The Last Night of The Proms - Royal Albert Hall

Many people's perception of the Proms is taken from the Last Night, although this concert is very different from the others. It usually takes place on the second Saturday in September, and is broadcast in the UK on BBC Radio 3, and on BBC2 (first half) and BBC1 (second half). The concert is traditionally in a lighter, 'winding-down' vein, with popular classics being followed by a series of British patriotic pieces in the second half of the concert. This sequence traditionally includes Edward Elgar's "Pomp & Circumstance March No. 1" (to part of which "Land of Hope and Glory" is sung) and Henry Wood's "Fantasia on British Sea Songs", followed by Thomas Arne's "Rule, Britannia!". However, the "Fantasia" did not feature from 2008 to 2011,[citation needed] though "Rule, Britannia!" has retained its place in the programme in its own right. The full "Fantasia" re-appeared in 2012, but was again absent from the 2013 concert. The concert concludes with Hubert Parry's "Jerusalem" (a setting of a poem by William Blake), and the British national anthem, in recent years in an arrangement by Benjamin Britten. The repeat of the Elgar March at the Last Night can be traced to the spontaneous audience demand for a double encore at its premiere at a 1901 Proms concert. The closing sequence of the second half became fully established in 1954 during Sargent's tenure as chief conductor of the Proms. The Prommers have made a tradition of singing "Auld Lang Syne" after the end of the concert, but it was not included in the programme until 2015

I am a Brit who used to attend the Summer concerts including the last night when I was young in the 1950's. The conductors then were Sir Malcolm Sargent, John Barberoli and Klemperer. The concerts in those days were confined to the Hall, no screens. I used to sit on the floor in the center where they removed the chairs for the last night! We listened to the same pieces, Land of Hope and Glory, Jerusalem , etc and loved it. I have lived the USA since 1961, but still miss London. I lived in Mayfair and could walk across Hyde Park to listen to the Summer concerts. I paid two shillings and sixpence to get in and sit in the Gods. I went through WW2 in the UK and saw the Battle of Britain in progress. I have always been so proud of my country.

In fact William the Conqueror made it illegal to be a serf ( slave) in the Domesday book in 1089 but Britain didn't have the might until the 1800s to abolish slavery until our Royal Navy was the most powerful Navy on the earth. As for slavery you should check the history books the Arabs actually invented slavery and enslaved Europeans and Africans into their version of slavery 1400 years ago. Africans had tribal wars on Africa from which they took prisoners as slaves and sold them to Barbary Pirates who shipped them to the middle East. The Barbary pirates also stole Europeans including Britons from the shores of Europe and Britain. On fact rule Britannia is a song of freedom from Britons being enslaved by the Barbary pirates because we did have the largest most powerful Navy on the planet. I'm all for doing part one year by year; but part two should be the greatest hits. And I would restrict the whole evening to the Brit faves - medleys and singalongs the whole night thru up until the last 45 mins which should be a relatively staple diet of the classics. For mine - I am not interested in List or Rachmaninov on the last night - I would rather hear a bit of Monty Python and Oliver with the patriotic ending.

This kind of cultural celebration is highly endangered in this day and age. There is a large group of individuals in the UK, who would gladly see an end to this kind of patriotism. The same people who'd love to see statues of Churchill torn down. We need to uphold our patriotism and love of tradition in the face of an insidious tide, nay Tsunami, of hateful political correctness.

@@F4Wildcat One official definition of nationalism - and the original definition, but it's been changed in the last few years due to political agendas: "advocacy of or support for the political independence of a particular nation or people." @@hilakummins3104 I’m going to have to disagree with you on one point. Money has little to do with lack of education in our country and everything to do with the dropping of all standards and disciplines. There is almost an intentional downgrading of the standards to accommodate people who won’t/can’t meet even the lowest of low bars. I was in education I know what I’m talking about. It’s now just push them thru the system, come hell or high water...and never ask anything of them.

First you gave the tech geeks, who find it not up to snuff in filming or editing, then there are the jealous thumbs downs, these are people who are envious of someone else being there, or documenting the moment and wish there were there...jealousy can be for unlimited reasons. Then there are the Remainers. Who have a disdain for anything patriotic, they will are be giving a thumbs down. There are many reasons for a thumbs down. But those are the big 3.
