force Pushing herself towards the door is a valid option, also Force Pulling the ship was another option. In Rebels season 2 the Seventh Sister was able to use Force Pull to hold the Phantom1 in place by herself while it was maintaining full thrusters, and only lost the tug of war because she got greedy and tried to close the bay doors at the same time. Considering this was a moment of desperation to live her not knowing what she was doing enough to pull or push herself to the hatch is not as insane as most of you fans think it is.

For me, it's like Luke Skywalker's original story was for absolutely nothing. He wanted to be a hero, to fight the empire and make the galaxy a better place. He failed. Completely. The empire? Still around by a new name. An evil Jedi/Darth Vader to enforce their will? Yep. Coruscant is destroyed, along with a few other planets, thanks to their super weapon. None of the "mystery boxes" Abrams loves panned out, as usual (LOST). Han Solo is dead. He and Leia didn't last. Luke failed completely. Leia is now gone. All to set up Mary Sue (i.e. Rey, who is perfect at everything). Rey is now both Luke Skywalker AND Han Solo. She's an awesome pilot of the Falcon with a Wookie sidekick AND the newest, bestest Jedi EVER. Is it ever explained how she somehow understands Wookie speak? No. Mary Sue. Luke learning the force, becoming a Jedi, was all for naught. The rebellion is now at it's nadir. The New Order has all but destroyed a handful of them. But that's ok. That was intended so that Rey can build them up again. Luke's story and reason for the entire trilogy was wasted so they can start all over again with Mary Sue. She will essentially have to train herself, because she only appeared to have a few days training under Luke. But that's ok, because there appears to be literally NOTHING this girl can't do better than anyone else. She has less training than Luke and she's standing toe to toe with Kylo and nearly winning. If only she could sing really well, she'd be textbook Mary Sue. Edited to add: Finn's story was WORTHLESS. Waste of time.
@sinistar99
@sinistar99 6 лет назад
Basically your whole argument is "The battle between good and evil was pointless because 40 years later the evil came back and the fight continues." It makes no sense. Luke didnt fail at all he won HIS battles during HIS TIME. His time is over and some of the whiny petulant fans cant deal with it. If Rey was a guy NO ONE would be calling him a "gary stu." And FINNs story is awesome. I could have done without all the scenes with the space horses, but other than that the movie was fantastic.
@niamhmorrissey2187
@niamhmorrissey2187 6 лет назад
"His time is over" You don't have to ruin a character just to make a new one look good. Why have Luke in this movie if he's gonna act the opposite way we knew him as, barely do any training for Rey, and just cower in fear and shame. All while Rey is gradually getting stronger and more powerful. Rey literally stands over Luke who is fallen to the ground with mud and rain all over him, and has a Lightsaber held at him. It's fan service that fails at fan servicing. And no, people aren't hating Rey because she's woman. If the SW fans were a bunch of woman-haters, then why is Ahsoka Tano considered one of the best SW characters outside of movies? Because she's a well written character, Rey isn't. Shes unnecessarily overpowered (wipes the floor with the main bad guy in the FIRST FUCKING MOVIE) Her entire adventure relies on convenience. She contradicts herself alot. (Giving Finn a hard time for not being willing to help, then a few minutes later runs away saying "I want no part in this!" She gets more and more powerful with the force despite barely any training. She has beaten literally EVERYONE that's tried to fight her.
@sinistar99
@sinistar99 6 лет назад
Justa Person Reys story isnt the boiler plate "heroes journey" she paid her dues on Jakku where she had to fight know how to build things etc. We never saw Indiana Jones take boxing lessons in a training montage with "eye of der tiger" and slowly learn how to beat up Nazis either but nobody called him a Gary Stu. Lukes force projection battle at the end was awesome they didn't "ruin his character" at all they developed it just like Obi Wan and Yoda toward their ends. I'd love to see an adventure with younger Luke but this wasn't it and wasn't meant to be it. Hes older than Obi Wan was in episode IV --which if made today would have people whining they "ruined him cause he just stood there and lost a lame light sabre fight."

@jonesta29
@jonesta29 6 лет назад
No, that is where a certain section of hate is coming from. It is the only part people who were totally ok with Disney turning SW into a children's film made to sell cute animal toys at every turn want to focus on. This movie has so many issues; bombs falling in space, popsicle Leia, two terrible characters on a pointless journey to find another terrible character, bad dialogue turning a once promising character in Poe into a complete moron who has to over explain thing to terrible character number 1, ridiculous amounts of misplaced humor that breaks from any sort of actual immersion into the plight of the resistance forces, unimaginative "lets just make things bigger" bad guys and weapons, and to top it all off did I mention the shameless money grab over children's toy style animals all over the place? I thought that the general plot and outcome of the movie was a perfectly acceptable place for the story to move. Luke never was some super Jedi, he was always flawed. Rey is still an awesome character and I thought Kylo Ren became a better character instead of the whiny Vader wannabe that he was in TFA. However, with all of the other issues here it was very hard to focus on the actual good parts of the film because they were overshadowed by all of the crap that was put in. It is a bad movie and that is unfortunate because it had moments where you could see that the bones of a decent/good movie were there.

I loathe people like this, being so arrogant that because you dislike something that means everyone must also dislike it because of course his opinion is the correct opinion, anyone who disagrees with his opinion is, to him, objectively wrong. He is saying this cant be the real kevin smith because the real kevin smith must surely have the same opinion as him, because he cant be wrong, its those who disagree with him that are wrong. Brett Hickmann I left the theater very "meh." I didn't hate it, some parts I liked. I have to watch a movie like this several times, but I could've done without the whole "Poe is just a hothead and if we would've told him the plan we could've cut out half the movie and focused on the interesting parts." There was zero reason why everyone wasn't just told the plan from the beginning. Should've been more Rey training instead of she's just a super badass after Luke gave her like 1.5 lessons.

Right. Star Wars has this wonderful roster of characters that people already care about and are already invested in, and this movie had the opportunity to delve into these characters develop them a bit more, and it just didn't. For example, Instead of having Admiral "It's a Trap" Ackbar who we know from the original trilogy and played a significant role in the Rebellion take over in Leia's absence (which would have made narrative as well as fan service sense), they brought in a new unheard of character, the pink haired vice admiral. Likewise, Lando Calrissian should still be alive and kickin', but he's nowhere to be seen. The new trilogy so far feels more like a soft reboot than a continuation of the story.
@BJ-bd5fc

Spoilers for those who havent watched it.. (And if you are reading this why haven't you) The reason Luke force projected himself onto the final Planet was to do the impossible. He was one man versus the might of the First Order. He did it to be the "Hero" that was needed and not just for that moment but for the future Generations. Which is why the kids at the end were another huge part of the story. They were showing that what he did reached across the galaxy to even the small folk. I loved the movie so much.

Snoke's near-final dialogue has an alternate interpretation: he wanted Kylo to strike him down. The conniving Supreme Leader was taunting Kylo. Kylo Ren: “I know what I have to do.” Snoke: “You think you can turn him. Pathetic Child. I cannot be betrayed. I cannot be beaten. I see his mind. I see his every intent. Yes. I see him turning the lightsaber to strike true. And now, foolish child, he ignites it and kills his true enemy.” To complete his training and fulfill his destiny, Kylo Ren had to kill his master (adoptive father figure/the past). Has Kylo Ren achieved a new level of strength and power? Was this a component of Snoke's master-plan? Luke is now one with the force. Is Snoke (Plageius?) also one with the force? Has Snoke achieved immortality? Is the game over? Is the quest for balance in the force one that must go on forever? There's more depth to this film than many Star Wars fans are accustomed to. Sincerely, a Trekkie
@seanmullan8527
@seanmullan8527 6 лет назад
Possibly. He may have jumped bodies into Kylo or Rey, but hasn't taken full control yet. Or perhaps there will (also?) be a final balancing in the force realm involving Luke, Snoke/Plageius?/The Prime Jedi?. If the next film is the end of a 9-film arc, there needs to be a conclusion to the over-arching story and themes. Something knocked the force out of balance and it must be restored. The force has been violently oscillating between dark and light. An equilibrium must be achieved. To bring things full circle, the resolution should reflect the mythology established in the prequel trilogy. It should also deal with the flaws of the Jedi Order and what drove their downfall... Original code: Emotion, yet peace. Ignorance, yet knowledge. Passion, yet serenity. Chaos, yet harmony. Death, yet the Force. Later version: There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no chaos, there is harmony. There is no death, there is the Force.

There IS a good reason why Luke didn't go to Crait in a physical form. If you remember, Luke says, "Nobody is ever really gone". While most people will (agreeably) see this as a reference to Han, or even himself as he will surely not survive what he knows he has to do. He is talking about Kylo Ren. He knows has to right the wrong he feels he caused and help turn Kylo back to the light. And the best way he can achieve that goal is to show him the power of the light side of the force. And to do so effectively without actually killing Kylo. Because that is what started (for better or for worse) the whole Kylo/Luke dichotomy. Luke knows that Rey is right about Kylo not being a lost cause.

I think the film tries to show his craft isn't going to make it (you see it crumpling) or at least cast doubt. But there is some potential of success in there so I get why some people don't appreciate why it's better she saves him. I think the point is that it would have been a wasted sacrifice either way. Just because they have the door shut doesn't mean they're safe forever. They would have found another way in, like they found another way out. It was a hopeless fight. A last desperate plan to try and buy time - but they were trapped as far as they knew. Finn still has a choice to live now and stay with his friends and hold out for a chance. Holdo, on the other hand, carries out her sacrifice because there is literally no other choice. The whole Resistance will die if she doesn't ram the ship. She can see it happening. Finn doesn't 'know' his sacrifice is the only chance (help may still come - and it does), he's just mad at them and full of righteous anger (like Poe at the start of the movie). Poe can see that it is better to retreat and conserve at that point, because he's learned his lesson from earlier in the film and he can see that they're all just gonna die, leaving everyone else with no protection. Survival is the key. The longer you hold out, the longer you keep the spark alive, you more chance you have it will catch into a fire. It's about hope. Is it a bit convoluted? Yes, to my mind. But it ultimately works if you go with it.

Luke in episode 8. Many complaints about 8. No point in arguing all of them because at this point you've already made up your mind. You like it you don't. Or you like it but it's not perfect. I can understand that. But after two viewings I must say to complain about Luke and complain 8 didn't honor or said an FU to the original trilogy is both wrong and in many ways childish. As well as calling Hamill a bad actor. Please. So complaints about Luke. Ok for all the "experts" on 4-6. Episode 4. Technically Han saved Luke from dying. One could argue he failed. Luke alone didn't defeat the Empire. The rebels as a whole did. Empire. Again HAN saves Luke from dying. Vader easily could have killed Luke but held back to try and recruit his son. Luke didn't listen to Yoda. Failed and made a mistake. Jedi. Luke grew in power. Beat Vader. Was no where near a match for Palpatine. Failed. He was being murdered and only his father saved him. Luke didnt win against Darth Sidious. In all 3 films Luke repeatdly fails and is saved by someone else. He made errors. He was flawed and didn't win anything on his own. Fast foward to episode 8. The LEGEND of him and the Jedi grew past what they actually were. As he told Rey take away the myth of the Jedi and making them deities. Their legacy was failure. They created powerful sith lords. They don't own the light or the force. That's Vanity and Hubris. The force will exist without the Jedi. Very smart writing. People complain about Luke hiding. He didn't hide. He failed his sister. His best friend. His nephew. The galaxy and the Jedi order. That kind of turmoil could and would send anyone into exile. The legend of Luke made him out to be this perfect unkillable person when in reality he wasn't. He couldn't defeat the empire single handed then nor the first order now. Great line. "Did you expect me to take on the entire first order with a laser sword"? Enter Crait: The resistance is done. Their all going to die. No one is coming. Luke saves the resistance. In facts it gets reborn. Poe and the rebels see Luke Skywalker, Jedi master go out and single handedly survive an onslaught that is impossble. He buys them all time to escape. For anyone whining about this. 7 movies. What movie did anyone from Yoda to Palpatine have that kind of power? Lifting an empty X-wing out of a swamp is vastly different then lifting 10 Guerilla ATAT. No saber could defect blasts of that size. Idc about books or comics. Even if Luke trained nonstop for 30 years. He is NOT a god. He's human. He's not Superman and it would have been beyond silly to think ONE single human can take on an entire fleet. But at the end his legend grew even more. Kids are playing Luke vs first order and already have been given tales of Luke Skywalker defeating the first order ALONE. This will travel through galaxy of Luke being able to take on Kylo Ren and the first order even though we all know it's false. But sometimes people need to be inspired. Much like believing a man can walk on water or turn water into wine. Kylo tells Rey the strain of her communicating with him would kill her from that distance. Luke shows how powerful he was projecting himself throughout the galaxy and interacted with Leia and Kylo. One could easily argue not constantly using the force is like a weakened muscle. Compare Obi wan in 3 then 4. Just after 18 years you see the level of power difference. What other film has any Jedi done that? None. If Luke died to Kylo Ren or Snoke people would have cried bad writing. If Luke did some elaborate CGI tossing around 100 ton machines battle it would have looked awful and made no sense. Luke may not have won the way YOU wanted. But he won. He is NOT the last Jedi. He saved the resistance. He gave the galaxy the spark it needed. He died a legend. Cry about Rian Johnson all day. Yoda was exactly how he was in Empire. Even using the original molds to create him. Luke had a perfect shot looking at 2 suns with tears in his eyes and becoming one with the force the exact same way both his masters did. I have yet to read a single comment offering a better ending then that.

Thanks man. However i was wrong. Googling the weight of an ATAT they estimate them at 600 tons. Like christ in Marvel comics the Hulk picks up around 100 tons. The HULK. Watching episode 8 Luke is standing in front of TEN. Of course i won't lie. The 10 year old in me is like OMG OMG Luke is going to beat them alll! But then I'm like oh wait no lol. Kevin wanted Luke to deflect blasts and hell we all did. But again blocking a bolt from a stromtroopers blaster is WAYYY different then a frigging 80 foot tall machine of death lol. And Kylo said fire EVERYTHING on that man. Yeah nothing in star wars is surviving that. i read comments like derp i EXPECTED Luke to pick up a star cruiser with 1 hand. I'm like dude grow up. Yes the force unleashed was a bad ass game. but starkiller technically altered the direction of the star destroyer and never "picked it up". He also wasn't fighting 10 of them. And I'm not saying the legends books are bad, but disney did make them non canon and however added stuff like force phantoms from the Dark empire comics to episode 8. Each time someone is like omg I hated luke he is soooo different. I'm like yes because I'm 36. You don't think shit i did at 16 i regret? At 26? you think i will be the same Chris in 20 years lol? Luke started episode 4 at 18. It's been 40 god dam years. Pushing 60 yeah he maybe different.

Luke couldn’t actually be on Crait because he had to deny Kylo Ren victory. Luke denied him that darkside catharsis while simultaneously protecting Ben Solo from the burden of killing yet another family member which would only have cemented his fall to the dark side. That’s how I interpreted it.

I could have sworn there was an off Han (get it?) comment in the original trilogy mentioning laser swords. I'm pretty sure they were referred to as laser swords during production of the originals, they probably only said lightsaber maybe three times in the three movies. Lightsaber really took off through the post-movie marketing than in the films. I wonder what they said in the scripts.
@AspieMediaBobby
@AspieMediaBobby 6 лет назад
@Sangtrone Pretty much Sith and Jedi use the terms "lightsaber" and sometimes "swords"(Which is confusing because in the Expanded Universe and this film we see people both Force-sensitive and non-Force sensitive using traditional medieval swords as well and after all what is "Star Wars" if not medieval times in space?) ,people in the Galaxy who have yet to have Jedi training say "laser swords".It`s pretty straightforward.

Force Awakens encouraged us to wonder who Rey's parents were. JJ told us that both parents were in that movie, so while everyone decided to obsess over Snoke, a throw away badguy, I was there to understand how the "space opera of a family" was going to continue to unfold. When they didn't reveal Phasma as mum (since she was technically the only woman who made sense, especially considering the dynamic with Kylo Ren, and the reason for emotionally distancing from family, etc), I lost interest in following the movies with any keen interest. They cannot expect cinema fans to care about an overarching plot, then prove that they will throw away the baton from director to director.

I felt that the Yoda that manifested in TLJ was an attempt at symbolism of "the happy buddha" Yoda had past to the other side, where foolish Mortal whims are of no consequence. His behavior mirrored a state of infinite joy or bliss, that one would obtain through infinite knowledge of becoming one with the force. Yoda was there to convince Luke to let go of his foolish mortal hang ups, let go of the tree and the pointless scribblings in the Jedi volumes. Yoda's behavior was instantly understandable to me; I was totally ok with that "happy buddha" scene. EDIT* terrible spelling and a word. Sorry, typed this on my phone late at night.

I think even Lucas called lightsabers "laserswords" once.. an even Anakin says it in TPM. But I like to think that Luke said lasersword because he distanced himself from the Jedi way and that lightsaber is manly a more mystical word for their weapon. It's like saying Soul Calibur is an old sword.
@rosvel92

It makes sense because all of Return of the Jedi and the OT trilogy as a whole, ended with Luke Skywalker throwing a sword; just like The Last Jedi started (that's how he redeems the sins of the father). So yeah, Luke hates the weapon, even if he kept it, it is totally implied it was a lifelong inner conflict where Luke kept throwing it away and picking it up, back and forth. Until he threw it for good. And yeah, JJ Abrams' Rise of Skywalker, the single most stupid character betraying moment is where Luke picks up the saber, that moments he picks the sins of tge father all over again, Rey is damned to repeat them. Abrams doesn't undetstand Star Wars, nor Luke.

He can't speak his mind he now has a career again. If he bashes anyone (like back in the day speaking the truth on Peter Guber). Still a fan but Kevin, you sound like you're the PR clean-up fan. You actually used your friendship, which you once wrote about so beautifully--particular in a series of blog posts--to get "feels" for Batman v Superman because someone you used to know was in the cast. I understand you gotta thin line... but go read some Ebert reviews. You are entitled to your opinion and we want to here your ideas about what you would have done differently. That is a big compliment given the vast number of people with theories, etc. "Just show us something we haven't seen before." "If you can show me something new, you sold me." "I will forever hold that film to my heart for that one minute." Really. Wtf? I'm a huge Star Wars fan. I'm a big Kevin Smith fan. It is as simple as that. "Hamilton" -- If you stand for nothing/What do you fall for? vs. "Talk less, smile more/Don't let them know what you're against or what your for." Don't wait for it, man. You're back so drop the de-valuing and speak what you think and if someone takes something out of context we'll correct them. BTW I'm also a fan of The Misfits, Samhain and a massive fan of the first 4 Danzig albums. And everything else he has done since has been garbage in comparison. Your either a clap clap clap fap fap fap fan boy... or you are critically acclaimed director and writer Kevin Smith. Hollywood has its eyes on you again. Don't lose your fan base by becoming the new Disney Pimp. At least Chris Hardwick got PAID. Drew McWeeny wrote a great piece about this after Lucasfilm denied him permission to go on an AICN tour because of his comments about the prequels.That man also jumped ship from that site a long time ago and quite abruptly so, not knowing him, I think that's a sign he's a good guy (I'm dodging the elephant in the room to stay on topic). With respect and love and best wishes to you and yours for 2018. And remember, you don't know me. Who cares? Because Star Wars "fans" are cancerous little cretons who shit their R2D2 panties every time someone likes a movie they don't?

Anakin said "Laser Sword" in TPM. Also, that's what Lucas called them a lot... which is weird.

Didn't Hon call them that too when criticizing the force in a new Hope?

I think he just called them "Ancient Weapons."

Not really that weird. It's called a lightsaber, but laser sword is an apt description.

Lol right? I can understand liking the movie..fine that’s fair...but if you know movies like Kevin, and are a SW fan, and had NO negatives...idk man idk if I trust that. To think EVERY one of these scenes was so great...Snoke, all the Rose scenes, Luke’s death, Rey’s “training”, etc. Come onnnn man.

not a one! He'd done it differently on all accounts, but it's great as it is!

He did mention some, but honestly I'm one of those that didn't really find any faults. I found the pacing of the 1st act a little wonky on first viewing and I didn't really understand the whole Holdo situation, but on 2nd & 3rd viewing those issues were smoothed over for me. Not saying you have to agree, just sayin that folks finding this to be a near-perfect blockbuster certainly exist.

Not here to rattle any cages, i didn't hate, and i didn't love it either. But this film was very weak compared to TFA, the pace was off, the editing was sketchy, there were huge plot holes. I'm not here with pitchfork in hand, nor am i one of those 'not real fan who didn't understand', or a nostalgia nerd. Starwars has been my life since i watched the original in '77, I've collected so much merch over the years and now my kids are coming of age they're getting into it too. I had my 5 minutes of fame a few years back for making the first Han Solo in carbonite fridge freezer! I live and breath it! But the two main issues i have with the movie is the storyline has been copied from Battlestar Galactica (2014) season one episode called '33', with a couple of minor changes. But secondly, it just misses that magic, that feeling. Real fans know what I'm talking about here. I don't care that they've turned my childhood hero into a coward, i care because somewhere along the line, someone with approval status stopped caring, and signed this story off giving it a green light. I'm sure I'm going to get a bashing for this, and like that individual who approved the story, i don't care either.

Ian Semonin the humor was brutal in TLJ. Punchlines were teed up and poorly written, seemingly by a kid without a sense of humor. VERY bad script all-around
