In 1992, Michael Mann crafted a film that stands the test of time as not only an accurate period piece, exciting action flick, thoughtful romance story, but as just an all around incredible movie. This is of course thanks in no small part to it's gorgeous cinematography, so lets examine that today. Channel theme music by ‪@followthefiddledavidbathen6012‬

Ah man... I hate to sound old and nostalgic, but I will stand by saying that the mid-90's was the one of the best periods for film. Movies like The Last Of The Mohicans, Rob Roy, Heat, Goodfellas, Shawshank... epics, with great story telling and deep character development, good editing and pacing, and good, realistic special effects. They just don't make many like that any more...

Last of the Mohicans is one of my all time favourite films, and the score is one of the best, if not the best, score of all time. I get chills every time I hear 'The Kiss' theme.

This is one of my very favorite films. I always end up comparing other films to this when it comes to cinematography and fight choreography.

"The Last of the Mohicans" by Michael Mann indeed is one of my all-time favourite films. You already pointed out the reasons. It deserves deeper analysis concerning its cinematography. Have you ever considered making longer videos on this topic? As a special edition, I mean.

I saw this movie when I was 13, and that age, I thought it was boring. I think this one definitely deserves a rewatch. Also, the meaning you were able to pull out of these scenes was something else! It seems like there are a thousand and one techniques that the layperson wouldn’t necessarily be conscious of, but enhances the viewing experience, nevertheless. Thanks for another great vid, Eric! 🖖😀

A bus? Come on, people! Everyone knows Native Americans of that period and before preferred American muscle cars. Even Pocahontas had a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Superbird! I do recall it being credited for period accuracy, but there were also some significant deviations from the book.

Thank you, THANK YOU for doing this! Michael Mann has made a number of hugely influential movies, and I believe this gem really is one of them. Even though it has not really had the credit it deserves, this was a real 'before-and-after' movie in terms of cinematic impact. The outdoor cinematography was so influential, that you can often guess which films were made before or (more importantly) AFTER the Last of the Mohicans by the style of the outdoor photography. The trouble he took over the general look of the movie (including costumes, hair etc.) has also paid off, because it has aged brilliantly, and still looks very fresh. I have absolutely loved this movie since seeing it as a teenager at the cinema (several times) when it was released, and many, many, MANY times since. And (to me) Hawkeye's run to save Cora from being scalped in the ambush still holds up as one of the most a beautifully filmed pieces of dramatic heroism to appear in ANY movie.

@Ericthecameraman Год назад
Really is such a well crafted film. That scene in particular is yet another example of how the filmmakers really make you care and to buy into the drama of the moment. Cora is filmed close up with wide lenses, and in real time with traditional 24fps used, so we’re with her in the moment, Hawkeye is far away, filmed with longer glass, and in slow motion, it all just heightens the tension.

@@Ericthecameraman Thanks, that's very interesting to hear a technical breakdown of the shot, and it really makes sense! 🙂 Another subtle thing is the way that Hawkeye's run starts with quite a sweeping view from the side, capturing the drama, but then switches between a side view and a front view, making the audience very aware of the obstacles between him and Cora. I think the front view also creates additional frustrated movement (in a good way), because there is less of a sense of forward motion from that angle. (This technique appeared to great effect at the end of the movie The Graduate, when Ben is running down the road to reach the wedding, and he runs towards the camera, which creates a nightmareish image of running without moving forward. Anyway, I'm sure there is a technical term for that too. Both movies also have a great soundtrack!)

Michel Mann was always thorough about his aesthetics; for example his Miami Vice series became iconic in the way it visually defined not just Florida but a particular 80's style altogether. It's impressive that he could also apply that talent to depict a historic epic set mostly in the wilderness. This movie is a piece of art in many ways.

Excellent insights on how the filmmakers used camera and lighting techniques to advance the exceptionally well-developed storytelling. As a historian, The Last of Mohicans movie convincingly explains how the Colonists and Brits could go from victory in the French and Indian War to fighting each other in a little over a decade. The mutual disdain of the English-speaking allies is evident. This movie is in my top five all-time favorites. Great review and thanks for sharing.

GORGEOUS film, Clint Eastwood is one of my favorite directors. Jack Green (the film’s cinematographer) did incredible work. He would sit in the interior rooms with just period accurate lighting, letting his eyes adjust, and then approached how to augment that for visibility for the camera. It shows just how authentic everything looks, how much they all paid attention to the feel of the time. Beautiful film, definitely plan on reviewing in the near future

@@Ericthecameraman Looking forward to that review. It came out when I was 17, and I saw it on the big screen. Although I also love it for every reason there is, I was blown away by the cinematography (that movie was when I learned what cinematography was). It was the first time I thought about the "craft" of a movie.

I randomly found your channel...im an artist/illustrator potentially interested in storyboarding, this kind of info is very helpful to me. :) I love last of the mohicans.---okay side note/edit- I think from a storytelling perspective, I would have loved to see some building up of the love interest of Alice munro and Uncas...like it could have been very short dialogue or something that built the connection...I remember being very moved by her gesture at the end...but then watching it a second time, I thought, 'but..why?" I just felt that there could have been a little more there to pack a punch at the end.

Hey Kat, glad you found my channel! I read early drafts of the script that actually included more between them. I think their intent was to keep Alice/Uncas more centered around young impulsive attractions and let the main romance story be between Hawkeye and Cora-just my impression from reading through that draft, glad you like the video!

@@Ericthecameraman That's really neat you got to read the early script- thank you for that insight! I know it was an adaptation from a novel, so who knows what may have gotten lost in translation...thanks again!
