On August 10, 1995, the Dodgers forfeited a game to the St. Louis Cardinals when fans in Los Angeles continued throwing souvenir baseballs onto the playing field despite warnings from the umpires to stop. www.closecallsports.com/2019/...
At first base that night was NL Umpire Bob Davidson, supporting Crew Chief Jim Quick behind home plate, with Bill Hohn and Larry Poncino rounding out the umpiring lineup.
During Episode 1 of The Plate Meeting Podcast at CloseCallSports.com, Bob recounted the eventful evening, including Quick's ejections of Eric Karros, Tommy Lasorda, and Raul Mondesi, and multiple play stoppages as the pre-game promotional giveaway-mockup Rookie of the Year baseballs in honor of Dodgers starting pitcher Hideo Nomo-wound up on the field as fans showed their disproval of the umpires' calls that night, culminating in the rarest of the rare: an enforcement of baseball's forfeit rule at the Major League level.
Once back at their Pasadena hotel, Davidson and Quick called up National League President Len Coleman to inform him of the news ("You guys did WHAT?"), while the next day, the San Francisco Giants-LA's rival-gave the umpire crew a standing ovation.

I was there at the game. I still have the ticket stub. I was 8 years old and was about to throw my ball from the loge level. As I was about to throw, my grandfather grabbed my hand and said, "You throw that ball and I'll never bring you here again." Little did I know, we were witnessing history.

I was there too, 12 years old, my 2nd Dodger game. Similar to you but my mom looked at me and my best friend and just said "No!"... She put them in her purse, that was it! Still remember that Plastic ball,

I liked that clip from The Naked Gun where Leslie Nielsen, who was dressed as an umpire, tried to eject Joe West from the game. West: "You can't eject an umpire!" Frank Dreben: "All right, YOU'RE out of here!" Lol.

FYI, in MLB under OBR rules ONLY the plate umpire can forfeit a game. The crew chief has NO rule book authority to do so. He does have real life influence and I'm sure the PU umpire did this with an OK from the crew chief. At the amateur level we are usually working two person crews and the "crew chief" is usually the one with either more time in service, or maybe more importantly, more respect. Either way, the PU has the sole power to forfeit under OBR rules. I did it twice in over 3K games. In each instance I was left with no alternative. I still don't feel right about it to this day.

People need to respect the crews that work the fields and they work hard to keep all mlb fields clean and people are not doing the right thing by throwing baseballs and trash on the field and people are ruining the game for all the players as well by doing that.

Bob Davidson actually was very professional with this interview. It’s his obnoxiousness and jealous attitude with Charlie Manuel and the fan in Milwaukee that gets him in the most critical of trouble

Don't know about that. With the security as you enter the stadium these days, they probably would not allow you in with a ball.

And of course he doesn't mention that it was the terrible umping that cause the fans to be upset in the first place, especially on the last one in the ninth inning. Bottom line, the fans may not have been right for throwing balls on the field, but they sure as hell had every right to be pissed at the umping in that game.

I was at this game. Six of the 9 Cardinals players on the field when the fans started throwing balls were killed. The other 3 suffered severe brain damage. I just remember all of the brain matter all over the field.

Would have been a nice video, but the host had to ruin it with disastrous choices in the use of B-Roll. A black screen with the audio would have been preferable.
