I think in The Phantom Menace Anakin told Qui-Gon that he “saw his lazer sword. Only a Jedi carry them”

I so wanted to love this movie. But I walked out of the theater feeling gut punched and disappointed. We got to see Luke come into his own in the OT but never got to see that Luke be the Jedi we knew him to be. Instead we got a tired, bitter old man. This was not the man who brought his father back from the dark side. This was Jake Skywalker, not Luke Skywalker.

It's sad that Mark had more action as Cock Knocker than Luke.

Everytime we get a new Star Wars, a subsection of the viewers come away saying "Never again. This ruined Star Wars." ....but they always come back...and they hang around for years trying to make everyone else hate it because they hated it. So come on guys. If you didn't like it, you didn't like it. Thats fine. But you need to accept that other people DID like it. Trying to drag their enjoyment down because you didn't enjoy the film makes you petty as fuck. Just be content with your own opinions and let other people like what they like.

For me, it's like Luke Skywalker's original story was for absolutely nothing. He wanted to be a hero, to fight the empire and make the galaxy a better place. He failed. Completely. The empire? Still around by a new name. An evil Jedi/Darth Vader to enforce their will? Yep. Coruscant is destroyed, along with a few other planets, thanks to their super weapon. None of the "mystery boxes" Abrams loves panned out, as usual (LOST). Han Solo is dead. He and Leia didn't last. Luke failed completely. Leia is now gone. All to set up Mary Sue (i.e. Rey, who is perfect at everything). Rey is now both Luke Skywalker AND Han Solo. She's an awesome pilot of the Falcon with a Wookie sidekick AND the newest, bestest Jedi EVER. Is it ever explained how she somehow understands Wookie speak? No. Mary Sue. Luke learning the force, becoming a Jedi, was all for naught. The rebellion is now at it's nadir. The New Order has all but destroyed a handful of them. But that's ok. That was intended so that Rey can build them up again. Luke's story and reason for the entire trilogy was wasted so they can start all over again with Mary Sue. She will essentially have to train herself, because she only appeared to have a few days training under Luke. But that's ok, because there appears to be literally NOTHING this girl can't do better than anyone else. She has less training than Luke and she's standing toe to toe with Kylo and nearly winning. If only she could sing really well, she'd be textbook Mary Sue. Edited to add: Finn's story was WORTHLESS. Waste of time.

All the hate is from the years of speculation of how Luke would be used and how powerful he would be. It ended up feeling like finding an old Porsche spider in mint condition in some old dudes garage and just driving it in 1st gear around the cul de sac and then immediately parking it forever.

Rey has the books. Yoda knows it and told Luke in a way where he didn’t quite get it. Shows the books at the end on the falcon.

Loved your comments at 22 minutes on Luke, R2, and seeing that message from Princess Leia. This gets right to the emotion I felt having seen A New Hope in 1977 and taking my kids to see The Last Jedi this past weekend. Well said, Kevin!

Spoilers for those who havent watched it.. (And if you are reading this why haven't you) The reason Luke force projected himself onto the final Planet was to do the impossible. He was one man versus the might of the First Order. He did it to be the "Hero" that was needed and not just for that moment but for the future Generations. Which is why the kids at the end were another huge part of the story. They were showing that what he did reached across the galaxy to even the small folk. I loved the movie so much.

OMG Kevin, i love how emotional you got about the R2-Luke reunion. I adored that moment too. I felt a little sorry for R2 in this film and that he was kind of left out of it a bit. I know its supposed to be moving on from the originals but that cheeky little guy (as you so rightly say) was the heart of the saga

Never thought about it till you said it, but yeah even the moment of silence after the light speed kamikaze would've been a fitting thing if it was Leia who piloted it.

This video provides the basis for an excellent drinking game. Every time Kev says “man”, take a shot. Every time he says “...and shit like that” take two.

Snoke's near-final dialogue has an alternate interpretation: he wanted Kylo to strike him down. The conniving Supreme Leader was taunting Kylo. Kylo Ren: “I know what I have to do.” Snoke: “You think you can turn him. Pathetic Child. I cannot be betrayed. I cannot be beaten. I see his mind. I see his every intent. Yes. I see him turning the lightsaber to strike true. And now, foolish child, he ignites it and kills his true enemy.” To complete his training and fulfill his destiny, Kylo Ren had to kill his master (adoptive father figure/the past). Has Kylo Ren achieved a new level of strength and power? Was this a component of Snoke's master-plan? Luke is now one with the force. Is Snoke (Plageius?) also one with the force? Has Snoke achieved immortality? Is the game over? Is the quest for balance in the force one that must go on forever? There's more depth to this film than many Star Wars fans are accustomed to. I’m a 47 year old man and I totally get the nostalgia and emotional stuff. Mark Hamill was excellent.

Luke said he came to the island to die and he was never gonna leave. But he shows he's the Legendary Luke by his actions at THAT moment not the sarcastic version he's ashamed of. Thats the way i saw it. Alot of for shadowing in this movie.

There IS a good reason why Luke didn't go to Crait in a physical form. If you remember, Luke says, "Nobody is ever really gone". While most people will (agreeably) see this as a reference to Han, or even himself as he will surely not survive what he knows he has to do. He is talking about Kylo Ren. He knows has to right the wrong he feels he caused and help turn Kylo back to the light. And the best way he can achieve that goal is to show him the power of the light side of the force. And to do so effectively without actually killing Kylo. Because that is what started (for better or for worse) the whole Kylo/Luke dichotomy. Luke knows that Rey is right about Kylo not being a lost cause.

“That’s how we’re going to win, not by fighting what we hate. But saving the ones we love” All while in the background of the scene The First Order edges ever closer to destroying the remaining resistance members. Completely contradicting her ridiculous statement.

George Lucas always referred to "laser swords." Alec Guinness thought "lightsaber" sounded better :)

R2 projecting Leia, Yoda showing up and Mark Hamill's performance as Luke Skywalker made very happy. Carries Leia was great.

I'm really happy the kylo Luke scene really cemented Luke Skywalker Master Jedi as a legend. The kids reenacting the fight was amazing

You are quite literally the John Gruden of movie analysis, lol. There’s not one football player he doesn’t love, there’s not one movie you don’t love to emotional movement. You two are kindred spirits!

Luke in episode 8. Many complaints about 8. No point in arguing all of them because at this point you've already made up your mind. You like it you don't. Or you like it but it's not perfect. I can understand that. But after two viewings I must say to complain about Luke and complain 8 didn't honor or said an FU to the original trilogy is both wrong and in many ways childish. As well as calling Hamill a bad actor. Please. So complaints about Luke. Ok for all the "experts" on 4-6. Episode 4. Technically Han saved Luke from dying. One could argue he failed. Luke alone didn't defeat the Empire. The rebels as a whole did. Empire. Again HAN saves Luke from dying. Vader easily could have killed Luke but held back to try and recruit his son. Luke didn't listen to Yoda. Failed and made a mistake. Jedi. Luke grew in power. Beat Vader. Was no where near a match for Palpatine. Failed. He was being murdered and only his father saved him. Luke didnt win against Darth Sidious. In all 3 films Luke repeatdly fails and is saved by someone else. He made errors. He was flawed and didn't win anything on his own. Fast foward to episode 8. The LEGEND of him and the Jedi grew past what they actually were. As he told Rey take away the myth of the Jedi and making them deities. Their legacy was failure. They created powerful sith lords. They don't own the light or the force. That's Vanity and Hubris. The force will exist without the Jedi. Very smart writing. People complain about Luke hiding. He didn't hide. He failed his sister. His best friend. His nephew. The galaxy and the Jedi order. That kind of turmoil could and would send anyone into exile. The legend of Luke made him out to be this perfect unkillable person when in reality he wasn't. He couldn't defeat the empire single handed then nor the first order now. Great line. "Did you expect me to take on the entire first order with a laser sword"? Enter Crait: The resistance is done. Their all going to die. No one is coming. Luke saves the resistance. In facts it gets reborn. Poe and the rebels see Luke Skywalker, Jedi master go out and single handedly survive an onslaught that is impossble. He buys them all time to escape. For anyone whining about this. 7 movies. What movie did anyone from Yoda to Palpatine have that kind of power? Lifting an empty X-wing out of a swamp is vastly different then lifting 10 Guerilla ATAT. No saber could defect blasts of that size. Idc about books or comics. Even if Luke trained nonstop for 30 years. He is NOT a god. He's human. He's not Superman and it would have been beyond silly to think ONE single human can take on an entire fleet. But at the end his legend grew even more. Kids are playing Luke vs first order and already have been given tales of Luke Skywalker defeating the first order ALONE. This will travel through galaxy of Luke being able to take on Kylo Ren and the first order even though we all know it's false. But sometimes people need to be inspired. Much like believing a man can walk on water or turn water into wine. Kylo tells Rey the strain of her communicating with him would kill her from that distance. Luke shows how powerful he was projecting himself throughout the galaxy and interacted with Leia and Kylo. One could easily argue not constantly using the force is like a weakened muscle. Compare Obi wan in 3 then 4. Just after 18 years you see the level of power difference. What other film has any Jedi done that? None. If Luke died to Kylo Ren or Snoke people would have cried bad writing. If Luke did some elaborate CGI tossing around 100 ton machines battle it would have looked awful and made no sense. Luke may not have won the way YOU wanted. But he won. He is NOT the last Jedi. He saved the resistance. He gave the galaxy the spark it needed. He died a legend. Cry about Rian Johnson all day. Yoda was exactly how he was in Empire. Even using the original molds to create him. Luke had a perfect shot looking at 2 suns with tears in his eyes and becoming one with the force the exact same way both his masters did. I have yet to read a single comment offering a better ending then that.

Anakin refers to a Light-sabre as "Laser-sword" in Phantom Menace. It's almost like Luke purposely used that term to mock Rey's youth & naivety.

I got the impression that Luke wanted to help, but also wanted to die on the island. He helped them escape, and then joined the force in peace. As you said, I think we'll see him again.

I watched again the movie after several years and saw your review : I really think that “laser sword” was a slur, written on purpose to point out Luke’s rejection on what he thinks is a stupid plan. (Btw: loved how much you appreciate to show us your high - skill chewie impression)

The term laser sword was what George Lucas always called them in interviews so I think that was a little wink and a nod to him.

Force Awakens encouraged us to wonder who Rey's parents were. JJ told us that both parents were in that movie, so while everyone decided to obsess over Snoke, a throw away badguy, I was there to understand how the "space opera of a family" was going to continue to unfold. When they didn't reveal Phasma as mum (since she was technically the only woman who made sense, especially considering the dynamic with Kylo Ren, and the reason for emotionally distancing from family, etc), I lost interest in following the movies with any keen interest. They cannot expect cinema fans to care about an overarching plot, then prove that they will throw away the baton from director to director.

I felt that the Yoda that manifested in TLJ was an attempt at symbolism of "the happy buddha" Yoda had past to the other side, where foolish Mortal whims are of no consequence. His behavior mirrored a state of infinite joy or bliss, that one would obtain through infinite knowledge of becoming one with the force. Yoda was there to convince Luke to let go of his foolish mortal hang ups, let go of the tree and the pointless scribblings in the Jedi volumes. Yoda's behavior was instantly understandable to me; I was totally ok with that "happy buddha" scene. EDIT* terrible spelling and a word. Sorry, typed this on my phone late at night.

The thing that bugs me about fans going on about Rey's parents.... no other Jedi/Sith had force wielding parents. Other than the Skywalkers, so why does she have to be related? Also seeing what happens when they have kids.... maybe there's a reason why they say Jedi can't have kids haha. It's for the best really

Coming back to this video a year later... i still don't get it man. They destroyed the Wars buddy. Paper thin characters, plot, and nothing but flash with notes of nostalgia. Rogue One was better, and people give me shit for saying that, saying THAT is just nostalgia lol. No, that was good character development... the nostalgia aids that, not the other way around.

The reason Luke didn't take his X-Wing and physically fly there? If you look carefully, the door to his hut is made from parts of the X-Wing. That thing is going nowhere. He's on the island for good.

I think even Lucas called lightsabers "laserswords" once.. an even Anakin says it in TPM. But I like to think that Luke said lasersword because he distanced himself from the Jedi way and that lightsaber is manly a more mystical word for their weapon. It's like saying Soul Calibur is an old sword.

Laser Sword was used by Anakin in The Phantom Menace. It was also the original term that George Lucas gave a lightsaber.

Luke didn't dream of piloting for the rebel alliance. He dreamed of joining the Imperial Academy in spite of his negative feelings for the Empire.

Sooo many people are forgetting the teachings of yoda, it is too bad they did not do more of this in the movie. On that same note, many fans are forgetting his teachings also from Revenge of the Sith: "Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you, who transform into the force. Mourn them do not, miss them do not, attachment leads to jealousy, the shadow of greed that is."

I love how people are claiming that this multimillionaire has sold his deepest love out for some money. This is Kevin fucking Smith. His name goes synonymously with Star Wars. He's an an authority in this topic. Not the authority. But an authority. He says something you don't like, he must be getting paid, right? It couldn't be his honest opinion or anything.

You know what, I'm 28 and I've just given Into actually watching star wars from original trilogy onwards (I'll get to the prequels at some point) and I didn't like last Jedi, it had its cool moments yes was it a mess? Yes but I'm actually glad Kevin still enjoyed it. I like fast and the furious and I can admit there's a whole lot going wrong in those movies but they don't stop me from enjoying them.

Anyone else think that the "Tracker" looked a lot like a flux capacitor?

I liken this to Man of Steel for me. MoS wasn't a bad movie, but it just didn't feel like Superman to me. TLJ similarly, isn't a bad movie, but some of the characters don't feel in character to me. But I can live this as it is and still look forward to where they go next.

Not here to rattle any cages, i didn't hate, and i didn't love it either. But this film was very weak compared to TFA, the pace was off, the editing was sketchy, there were huge plot holes. I'm not here with pitchfork in hand, nor am i one of those 'not real fan who didn't understand', or a nostalgia nerd. Starwars has been my life since i watched the original in '77, I've collected so much merch over the years and now my kids are coming of age they're getting into it too. I had my 5 minutes of fame a few years back for making the first Han Solo in carbonite fridge freezer! I live and breath it! But the two main issues i have with the movie is the storyline has been copied from Battlestar Galactica (2014) season one episode called '33', with a couple of minor changes. But secondly, it just misses that magic, that feeling. Real fans know what I'm talking about here. I don't care that they've turned my childhood hero into a coward, i care because somewhere along the line, someone with approval status stopped caring, and signed this story off giving it a green light. I'm sure I'm going to get a bashing for this, and like that individual who approved the story, i don't care either.
