What tough resilient people they are. I wish them many blessings and prosperous lives.. I'm loving the documentaries! You've done a lot of work to make them happen.

You can tell these men that I am a shepherd who lives in Australia, and I don't watch my herd with a computer. I have a horse, six sheep and about 20 chickens. I am a widow and I own about 20 acres of land. Life is tough for me here, but not as hard as it is for you. My prayers are with you.

It's heartbreaking to see the poor men in such terrible conditions they are trapped in the harsh nightmare of addiction to opioid poison it's such a shame but I do sympathise with them a great deal !

Years ago I watched a video about this tribe and it makes me sad to see their lives have become so hard. The opium dealer isn’t worried because he can just keep making the debt high enough so that he will then get a bride. Addicts should be forced out with nothing or go through withdrawals and get better.

Thank you to the whole team of producer for this insightful documentary. Life was hard, simple and challenging; however everyone looks healthier in body, mind and spirit comparing to the people in many western countries - materialistic way of life, drug, fashion, celebrity culture, mundane talk shows, magazines and newspapers on fame, wealth, football, Red Bull, formula 1.... Material wealth does not bring true happiness. People who can endure difficulties in life such as cold, scarcity of food, simple living ...will be able to survive in next life.

This life is too hard on every one of the poor women. This life has broken the men and they need to consider change for the sake of their children. Child birth mortality rate at 1/3 ! Mother's dead after the first birth ! Come on ! They need modern health care modern medicine how can a father watch his children writhing in pain what about dental health !

Nomads who want to cling to their lives should be encouraged, not transformed into something they don’t want to be. What Christianity has to do with this escapes me totally (see other comments). It is not excluded that Christian nomads existed at the time of the Aksumite kings (early christianity) in the eastern African Sahel, although today they tend to be Muslim. Nomads being Christian or not did not prevent states to try to sedentarize them at all cost. Yet real nomads do not care about state boundaries and are very protective of their way of life and their customs. Have you tried catching and keeping a wild bird? Eventually, it might languish and die in its “golden, modern” cage. That’s why nomads always try to break free. Maybe these nomads’ lifestyle is more “modern” than the most modern of all amenities you can offer them. I don’t want to live like a nomad, but for sure nomads have one thing or two to teach us… irrespective of their religion or non-religion.

I don’t understand when they say they are poor, but they have beautiful material for their clothes and they wear those big long scarves over their heads and all weather in the wind and they waste flower. I know it’s a tradition but if you don’t have the money for food, I would think that they’d have to change their ways so it confuses me how they spend their money not to mention the poor people who are on opium. They can’t figure out how to get off of it. It’s sad. I know what happens all around the world.

With all due respect, I must ask how even the fortunate can get 100 sheep for a marriage? It was said that it was so much less. Who decided such a thing? If so few can do it, reel-back the standard.

After watching this video for 22 minutes, there's no doubt these people are being instructed by the video makers to "pump up the drama". Ordinary stuff these people been doing for hundreds of years suddenly becomes a life-threatening situation which must be discussed and explained, endlessly. That's when I decided this video is just a lot of "drama" that was never there until Slice Full Doc came on the scene. That kind of manipulation of my emotions is evil! My sorrow goes out to these folks that they were being used for the "gains" the video makers get while making this video. The video makers gains are based on lies and exaggerations. That's the real sorrow. By the way. Somewhere in past lives, I was living their way of life. These people have a bond between each other which is much much greater any pain or suffering they get along the way. There bonds are their strong medicine to soothe any-thing you guys call "hardships".

It is forbidden to exchange women as wives, swapping one woman for another, according to our village customs from the distant past. the Sheihk annulled the contracts of the two exchanged women, obliging their husbands to remarry them and provide their wives with their rightful dowry, even if they had children.

my heart just broke for that family who's father and husband is smoking opium. life is tough over there and he is making it even harder for them but he cant help it his addiction is in control i hope he gets better

This is how it was in the UK the past too - half of children not surviving to age 5. One of my great grandmothers had 9 children and only 3 survived to age 21. I have visited the grave stones of all the dead babies. By other great grandmother had 11 - 10 survived - but two husbands died. There was more death. In the film it says a third of women die in childbirth - it was the same in the UK until more recent times. I saw this programme 10 years ago. It would be lovely to know how they are all doing today in 2024. I wish them well and hope they can all given up opium and cigarettes.

I remember life like this on my grandparents farm in the 1960s . No electricity, no running water . This was in the Bosnian mountains. A very hard life . But this is way harder .

I cannot imagine how women manage to live in these harsh conditions. Great respect to them.

For those wondering when this film was made, it came out in 2012 with the title "Prisonniers de l'Himalaya" (Prisoners of the Himalayas).

We have a village called Ulupamir(Great Pamir) in Van province of Turkey. They are relatives of Kyrgyz people in Turkey.

Just viewed a video about poverty in the USA...most of it caused by drugs additiction....in the old community of this Kyrgyz people it seems to be the same......

Beautiful documentary

This life seems quite harsh & the women seems to do much of the work, so you really got to ask does a culture that doesn't respect or value its women deserve rescuing & preserving?

I am not judging anyone especially this Afghan Kyrgish. They really need intervention or help but the saddest part is that they are in Afghanistan. The drugs problem are what worries me most. Whether it be America or Japan every drug users faced the same problem. The household, children and wives are affected. Can you imagine some of them never seen a doctor or any sort of medical practitioners in there lives.100 sheep's for a wives is unattainable for most of them. Please God help this lovely community. This is the first time I hear Kyrgyz (Kirghiz) speak Farsi/ Dari among themselves. The ones I met in China spoke Kirghiz which was remarkably close to Kazakh.

Culturally is very interesting, but when you don’t progress and improve your lives with new thought, invention, sciences, medicine, etc then this is what happens to ones displaced group of ppl. High mortality rates, women stuck to antiquated practices with feeling no value other than what they been taught by the “men” eventually this group will disappear. Sad that they are so stubborn about change that they’ll die to practices that are extremely antiquated. And then add on top of that, drug abuse…….

Full of beauty be it ups and downs in life, the Kyrgyz people are very dedicated and enjoy a solid and concrete bodage within their tribal life style, in simplicity they are a sweet pack of people who should be adored with respect.

But our mother ,grandmom never saw da door of hospital for giving birth..even im not born in hospital..no women died in our place like dm..our woman gave birth on da way from paddy field ..tie up new born in her.chest n wood in da basket back..now many hospital s dr...north east part of india..chinese border

Their sheep/wife trading under these circumstances is their obvious downfall.

Like many of us, we would love to keep hold of our culture and traditions, so i can see how even outside help may be rejected by these people... they have managed for so long, forever.... their lifestyle and ways are precious and finely balanced and grounded in history.... however, among other evils, such as war and the persecution that they have endured, the introduction of opiates is just pure evil....look how it devastating them.... typical approach to destroying us all.... 😢 I despair...

I saw this same kind of documentary 4 years ago? It is really up to them; everyone knew they deserved "help", and perhaps the best way of helping if they don't want to go back to Kyrgiztan is helicopter drops of supplementary food for the herds. The Kuchii are an insular group with more connection into Pakistan, but have a far richer area for grazing as they migrate north-south instead of east-west. This is the other tribe they would have most in common with as far as hardship or empathy, but the Kuchii have much more Pamiri features and bloodlines than an isolated Waki tribe. Personally I think the Waki need to stop seeing themselves as a separate group of Kyrgiz and start seeing themselves more as a part of the family of man. I don't think anyone is going to be in a hurry to take over their corridor grazing lands if they make an exit for awhile.
